Calhoun County School Superintendent Corkin F. Cherubini, who is credited with dismantling academic tracking systems in a Georgia school system he believed was racist, has been awarded this year's Profile in Courage Award, the Kennedy family announced yesterday.
The award, established in 1989 by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, recognizes political courage. Cherubini, a Worcester native, will be honored at a May 28 ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Library in Dorchester.
Cherubini, who taught junior and senior English literature for 22 years in Calhoun County, was elected in 1992 to a four-year term as schools superintendent. Once in charge, he eliminated several of the district's practices he said were the equivalent to educational apartheid. …
