Abi Morgan

Playwright and Screenwriter

Born in Cardiff to an actress and a theatre director, Abi Morgan originally had plans to become an actress herself, but while reading Drama and Literature at the University of Exeter she made the decision to pursue a career in writing. Nominated for an Olivier Award for Most Promising Playwright in 2001, Morgan has gone on to write for television and film as well as the stage. She has written material for actors and actresses including Helena Bonham Carter, Eddie Redmayne and Meryl Streep. Her work on The Iron Lady earned her a BAFTA nomination for Best Original Screenplay whilst Shame, co-written with Steve McQueen, earned her another BAFTA nod for Outstanding British Film. In 2015 Morgan wrote the screenplays for Suffragette, starring Carey Mulligan, and for BBC drama series River.
