Russia closes one of two runways at Syrian airbase

22 April 2016

Deterioration of one of Humaymim Air Base's two runways may have contributed to Russia's decision to withdraw some fixed-wing aircraft from Syria and deploy additional helicopters.

Airbus Defence and Space satellite imagery shows that large 'X's - normally used to indicate closed runways - were painted at both ends of Humaymim's western runway between 29 March and 7 April.

While no evidence of runway-resurfacing preparations were visible in imagery taken on 15 April, the runway has been heavily used by fast jets and transport aircraft since Russia began preparing to launch its military intervention in Syria in September 2015.

This has included regular flights by Antonov An-124 aircraft.
