Special Emphasis Programs

The people of the National Security Agency are our greatest resource.

The social fabric of this agency is the key to our success, and the strength of any social network rests on understanding and valuing each member. We are committed to providing opportunities that expand our awareness of the people of NSA and that celebrate who we are. We achieve this in part through our Special Emphasis programs.

The term Special Emphasis comes via federal regulations that mandate programs to promote equal employment opportunity. In accordance with these regulations, the National Security Agency manages the following Employee Resource Grougs (ERGs):

  • African American
  • American Indian/Alaska Native
  • American Veteran
  • Asian American/Pacific Islander
  • Hispanic/Latino
  • Islamic Cultural
  • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Allies
  • People with Disabilities
  • Women

Examples of recent presentations we have sponsored are:

  • "Can We Talk: Gay and Straight Issues in the Workplace"
  • "Practicing Inclusive Leadership for First Line and Mid-level Managers"
  • "A Holocaust Memorial Observance - Surviving the Tyranny"
  • "Examination of the U.S. Hispanic Population Growth and its Impact on Federal Hiring"
  • "Potential Leaders are Diamonds in the Rough"
  • "From the Ways of the Past - the Shadow Wolves"
  • "It's not the Disability, It's the Ability"

These programs consist of training events, speakers, demonstrations, displays, panel discussions, and more.

Our population is much more diverse than these few programs might indicate, and so we have also honored great Americans, remembered significant events of the past, and explored different facets of what it means to be a member of the NSA family. New subjects arise every day, including differences in religion or spirituality, sexual orientation, and generation, giving us many different perspectives from which to understand ourselves. We use diversity to protect the safety of our nation.
