CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Several inmates at a prison in Chesapeake, suspected of using illegal drugs, went to the hospital over the weekend, according to Virginia Department of Corrections Director of Communications Lisa Kinney.

Kinney said it happened at the Indian Creek Correctional Center, which is about ten minutes from the North Carolina border. The facility, which houses approximately 1,000 inmates, specializes in treatment for substance abuse issues.

Seven inmates had to go to the hospital with symptoms that indicated a drug overdose on Saturday, and two inmates with similar symptoms were hospitalized on Sunday, Kinney said. Each person stayed overnight at the hospital for observation and then returned to the prison, she said.

One of the nine inmates tested positive for opioids, but that did not mean the others had used opioids, Kinney said.

The Department of Corrections said there could be changes to visitation at the facility as a result of this. Chesapeake Police and State Police said they did not respond to the incident.
