The Monster Shield Night Light: A connected night light and app for children.
About this project
The Monster Shield Night Light and companion mobile application is designed to help empower children to overcome their fears of the dark.
Parents and children use the mobile application (available on iOS and Android), on smart phone or tablet, to scan a room for monsters and other nighttime fears. Once the room is secured, the night light is then activated wirelessly to help the child feel secure throughout the night.
Both the mobile application (available on iOS and Android) and night light allow for customization. The night light has a brightness control as well as a custom color selection of over 16 million unique colors. Timers can also be set with the app to have the night light turned off after a specific time or shine through the night.
The night light comes with many useful features including a rechargeable battery with over 10 hours of battery life, a standard USB charging port, Bluetooth Low Energy wireless connectivity, LEDs with 16 million color options that are also dimmable, and manual or mobile application control.
As your child grows and becomes less dependent on the mobile app, the night light can be controlled via a simple one button interface to control the brightness and color of the light.
Through the interactive mobile application (available on iOS and Android), parents and children can control a number of features including the illumination color and brightness. A timer can also be set for only a few hours or for the duration of the night. Additionally, the timer and light can provide a visual indicator to your child for when it is okay to get out of bed and start their day.
A very large portion of children are affected by nighttime fears. One study published in the Journal of Behavior Research and Therapy found that 73% of all children between the ages of 4 and 12 have fear at night (Muris et al 2001. Behav Res Ther. 39(1):13-28.).
The Monster Shield mobile application has already been tested with numerous children and has shown great improvements in their ability to fall and stay asleep.
The night light is designed to fit any child’s room no matter their age or gender. With a sleek and modern design, Monster Shield will grow with your child over the years. The night light is also portable and does not require a nearby outlet. Simply charge the battery and go.
The Monster Shield Night Light and app have already come a long way. From idea to design and testing, numerous prototypes have been created of both the night light and mobile app.
We are currently working on finalizing our design for manufacturing as well as refining the mobile application.
The vast majority of the funds raised through this campaign will go toward getting the Monster Shield Night Light ready for mass production. Including the creation of the manufacturing tooling needed to create the Monster Shield Night Light. Additionally, funds will be used for component and material procurement, product validation testing, assembly, packaging and shipping.
The Monster Shield Night Light is on schedule to ship in time for the 2016 holiday season. The p2k labs team is currently finalizing our design for manufacturing efforts, seeking manufacturing partners, and refining the Monster Shield app.
