Honorary Graduates 2001

Mrs Marjorie Scardino, Chief Executive of Person plc, and the only woman to head a FTSE 100 company, received a Doctorate of Letters in the Faculty of Economics and Social Studies in recognition of her contribution to the field of educational access and distance learning, and for her distinguished business career.

Dr Raymond Oliver, Senior Research Fellow, ICI, and a graduate of Heriot-Watt, was awarded a Doctorate of Engineering in recognition of his distinguished industrial career.

 

Sir Steven Redgrave CBE, five times Olympic gold medal winner for rowing, was awarded a Doctorate of the University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to rowing, of his immense courage in overcoming serious illnesses to achieve unprecedented Olympic glory and of his work for charities.

Lord David Puttnam of Queensgate, film producer, was awarded a Doctorate of Literature in recognition of his distinguished career in the film industry.

Sir Jonathon Porritt, Environmentalist and Director of Forum for the Future, was awarded a Doctorate of Science in recognition of his outstanding achievement in the championing of environmental causes and sustainable development.

Dr George E Watkins, Chief Executive Officer of Conoco UK, was awarded a Doctorate of Engineering in recognition of his distinguished career in the oil industry and his promotion of academic-led research and development.

The Hon Lord Johnston, Senator of the College of Justice and member of the Heriot-Watt University Court, was awarded a Doctorate of the University in recognition of his distinction in the law of Scotland and his contribution to the governance of Heriot-Watt University.

Dr Robert W Gore was awarded a Doctorate of Engineering in recognition of his outstanding innovative contributions to textile technology.

Dr Sydney Ross was awarded a Doctorate of Science in recognition of his outstanding role in developing the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation.

Sir Donald Mackay, economic consultant and former professor of economics at Heriot-Watt University, received a Doctorate of Literature in recognition of his distinguished career in business, academia and public service.

Tan Sri Dato Sanusi, Executive Director of the Open University of Malaysia, was awarded a Doctorate of the University in recognition of his distinguished contribution to industry and education.
