2 Firefighters Shot, Critically Injured, in Temple Hills, Fire Officials Say

Two firefighters were shot Friday night in Maryland while responding to a medical call and are in critical condition, fire officials said.

The shooter is in custody and is cooperating with police, Prince George's Police Chief Henry Stawinski said at a news conference Friday night.

The injured firefighters have not been identified, though officials said one is with an engine unit and another is with a medic unit.

The incident began at about 7:30 p.m., when firefighters and police received a 911 call from a "concerned individual" who was worried about the resident of a home in the 5000 block of Sharon Road in Temple Hills in Prince George's County, Stawinski said.

The firefighters tried to communicate with the resident, but there was no response. As they tried to go into the house to help the resident, the resident fired "a number of rounds" that hit the two firefighters and the concerned person who called 911, Stawinski said.

One firefighter in "extremely critical condition" was flown to Southern Maryland Hospital Center and another with serious injuries was flown to Shock Trauma University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

The third person shot was also taken to the hospital. That person is not seriously injured, Stawinski said.

Sharon Road is currently closed from Old Branch Avenue to Dalton Street due to the shooting investigation, police said.
