Long considered an inexpensive and boring but solidly dependable car, the Toyota Corolla is turning 50 this year.

Back when a stripped-down Dodge Dart had a 170-cubic inch motor (nearly 3,000 cubic centimeters), the first 1966 Corolla rolled off the line with a 1,100 cc pushrod engine.

You couldn't buy a Corolla in the United States for another two years, when the car cost $1,700.

Since then, the Corolla has become one of the best selling cars of all time.

Take a look in the photos above at the evolution of the Corolla.

Toyota unveiled their 50th Anniversary Special Edition Corolla at the New York International Auto Show this week. The 2017 model is still a boringly dependable car, which is the reason the Corolla sells so well — because sometimes you just need to get the job done.
