Health and safety in construction

When working within the construction industry, one is exposed to a great many potentially dangerous instruments and environments. It is thus of paramount importance that proper procedure is followed and maintenance of the equipment is carried out regularly. These measures fall under the blanket term of ‘Health and Safety’ within the industry.

‘Health’, in the phrase ‘Health and Safety’, refers to potential injury that can be procured due to exposure to an environment that the construction worker has not been adequately prepared for. Examples of health hazards are: asbestos, carbon monoxide and loud noises which can cause damage to the ear drums of the workers, or even inflict partial or total deafness if they are not outfitted with the correct protective outfitting.

The ‘safety’ part of the phrase refers to accidents that can occur due to improper behaviour or unsuitable equipment, be they either the wrong tools for the job or a piece of equipment that has not been kept in usable condition. Examples of safety hazards are: exposed power cables which could lead to electrocution, faulty equipment which could malfunction or perform its intended role to a substandard degree which could pose a risk to others in the long term, flammable substances being exposed in an area where they could catch fire and high-up areas where a person could fall or drop something causing injury to themselves or others.

Health hazards are those which are dangerous when people are unprepared for the already established environmental dangers in the area, whereas safety hazards are those which are dangerous due to improper usage of equipment in or around the area. Therefore health and safety checks need to be run so that the construction workers know of the inherent risks associated with the site they are working on (health) as well as continuous equipment maintenance and extensive knowledge of how to use the aforementioned equipment so as minimise the risk of accidents taking place (safety).

Employers and employees need to be aware of health and safety and take the required precautions so as to minimise these potentially fatal risks.

Accidents in construction

When working in the construction industry one is exposed to environments and equipment which if interacted with improperly could lead to serious accidents. Construction, by its very definition, must involve materials which are in a state where they are not yet ‘complete’, which often means construction workers will be handling dangerous substances which only have their hazardous element nullified once the work has been completed. As such the construction industry is one of the most potentially dangerous industries one can work in, however if proper protocol is carried out these risks can be substantially mitigated, and hopefully avoided completely.

Should protocol not be followed, employers and employees are liable to lawful harassment resulting in possible termination of employment. If however these reckless construction workers are allowed to continue working in such a dangerous way, the results could be far more tragic, inevitably resulting in easily preventable physical injuries, possible damage to constructed areas due to improper instalment, or even death which could be caused due to the improperly made construction or due to the equipment or environment where the construction was being crafted.

Due to the serious consequences that accidents can have in this industry it is vitally important to have a good understanding of health and safety procedures before any construction duties are carried out. SMSTS London
