Rights and New Business Development - RAS Journals

The department provides a number of services relating to the rights of the Oxford Journals, including:

Processing permission requests to reproduce content from the Oxford Journals
Copyright advice and information for learned society partners, authors and their institutions
Licensing translation rights for the Oxford Journals
Licensing the right to include Oxford Journals content in Third-party products and services such as aggregators, document delivery, and abstracting and indexing

PERMISSIONS

At Oxford Journals, it is a core part of our objectives to encourage the widest possible dissemination of the journal content published while at the same time ensuring that the rights, including the integrity of our authors and learned society partners research is protected. We believe that the permissions policies we have and the systems in place to facilitate them enable us to achieve this objective.

STM Permissions Guidelines & Signatories: – a key part of our efforts to minimize the administration that is often involved in permission clearances while ensuring that any re-use of limited amounts of content from our journals is fair and the original source of the material fully attributed. It should be emphasized here that these are just guidelines (for further information please click here.

To enable further clarity for the re-use of limited amounts of journal content for academic and scholarly purposes, we are also signatories to the Draft Scholarly Publisher Guidelines for Quotation and other Academic Uses of Excerpts (for further information please click here).

Requests to Reuse Figures

You are not required to obtain permission to reuse figures (including tables) for academic, educational or non-commercial research for the following material provided full acknowledgment is given to the original source including Figure Number, Title of the Article, Author, Journal Title and Volume or Issue.

Post 1998: a maximum of two figures (including tables) from a journal article or five figures per journal issue (unless a separate copyright holder is identified in such figure, in which event permission should be sought from that holder).

Pre 1998: a maximum of five figures (including tables) per journal article.

Other Permission Requests

For all other permission requests please email Journals Permissions clearly stating the material you wish to reuse and the way in which you wish to reuse it.

LICENSING AND NEW BUSINESS

TRANSLATIONS/LOCAL EDITIONS OF OXFORD JOURNALS

We license rights for local editions of the Oxford Journals to be produced in more than a dozen countries. Local editions are often translated and contain selected excerpts from the original journal in addition to any local news, views and editorials that are approved.

We would be interested in enquiries to produce local editions of any of the journals on our list. Please submit your enquiry to us here: email message or a fax.

GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

When publishing an article in Oxford Journals, for the majority of the titles on our list you are not required to assign copyright to Oxford University Press and/or the learned society concerned. In addition to this, you retain a wide range of rights concerning future re-use of the material as detailed in the Publication Rights Policies section on our Web site (see url below this section).

For the uses specified in that section, please note that there is no need for you to apply for written permission from Oxford University Press in advance. Please go ahead with the use ensuring that a full acknowledgment is made to the original source of the material including the journal name, volume, issue, page numbers, year of publication, title of article and to Oxford University Press and/or the learned society.

The only exception to this is for the re-use of material for commercial purposes, as defined in the information available via the above url. Permission for this kind of re-use is required and can be obtained by using Rightslink by completing the process described above.
