Rape compensation not welcome?
New Delhi:  In a bid to show its solidarity for rape victims, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati sent state Director General of Police to meet a victim in Meerut, and pay her a compensation of Rs 25,000‪ at a ceremony before the media.

The same exercise was repeated in Mathura and Noida.

‪‪"I have given them a cheque of Rs. 25,000‪," said Vikram Singh, Director General Of Police, Uttar Pradesh.

Coming after BSP's election debacle, it seemed to be Mayawati's gesture to placate the Dalit vote bank. Except, State Congress Chief Rita Bahuguna was quick to jump in - comments for which she has been sent to jail for 14 days‪.

In all this political brick-batting little thought has been given to the real victims who have overnight become the latest pawns on the chess board of politics. They feel the media circus compromised their identity and made them vulnerable.

‪‪"We want justice. We do not want this kind of money," said the victim's father-in-law.

"It's ridiculous the manner in which the plight of the rape victims has been trivialized," put forth Aparna Bhatt, Senior Supreme Court lawyer.
