Detroit Lions draft safety Miles Killebrew

With the 111th overall pick, the Detroit Lions select safety Miles Killebrew.

The Detroit Lions appear to have found themselves a true in-the-box safety with the selection of Miles Killebrew from Southern Utah in the fourth round (111th overall).

He’s one of the biggest hitters in this draft, and could potentially play either strong safety or linebacker at this level. He's one of those versatile defenders a creative defensive coordinator like Teryl Austin can find a few hats for.

“I tell you what, I’d much rather be the hammer than the nail,” Killebrew said in a conference call about his hitting prowess. And I love it.

“It’s football in its purest sense. Football is a collision sport and as long as I’m doing it safely and legally, I enjoy it.”

Killebrew reached the triple-digit mark in tackles each of the past two seasons (101 in 2014, 132 in 2015) and also showed an ability to handle pass coverage responsibilities with three interceptions (one returned for a touchdown in 2014) and seven pass breakups in 2015.

He also brings something to special teams, blocking two kicks last year.

Lions general manager Bob Quinn said Friday night that he wanted to build a tougher football team. Killebrew certainly fits the bill.

He’ll join Rafael Bush, Tavon Wilson, Don Carey and Isaiah Johnson in the competition for the strong safety spot opposite starting free safety Glover Quin.

Saturday was a pretty good day for Killebrew. When he got the call from the Lions, he was heading out the door to attend his college graduation with a degree in engineering.
