Special Projects

The USGenWeb Project was to be organized by state and county, with volunteers coordinating efforts to collect genealogy data for their selected counties or states. However, much genealogy data cannot be limited to a single county, or even a single state. So, USGenWeb started branching out and some more specialized "projects" were created to collect and disseminate data that goes beyond county and state lines.

The Projects

The USGenWeb Archives Project - The USGenWeb Digital Library (Archives) was developed to present actual transcriptions of public domain records on the Internet. This huge undertaking is the cooperative effort of volunteers who either have electronically formatted files on census records, marriage bonds, wills, and other public documents, or are willing to transcribe this information to contribute. The coordinator of The USGenWeb Project Archives is Joy Fisher.

The USGenWeb African American Griots Project - The USGenWeb African American Griots Project is dedicated to assisting all of those in pursuit of their African American ancestry by being a central depository for African American records of historical proportion. The Project is coordinated by Charee Harvey and Jerry Taylor.

The USGenWeb Genealogical Events Project - The USGenWeb Genealogical Events Project is here for the purpose of providing a place to list Genealogical Events that are taking place across the country. This site is not only dedicated to help societies/groups have a successful event but to also give the researchers knowledge of where events are taking place. The coordinator for the Events Project is Joe Markovich. Societies & groups are encouraged to have their event posted on this site so that everyone will know about it. If you know of an event taking place that isn't listed, let Joe know about it.

The USGenWeb Kidz Project - The USGenWeb Kidz Project is designed to help kids learn their way around genealogical research. If they are exploring history in school by exploring your family history, this is a great resource for them. They can post queries, to see if anyone else is researching their ancestors! They can post questions, if the answers can't find be found easily! There is even a "how to" section to help them get going! The coordinator of the USGenWeb Kidz Project is Dee Pavey

The USGenWeb Lineage Project - The USGenWeb Lineage Project is designed for the purpose of providing a place to list researchers who are looking for descendants of one particular ancestor who must have lived in the US at one time and must have been born before December 31 1850. Links will include the ancestor's name, location, and dates, an email link to the researcher, and the researcher's web page on the family, if there is one. The coordinator for the Lineage Project is Freddie Spradlin.

The USGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project - The USGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project was started to encourage people to walk cemeteries and donate copies of the surveys to The USGW Archives. Many transcriptions are already available online and more are added daily. The Project also provides links to cemetery transcriptions that are not archived in The USGenWeb Archives. These include transcriptions on County web sites and on independent web sites. The coordinator of The USGenWeb Tombstone Project is Kathi Jones-Hudson.

  • The USGW Digital Map Library - The USGenWeb digital map library is another outgrowth of The USGenWeb Archives. The United States Digital Map Library is a new project currently being developed by USGenWeb Archives. Our goal is to make available to genealogists, useful, readable, high quality maps. Here you will find both archival maps and newly made maps based on scholarly research. This project and all of its strictly volunteer staff are dedicated to free, online access for the general public. The coordinator for the USGW Digital Map Project is Adrian Williams.

  • The Pension Project - The USGenWeb Archives is embarking on the USGenWeb Archives Pension Project. This project will endeavor to provide actual transcriptions of Pension related materials for all Wars prior to 1900. Transcripts, extracts and abstracts will be accepted and files will be placed in the USGenWeb Archives directory of the State and County of principal residence of the Pensioner. The coordinator for the Pension Project is Linda Lewis.

  • Online Census Images Project under the coordination of Sherri Bradley.

  • Marriage Records Project Project Coordinator Mary Hudson and Assistant Patti Jepsen

  • Archives Newsletter
  • Obituary Project The USGenWeb Archives Obituary Project was developed in April 2000. Newspapers have given permission to archive published obituaries to help researchers. RootsWeb has provided free access to the USGenWeb Archives since 1996, and like our volunteers, is dedicated to free online genealogy. Obituary Archives Project Coordinator - Maggie Stewart.

  • Special Collections Project - As the USGenWeb Archives grew, it was apparent not all submitted data fell into the standard state/county category, but covered multiple counties or states. The USGenWeb Archives Special Collections Project was developed in January 2000 to cover this special data. Special Collections also provides an entry page to scanned out-of-print books on family studies, historical books and various journals permanently stored in the USGenWeb Archives for free access. These books will be scanned and placed online. If you are interested in volunteering to transcribe any of the books, or if you have a special collection that you would like to share with others for free access, please contact Linda Russell Lewis.
