Steve McQueen, CBE

Director and Artist

Steve McQueen is one of the most influential film-makers in the world with his highly visual work tackling often controversial subjects. McQueen won the Turner Prize, the highest award given to a British visual artist, in 1999 for his short film Deadpan, and made his transition from shorts to feature length films in 2008. His three feature films to date have all received critical adulation, most notably 2013 masterpiece 12 Years a Slave. Having won three Academy Awards, amongst many others, 12 Years a Slave’s win for Best Picture made McQueen both the first black producer and the first black director to win the award. He was awarded a CBE in the 2011 New Year Honours for his services to the visual arts.
