12-Year-Old Dies After Heart Attack At Water Pump; It Was 42 Degrees

The sun was unrelenting as Yogita Desai made about 5 trips from her home in her village to the nearest water pump, 500 meters away.

The 12-year-old had been unwell for days with dysentery; but her family needed her help. On her fifth journey to the water pump, she collapsed.

Doctors who attended to her in Beed, where she lived, said she died of a heart attack and dehydration.

Beed, like the other seven districts in Marathwada, has been gutted by drought for three years in a row.

Yogita died on Sunday.

The lowest temperature recorded in Beed on Sunday was 38 degrees and the high touched 42 degrees.

“There is a severe water crisis. She had gone to fetch water, where she felt giddy and collapsed,” Ishwar Desai, Yogita’s uncle, told NDTV.

Across India, a heat wave of frightening proportions has killed over 110 people so far. 45 people have died in Odisha; another 35 in Telangana in the last three weeks.

    • Well, why every thing is always related to modi ? What happened is really sad and my condolences to the family.
But this is truly disgusting to drag Modi for everything … have u praised the good thing done by Modi and the Govt ?? have u praised the train full of water sent to the affected areas and this happened for the first time after ever after freedom … this what I call CHANGE … even if its so small … so my dear friend stop looking the world from one perspective …

      • Modi said vote for him in elections and he will fix everything.. well .. we know he is a big mouth.. India’s situation makes me angry

      • When was the train sent? after people started dying…. we have had drought like situation in Maharastra for close to two years now and the train comes only now ? We heard the water resource minister saying you can prepare for drought??? really??. What type of people have we elected?. Yes praises are required when due and brickbrats are also required when due. It is time to realize that the political class across parties are the same and we the citizens need to keep them on their toes and not fight among ourselves ( based on our political affiliation). This disaster is not doubt man made and reponsibility rest with both the the center and the state and since the central governments

    • Keith don’t bring Jesus and don’t blame Modi . Its easy to know that u want to generate hatred between Christians and Hindus

      • Its not about Modi and Modi is not God that he will solve everything (but I hope he does)
To those who say Jesus will do I say if Jesus can do so can Allah Brahma Vishu Mahavir etc.

Also crux of the matter is gender bias ! Why was a sick female child made to go to fetch water couuldnt someone else her father, brother , etc get the water … That is the real issue

        • @Indian, I agree the real issue is an unwell child was sent to fetch water. Someone older and stronger (her father) would have been a more suitable choice.

    • Dont drag Modi and in the process dont drag a God either. One is not fool to see the sarcasm in the update there by inviting bad comments of one specific religion and God. As a good citizen, its our prime duty to pray to God to come of the draught very soon and these dying people saved.

    • Yeh like Jesus Christ or Ram or Krishna or Allah or whatever saved 50,000+ farmers deaths before Modi came to power. IDIOT! Have some shame instead of being so blinded with hatred. All of yes, yes, you, me, all the people are collectively responsible for our water footprint and not discussing ISSUES.

    • I suppose God is the one who is a final authority, so why Jesus Christ??? Jesus himself helpless on the cross in his last moment on earth how can he will help us? So better correct our coordinates and do some constructive work. God will help those who puts their efforts.

      • Hallo Mr Star, Jesus is not helpless, he has all the powers, if he wants he can do anything, but that’s the point he don’t wanna to show case, there is a purpose for helpless to be reborn. Learn the basics.

  1. If you dont know, in laast 10 years 70000 crore were released for irrigation project and from that not even 1% was completed. No wonder when congress/ncp was ruling even modi was behind such disaster.
The current government is doing everything possible to finish irrigation projects, but its not modis fault that even aftet 60 years farmers have to rely in rain…
    Blind spot…

  2. Is this a curse from God or man’s self-inflicted situation. what is our government doing about the water crises?
What are the so-called great people like Ravi Shankar, Baba Ramdev, and many others doing? I don’t blame the government but the people who elected them with a hand full of wishes. We need water, food and electricity to live. Provide them first and then talk about bullet train crap.

    • modi is not rain god .. it is the result of the past governments which didnt finish the irrigation projects. in the same sense as you are question the above persons also question the ncp/cong which ruled for 60+ yrs and what did they do to alleviate the drought situation? 70000cr irrigation projects scams. and as a result our farmers are still dependent on rain for water. pathetic. and good that you are expecting some thing from this govt. atleast you have a hope the previous govt were pathetic..then according to you.

    • girls are usually made to do these sorts of jobs in india. they are considered less in comparison to boys…as facts show time and time again.

  3. absolute shame for all indians. in so many years since independence the govt has not been able to provide even minimal subsistence water to the people of the country? if people responsible for development of Beed area in the last many years have any conscience (which i doubt) they should kill themselves – the entire corrupt pathetic lot of them.

  4. “12-Year-Old Dies After Heart Attack At Water Pump; It Was 42 Degrees” was it 12 year old or his mother who died of heart attack…

  5. Hey intelligent Idoits First of all BJP ruling just for last 1 Year. Idiots don’t you remember Water scam of 70,000 Cr.,the Ex deputy minister elected once said if there is no water should Urinate in dried Dams ,this will show the height of mature Politics & shame on those leaders who ruled for last 10 years just to increase the budget of Building dams, now no one is giving shit of it.Idiots pull out that leader who set Mumbai Mantralaya on fire , demolishing all files & Very Very Confidential Documents related to all the Scams.
Modi is paying fruits of these idiots.Modi is God bow before him, let not blame him for anything happens to you, tomorrow if you infected with dysentery Modi will not be responsible that ,it is your rotten mentality to eat few pieces of rotten bread thrown at you by these Two most Scamming parties & make you bark at Modiji.
Do not insult Nationally Elected Prime Minister of India or call him using singular noun.

  6. Heartbreaking to see how kids are working in such heat. If there’s a will there’s a way. People living in deserts have water in developed countries. Arizona in the US has had drought for decades, but there is no scarcity of water for people living there. It’s about how you utilize resources and make it available. The strain of so much population with utter disregard for environment is being felt. Do no cut down forests for development..ecological balance is very important.

  7. It is the poor, deprived or marginalised suffer most. We need unselfish, collective response to progress. Our reliance on god or hate the political party one does not support takes us no where. We are good in destroying ourselves but poor in building communal harmony for the greater good

  8. Apart from the high temperature and the drought situation in the state, isn’t it a cultural failure too? Why did the family make the girl undertake the task when she clearly had not been well for a long time?

  9. Global warming will more people in India then in any other country due to over population, deforestation, food scarcity, Filthy air,Unhygienic condition,Dengue,Malaria and many many more reason. Its time to implement 1/2 child policy by hook or crook otherwise this country people will vanish in next 50 to 60 yrs. The growth money will all be gone.Otherwise India is doomed.

  10. PM MODI, WILL YOU HEAR MANN KI BAAT OF BHARAT ???

BHARAT NEEDS NATIONAL RIVER INTER-LINKING PROJECT WITHOUT ANY DELAY.
NATIONAL RIVER INTER-LINKING PROJECT WILL ALLOW FARMERS TO GROW BEYOND LIMITS.
NATIONAL RIVER INTER-LINKING PROJECT WILL ENSURE THAT EACH BHARATIYA CITIZEN WILL GET WATER IRRESPECTIVE OF MANSOON IN THAT AREA.

Some ministers don’t want it as they know if this happens then their black money from grants towards draughts will stop. Don’t listen to these bastards. Implement project without further delay.

  11. Tragic & Sad! Once again it is proved that Girls in this country have secondary place in society or family. Though Drought is the root cause, but let’s not forget that a inhumane family can behave irresponsibly to an already ill girl, that is also minor. If drought is to be blamed, family of diseased cannot be spared as equally responsible for this death. GIRL CHILD specially in villages are still ill-treated by their own families and with such inhumane attitude, such tragedies are inevitable!!!
Govt. as always mute spectator, playing IPL-IPL despite …

  12. Everyone who opposed Land-Bill for political gains there by stalling Land acquisition for irrigation purposes are responsible for this child’s death…….

You people have murdered this poor kid.

  13. She was unwell for days and her family still want her to ferry water all day and extreme weather?
its not the Sun or heat it’s toxic combination of Indian culture, poverty and her gender (girl) killed her. So sad.

  14. I may look here a bit insensitive . A girl who has been suffering for days with dysentery was made to walk in the sun for 5 trips of a kilometer each with the weight of water is surely a health hazard. People will be dehydrated and weak when suffer with dysentery and irrespective of it the family asked her to bring water is a cruelty by family and they should be charged with a murder.

  15. my 2 cents ….

All the governments or the parties behind them have bothered is to garner votes, win elections, amass money and thats it, it seems. The poor are left to be only the vote bank.

I am pro BJP when they used to talk about the three point agenda :
    1. Uniform Civil Code (The appeasement politics have started and this is put on the back burner).
    2. Article 370 (Modi talked a lot about this in election campaign, but not heard anything on this anymore).
    3. Ram Mandir (well i was never a fan of it though and as such the matter is subjudice).

The other things I hope could have been changed was this reservation thing, but looking @ the UP elections now Modi has even claimed that it can happen only over his corpse. So again we are going back to the old antics of garnering votes rather than actually moving forward and bringing in change for the larger and longer good of the society.
Coming back to the water woes, Atal Bihari Vajpayee talked about the interlinking of rivers, could have resolved issues of drought and floods in the longer run, but neither its talked about nor thought about.

I think the government should stop worrying about the appeasement politics and focus on the cores issues of providing the citizens with the basic needs. The competition with the world to establish our country as a superpower can continue side by side.

  16. Yes Aditya, sadly, it had to be a girl. Because, girls only are made to run errands, irrespective of their physical well-being, in such places. If it were a boy, maybe he too would have met with the same fate… but girls are made to run around, especially, fetching water, cleaning utensils, mopping, cooking, etc.

  17. The whole issue of water is man-made, and time and again our Governments for years have failed the people.
Water has become very dear, and in the coming months and years many parts of the country are going to face drought.
Sadly, this problem will not be restricted only to the villages.
People from towns and cities are going to face the same situation.
What is going to happen and what are we doing to fix this?
This question should be on everybody’s mind………..

  18. We are sorry.. We are sorry for the lack of infrastructure..we are for the hardship the girls have to through..we are sorry for the poverty..we are sorry for not being able to save your life.

  19. Remember Anjali Damania and her war against N. Gadkari about his sugar factories and sugarcane crops taking extremely high proportion of irrigation water leaving very little for the farmers who were really meant to get that water?

    Whatever happened to her battles?

    • Even paddy and plaintain trees need more water. People need water to take bath. Ban all of them. Damania will guide you to enjoy with plenty of water after the majority of the people perish without food and because of bad health. There is a limit for activism. These highhanded individuals take up some useless cause and thrive on public funds while a genuine citizen works hard to earn his livelihood

  20. Remember Anjali Damania and her war against a VVIP about diversion of irrigation water and A. Goswams 9 part investigative journalism on the ex-bjp chief

  22. Another crying heart goes out to the deceased obedient sweet child of her parents, another innocent victim of certainly avoidable situations/circumstances.
The coldblooded politicians are busy in blame-games/exploiting the masses, or in taking selfies, the privileged are splashing in pools and spas, the sports icons are hard bent upon justifying their share of ruthless wastage of water and other resources, the self claimed messiahs of ‘Maratha Pride’ are busy in street bashing the helpless citizens, and the big-mouthed high-flying babas and their counterparts are too engrossed in fulfilling their whims and fancies.
We, the commoners, need to be pragmatic, and assist one another in the times of crisis, instead of expecting any kind of help from insecure, greedy and shameless creatures amongst us.

  23. Its not about Modi and Modi is not God that he will solve everything (but I hope he does)

  24. It is SAD how a 12 year old has to walk half a mile five times per day to get drinking water instead of going to school, playing with her friends and doing things normally a 12 year old should be doing. May her soul RIP

  25. i can’t hold back my tears whenever i see this innocent angel’s face. Besides all evils of the government, the most evil is the family’s decision to make a sick child walk and carry water in this wretched weather. The family must be booked for murder as a lesson for others.

    • When Surekha Pillai from Delhi read the news item of death of 11 year old Yogita Desai, she was shaken. So, our volunteer Ram Bodke from Beed visited the family and found that her parents were very poor farm-workers and one had to wait over half an hour for one bucket of water. Yogita in her second round could not withstand the heat and died. You may help her family by donating directly to her father’s account in SBI CIF No. 86524223412, S/B Account No 32673344846, A/P Sabalekhed, ASHTI TALUKA, ASHTI.
