Demis Hassabis

Artificial Intelligence Researcher and Founder, Deep Mind Technologies

Demis Hassabis is one of the world's leading experts on artificial intelligence and co-founder and engineering director at Deep Mind Technologies, which was acquired by Google in 2014 for a reported £400 million. Hassabis works on 'learning machines', which support human understanding of the rise of digitised information by sifting through huge amounts of data. A master standard chess prodigy aged 13, he has enjoyed success as a computer game designer, neuroscientist and world-champion gamer. After taking his A-Levels two years early, he joined game design studio Bullfrog Productions, leaving to study Computer Science at Queens’ College, Cambridge. A PhD in cognitive neuroscience preceded a research post at the Wellcome Trust and a role as visiting scientist at MIT and Harvard. DeepMind's team of 150 mathematicians and computer scientists is based in Kings Cross, and Google recently appointed an ethics committee to address concerns over the potential for misuse of AI.
