BNA This user has access to the British Newspaper Archive through The Wikipedia Library

Account Coordinator: TLSuda will be approving accounts and collecting email addresses.

The British Newspaper Archive (BNA) is a newspaper database gathered from the British Library's holdings of newspapers (for more information on what gets digitized see the discussion of the partnership). This database includes the newspapers listed at the "Available Newspapers" subpage and these resources are particularly suited for 18th, 19th and early 20th century British and Global news events and people content: their current collection includes mostly regional papers and very few titles go beyond the 1950s, many stopping in the early twentieth century. The initial pilot generously offered offered 100 accounts distributed in July 2014 and was expanded to 200 accounts in October 2014. All accounts will be issued for a full year.

Requirements[edit]

  • You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia or on your home wiki linked from your application; (see Special:Preferences)
  • You have an account that is a minimum of 6 months old
  • You have a minimum of 500 edits to the encyclopedia
  • You are active in content generation, research, and/or verification work

If you don't quite meet the experience requirements but think you would still be a strong candidate for access, feel free to apply and you may be considered.

Expectations[edit]

Approved editors may

  • Search, view, retrieve, and display portions of restricted content
  • Electronically save portions of restricted content
  • Print out single copies of portions of restricted content
  • Comply with any terms and conditions which appear on the particular pages of the BNA website they are accessing

Approved editors will not

  • Share their account logins or passwords with others
  • Mass scrape or mass download BNA content
  • Systematically make printed or electronic copies of multiple extracts of restricted content available for any purpose
  • Datamine metadata without permission, in order, for instance, to use metadata for auto-created stub articles
  • Use the access provided through the Pilot for any commercial purpose

Private and confidential information

  • You will need to have a confirmed email address to participate. You understand and agree that your name and email address may be shared with representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia Library, and British Newspaper Archive. Further participation[edit]

Here are a few ways you could help The Wikipedia Library effectively leverage this partnership:

  • Add "{{Wikipedia:BNA/Userbox}} to your user boxes, or "{{Wikipedia:BNA/Topicon}} to your topicons, if you have access to this database. This helps us share our project with other experienced users.
  • If you discover something valuable or of public interest, the British Newspaper Archive is interested in having guest bloggers on their blog (see http://blog.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/). Guest blogging has many benefits: it gives the opportunity for both The Wikipedia Library and BNA to profile our partnership, it gives the guest bloggers a new platform to share their editing experience with others (which is good for the Wikimedia community), and BNA will change the access of the newspaper page in question to Open Access (which is good for public knowledge). To find out more, contact our volunteer coordinator.
  • Alternatively, if you keep your own blog: BNA is willing to release newspaper images for your use on your own blog (with appropriate copyright statements of course).

Completed applications[edit]

As BNA makes more accounts available we'll approve more applicants for use. Even if we have more applications than available accounts, feel free to sign up in the pending applications and waitlist section. Increased Wikipedian participation helps demonstrate interest to our partners, and helps us understand how many accounts might be of use! For an archive of applications for users who received accounts see /Approved

New applications[edit]

Please add yourself to the bottom of the list using #{{user8|USERNAME|Project=code}} (eg. {{user8|Example|Project=en}} and make sure to include an explanation of why you think you would be a good candidate for using the research and how you plan to use it.

  1. dirtyharry667 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I don't know how many edits or contributions I have, but I have been a member for many years. I have written several articles and have helped clean up several others. My primary interests have to do with corporate history and retail history. My most recent contributions were the August Wagner Breweries page and I am in the process of reworking the Gamble-Skogmo page. Having access to these data bases would be very helpful in nailing down acquisitions and mergers and their dates.dirtyharry667 (talk) 3:21, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
@Dirtyharry667: I see you've requested access to many of The Wikipedia Library's resources covering many different categories. I looked at your edit history, and from what I can see, you've done little to no work on any article related to Britain. This resource is available do find historical newspaper clippings generally from British Newspapers. How would you intend to use this resource if given access? Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 12:10, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
@Dirtyharry667: Are you still interested? Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 15:54, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
  2. LowSelfEstidle (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I enjoy researching to improve English articles of a variety of favourite topics of mine, including films, biographies, and music related articles. Having a resource such as this would be a tremendous help and would encourage me to spend more time researching and improving content to the articles I enjoy working on! Many thanks. LowSelfEstidle (talk) 17:26, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
@LowSelfEstidle: I see that you've applied for many of our wonderful resources. I just want to make sure that you have the need and use for the British Newspaper Archive. Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 15:45, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

  3. Billreid (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Have more than 6000 edits mostly in article space but these have tailed off of late due to other influences but this will change in near future. I was the main editor on the article Morayshire Railway and need to complete a few blanks and hope the papers Aberdeen Journal, Elgin Courant, Elgin Courier and Inverness Courier can supply these. I have begun researching the article Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway with a view to expanding it and I think these newspapers and maybe some others would also be beneficial. 4. Gasheadsteve (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have been an editor here for more than nine years and have made over 7,500 edits and created 191 articles in that time. I am planning using the BNA subscription to work on articles about the history and geography of the Bristol area, especially those related to the local sports teams. I'm currently working on the Bristol derby article, but at the moment I only have a single source for most of the information I'm adding and it would be useful to have some additional verification. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 11:01, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

  5. Fuhghettaboutit (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I am a regular contributor, with about 87,000 edits (including deleted). I write on a variety of subjects: I've had 10 articles, predominantly written by me, achieve good status and 3 have been promoted as featured articles – with a few in the pipeline. I often use research access to help others with their writing efforts here, as well as to check sources for verification. I also spend quite a bit of time checking claimed and suspected copyright violations, which requires access to a diversity of sources. I have actually needed access to this database a few times to verify content and had to turn to the fine folks at WP:RX for secondary access.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:35, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

  6. Joseph2302 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Been an editor for just over a year, have 32,000 edits, 2 FL, 6 DYK (+ 4/5 pending). Looking to improve history of articles relating to Sussex (where I'm from), and London (where I live), with a focus on sports. Used BNA in British Library, but I'm only in London on weekends, and I'd like access to it 24/7- articles where I've used BNA include Canford Heath, Central Recreation Ground, Hastings and County Cricket Ground, Hove. 7. Ureinwohner (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Mainly active in the German Wikipedia, admin since 2005, over 72,000 edits. Tried a one month subscription on my own to see if it's really useful beyond my literature about British footballers and I think it's an amazing addition (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) I'm usually adding small facts to the English articles (around 1,8k edits) when I'm writing them for the German project. --Ureinwohner (talk) 22:26, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

  8. Tom29739 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I would like to use the British Newspaper Archive because I would like to edit a lot of British articles and need good sources to add to the history section of those articles. I like history, and I think that having access would help me add reliable information to those articles. I contribute regularly, and I'm in good standing on Wikipedia. Thanks, Tom29739 [talk] 22:24, 12 February 2016 (UTC).

  9. MinorProphet (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Been editing for 6 years, sometimes newspapers are the only source of info on some topics; it would be very helpful to have better access in order to improve articles (mostly historical). 10. Atlantic306 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Have over 4,000 edits, I spend most of the time looking for references to try and save prodded or AFD articles, this newspaper archive would help with pre internet subjects and topics. Thanks Atlantic306 (talk) 21:34, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
