A City and a Barangay Were Created                        [Visit Interactive Guide]

During the last quarter of 2004, a city and a barangay were created in the National Capital Region (NCR). The number of cities increased to 117 in December 2004 from 116 in September of the same year due to the conversion of the municipality of Taguig in the NCR into a highly urbanized city effective December 8, 2004 pursuant to Republic Act No. 8487 dated April 25, 1998 and COMELEC Resolution on the Election Protest Case (EPC) No. 98-102 which declares and confirms the ratification and approval of the conversion. Likewise, the number of barangays also increased to 41,975 in December 2004 from 41,974 due to the creation of a new barangay, Barangay Fortune in the NCR pursuant to Marikina City Ordinance No. 95, which was ratified in the plebiscite held on December 18, 2004.

As of December 31, 2004, the Philippines had 17 regions, 79 provinces, 117 cities, 1,500 municipalities and 41,975 barangays. During this period, Luzon remains the largest island in the country, with 8 regions, 38 provinces, 58 cities, 713 municipalities and 20,488 barangays. Visayas has 3 regions, 16 provinces, 32 cities, 376 municipalities and 11,443 barangays while Mindanao has 6 regions, 25 provinces, 27 cities, 411 municipalities and 10,044 barangays.
