The Nine Worst Video Game Themes
Warning: these musical abominations may cause irreparable damage to your eardrums.
By: Scott Sharkey October 24, 2011
Sometimes someone gets it in their head that a videogame doesn't just need music, it needs an actual theme song. A vocal track that ostensibly captures the essence of everything that the game is about, and which may even appear as a recurring motif throughout other incidental pieces on the soundtrack. Sometimes, in the case of a game like, say, Metal Gear Solid 3, the theme works out almost flawlessly and even the outrageously goofy lines about eating tree frogs seem 100% appropriate. Then there's just about everything else. Here are a few that will drive sane men to put pencils in their ears before slamming their head in a car door.
I am the Wind - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
SotN's soundtrack is deservedly recognized as some of the best videogame music ever committed to disc, so it's kind of a slap in the face that its lone vocal track (in the US, anyway) is one of the most execrable tunes ever composed. After enjoying hours of aural excellence players were treated of a credit roll accompanied by an abuse of soprano saxophone that would make even Kenny G die of embarrassment. And that's to say nothing of the song itself. Sing it with me! "I am the wind, I am the sun, and one day we'll all be one..."
Alas, recent editions of the game omit this nightmarish gem, which, much like the game's bathroom-recorded voice acting has grown on us all a bit over the years.
Eyes On Me - Final Fantasy VIII
As the theme for two flat teenage characters and their shockingly unconvincing love story, Faye Wong's Eyes on Me is actually a perfect match. Cloying sentimentality, terrible meter, forced rhymes, and instrumentals that would embarrass Celine Dion's backup band actually all seem pretty appropriate. Especially for a scene where a sulky teenage idiot finally opens up a little to his boring would-be girlfriend, revealing that against all odds he was actually more likable as a mostly silent grump.
DK Rap - Donkey Kong 64
Verging into so-bad-its-good territory, the DK Rap reveals such a fundamental cluelessness when it comes to anything resembling actual rap or hip-hop that it very nearly makes it around to the other side of complete bullshit and ends up awesome. Really, when I think of the improvisational musical art of the the inner city underclasses the first thing that comes to mind is a tie-wearing Japanese gorilla. Yeah.

Capcom's Best and Worst
Posted: Jul 13, 2012 12:00AM PST by AlexDrey
Marvel vs Capcom 2's "Take you for a ride" should be on this list. It played through every menu, with annoying effects and an even worse vocal. The Capcom fighting games have seen alot of bad music. Which surprised me at the time since the classic Street Fighter 2 soundtrack was fabulous. Those of us who played the original SNES verison (or Arcade) will are likely to agree: when you enter Ken's stage you much rather be air-guitaring the chords in the background than tossing a sonicboom at the bleach blonde in the Gi.

Shockingly ignorant
Posted: Apr 08, 2012 12:00AM PST by retrogaminator
Lunar's Boat Song on a worst list? Wow. Even if you personally don't like the song, the absolute ignorance of the game, the song's place in it, and how well it was received by the public and the game's fans at the time is spectacularly bad journalism. I can't believe this is on 1UP.
Whatever you hoped to accomplish with this list, that entry made it a complete fail.

8 was never that good anyway
Posted: Jan 10, 2012 12:00AM PST by V4Viewtiful
terrible plot, nosensical dialogue, a limp love story, lame characters, muguffn characters and scenes and a really awkward battle system that takes either prior knowledge or research to make less tedius. But on to the music.
Eye's on me is rubbish, it's poorly translated melodramatc dribble (and I like melodrama) that isn't even used in the game to great effect. Vanilla Ice was best Seller at some point and he sucked (he's actually really good now), Transformers always makes money eventhough it's Michael Bay Splooge.
No one is wrong for liking any of these songs but good these songs aren't

Eyes on Me
Posted: Dec 20, 2011 12:00AM PST by mr_darcy
In my opinion, Eyes on Me is a perfectly decent song. The only trouble with it is that it's not for everybody. It's girly and sweet, not something that most boys would mat to listen to. But seriously, it shouldn't be on this list. There are video game themes out there that are worse.
-
Yep
Posted: Nov 29, 2011 12:00AM PST by dwrayswez
Worst songs I ever heard in a video game and It's amazing that most of these are a couple generations ago. BTW.. The DK64 rap is bad... really bad... and it's 3 min. long... I listend to half of it and realized that it was only half way through at the time I thought I listend to the whole three minutes but no.... bad.. I'm not into cheesy acting but the Night Trap game is something I want to check out... just because I have never played a game that looked so generic.

Why is "Eyes on Me" on this list?
Posted: Nov 26, 2011 12:00AM PST by evildog13
"Eyes on me" has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. It just has a kind of charm to it. The Donkey Kong rap is just funny. The only song that really does belong on this list is the Castlvania track. It was soooo Kenny G. I have to agree with some of the other people on here that who ever wrote this article obviously hates FF8 and didn't really pay much attention when they played it.

Why All the "I Wanna Take :You For Ride" Hate?
Posted: Nov 23, 2011 12:00AM PST by UnicornWhisprer
Not only does each line in the song rhyme, but it very meticulously follows the AAAAAAAA..etc. rhyme scheme that is found in all great song writining and poetry, but it is one of the few songs I know all the words to, along with "Around the World" by Daft Punk and "Tequila" by The Champs.

Fine with me

Gotta give 1UP props for putting Eyes on Me on this list! Definatly deserved too. Rabid fanboys will never agree though (ofc)!
Eventhough I actually like the DK Rap, it really is really bad... I guess nostalgia wins^^
Oh damn cruisin USA xD holy... that "song" SUCKS... but really it's just extremly manly! yeeeeeaaaaah

I look at the article and...

...I saw Eyes on Me listed and stopped reading. Clearly the writer of this article doesn't know what music is. I can accept that the writer may not like the game, or may not like the song, but it is FAR from being bad enough to reach any worst list.

lol and offended much?

i love the DK rap but i would have to agree with the so bad its awesome lol also why you gets getting offendend about the Final Fantasy one being there never played it myself so not pretending i know anything but holy crap you guys take it personally (though i would agree some bashing by the writer was not necesary)

Oops, I took something seriously.
Posted: Nov 13, 2011 12:00AM PST by M12i
Video game themes suffer from the same problems as movie themes, and are just as hit or miss. The convenient part is that you don't usually need to listen to any given themes very often, typically with beginning or ending credits and possibly during one or two scenes in a work. There might be ones that are more irritating than others, but given how far back they had to dig to come up with this list of 9, I'd say we're getting better at making themes either less irritating or less pervasive.
Also, given that at least half of the list is composed of arcade games or games so terrible that they are only featured in conversations revolving around awful games, there's some degree of bias here. Arcade games have loud, easily recognizable themes - Crazy Taxi was never really intended to be a game that people sit down and play for hours on end. 3 RPG themes are on here, and pretty much all JRPGs have themes like these - anybody remember Persona? Wild ARMs? Suikoden? Final Fantasy IX/X/XII/XIII? There's a pop song targeted at anime fans behind a lot of games from Japan.
So what's left? The DK Rap. DK64 is not a particularly good game, it was representative of what 3D-Platforming was like during that era (Banjo-Kazooie, Mario 64, Gex, Blasto, Spyro, etc...). There's better games certainly, but I wouldn't say that it's the worst offendor. The song itself is pretty representative of 90's rap made for a specific license or a variety of "lite" rap (children's/teens/targeted audience).
At the end of the day we listen to what we like, and don't listen to what we don't like. It's just music either way, and at least you're not in danger of running into these songs on the radio - unlike whatever pop/rock/metal/country/electronic/dubstep/rap/etc.... is currently in vogue.

Eyes on Me? WTF?
Posted: Nov 08, 2011 12:00AM PST by dunadan72
This was a great song for the game, and probably the only game theme song I can remember that actually hit some sort of mainstream music chart.
At least these games did not conform to the EA-style of music...which is "Let's just pay royalties on existing songs instead of creating something original."
BTW, as many here probably already know, you can also find (and sing) "Eyes on Me" at most popular karaoke lounges.

Eyes On Me
Posted: Nov 02, 2011 12:00AM PST by Youkou_Kochou
Eyes On Me was a beautiful song. And it was more about Laguna and Julia's romance than Squall and Rinoa's. I also disagree on calling Squall and Rinoa "flat" characters, because that's completely inaccurate. Just because you (obviously) don't like them, doesn't mean they didn't develop. Squall was a complete introvert and dutiful follower in the beginning of the game, but became more open and a strong and capable leader as the game progressed. Maybe not quite as dynamic, but Rinoa shifted from the carefree good-doer to the (almost) tragic heroine.
Nobody's saying you have to like the game, but at least be fair about what you say. =\
-
I agree
Posted: Nov 02, 2011 12:00AM PST by vampiregoddess
Eyes on Me is a beautiful song about Laguna and Julia. Did the person writing this piece just not get that? Did they even finish the game?
I personally loved the fact that squall very rarely talked. Reminded me of Cloud and at the time all these games with talking main characters were coming out...it was nice not to have that in this.
Eight will always be my favorite...well all of it except the damn space stuff. That was too weird for me.
-
Actually...
Posted: Nov 07, 2011 12:00AM PST by TheShaper
Scanning through older features, when I saw Squall face in a "worst videogame themes" features, I came enraged to defend Liberi Fatali, but upon seeing they were talking about Eyes on me, I was surprisingly relieved. Yet I hate this tendecy people have to diss FFVIII, it was a fantastic game, in fact, back in the day, I liked it even better than FFVII (things changed as the years passed by but I was absolutely blown away by FFVIII back when I was 15 in a way FFVII didn't have the power to do).
Nevertheless, I sorta like Eyes on me, it still sends a chill through my spine when I think about it.

I love Eyes on Me
Posted: Nov 26, 2011 12:00AM PST by prince_david
Unbelieveable. Eyes on Me was one of my favorite songs from any game ever. I have goosebumps just thinking of it.
-
I got to say...
Posted: Oct 31, 2011 12:00AM PST by SacrificAbominat
That I actually liked eyes on me. It wasn't the best song in the game, that goes to Liberi Fatali or one of the songs that plays during the final boss, but it was quite emotional and in my opinion well sung. One song that is probably the worst song in the game is the f**k up tune that you can select when they group plays in a band on the satilite dish, Irish music anyone.
-
I'm telling you...
Posted: Nov 01, 2011 12:00AM PST by isthatabear
I didn't like Eyes on Me one bit in the beginning, especially when they were promoting it before the game came out. But it hit me hard during the emotional ending where Laguna visits his wife's grave and remenices about proposing to her just as the song hits its stride. I had tears in my eyes, and forever remember this song in a good light

"Worst".......really?
Posted: Oct 31, 2011 12:00AM PST by Shonuff27
Im sorry but I just don't agree with this list. First off it's way too subjective. A good example is the Lunar and FFXIII songs, they might not be popular for the macho type but they are far from most worst.I think I only agree with like 2. And 3rd Strike "Lets get it on" over "Take you for a Ride?" It's like this guy just searched youtube and randomly picked a bunch of songs he so happens to hate. Lame.
This list should be most annoying or awkward, i'd be happy to agree, but worst? This guy just put the "worst" in so it would generate alot of angry people, apparently it worked. Dirty pool 1up. Dirty pool.

DK Rap

Perspective people...please
Posted: Oct 29, 2011 12:00AM PST by Danger2bme
The visceral response this article is getting is both mind boggling and somewhat sad. To start, who cares if the writer of this article hated these songs? That's not a dig against Sharkey or the songs for that matter. The point is it's just his opinion. I could understand the vitriol a little if one of you were actually the composers of these songs. I'm going out on a limb here and assuming no one who has posted on this board is actually one of the individuals who wrote the song. Therefore...why do you care THIS much? You can disagree with it of course but some of the mud slinging and anger? really? We have people marching in front of wall street talking about societal issues whose behavior seems tame in comparison to some of these emotionally charged responses regarding video game music.
Gamers get so upset when they feel society looks down on them or doesn't give their hobby the credit it deserves. Having some of the responses I have read out here doesn't exactly help us in that department, now does it?
What's funny about this is if Scott would have chosen a song from "That's so Raven" for GBA in lieu of FFVIII or Lunar I assure you there would be not one of you posting the same emotionally charged rant. If anything, people would join in and laugh about it. We talk about embracing individuality yet stone it when one's opinion is dramatically different from the norm.
-
How's this for perspective?
Posted: Oct 29, 2011 12:00AM PST by Cyberxion!0!
People feel as if their opinions are being invalidated when confronted by an opinion that differs from their own. They want to be able to walk away from that feeling safe that their perception hasn't been challenged, and so they'll do anything and everything in their power to undermine the credibility of the person with that differing opinion, and thus the opinion itself.
Also, as it pertains to our interests in particular, the things we like are so ingrained into our being that they come to represent us in a very real way. So when someone portrays something that we like in an unfavorable light, it can feel as if we're being judged as well. I'm sure you can see how that might play out.
I can assure you that if it appears that someone has an open mind about something, nine times out of ten it's largely the result of how little of an actual investment in that thing that person has. You hit upon that at the end when you suggested that a song from "That's so Raven" for the GBA might not lead to the same sort of response had it made the list, and you were absolutely correct.
-
@Cyberxion!0!
Posted: Oct 29, 2011 12:00AM PST by Weelz_79
Bunk, sir. Opinions do not define nor make who we are. There is no one on this message board worthy of taking offense to this editorial as none are the original artists of the said works. Furthermore, your argument that keeping an open mind instigates ignorance is simply ludicrous.

On Eyes on Me...
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by MisterFrodo17
I get the criticism of the vocal version (especially with those lyrics, which if I'm right were the same in both the English and Japanese versions of the game), but personally I think the melody's pretty darn good. I'm someone who loves Suteki da Ne and Snake Eater, though, so my musical opinion may be invalid here.

Thoughts
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by BrokenH
I dunno Scott. Call it "dumb ass nostalgia goggles" if you must but I thought the sound tracks to FF8 and Lunar were fabulous! (Every last song) I Am The Wind from SOTN isn't too horrible either. Maybe I'm just saying that because it reminds me of Whitney Huston. That lady can sing!
Regardless, no hard feelings champ. lol. We can agree to disagree!
-
As I'm sure you know...
Posted: Oct 29, 2011 12:00AM PST by Fyrebrand
Sharkey's just poking fun at the individual songs mentioned, not the entire soundtrack of each game. I wonder how this article would have gone, though, if he set out to write "Worst Video Game Soundtracks"... That would be interesting.

TyrantSyn: Well sotn is about "gothic horror" so making you feel as if your console is possessed is a merit!
Fyrebrand: I'm aware. Bad wording on my end when talking about Lunar. Though I did only speak of "I am the wind" for the sotn part of my reply.
Either way I'm not "offended". I just feel differently about the subject matter. Scott is actually one of my favorite writers on 1up!

I appreciate the crazy taxi offspring song being on this list. I consider that bad to be the worst musical abomination in history and it's entirely because of crazy taxi. ... I was with you 1up. A couple of the songs I threw into question, but I can see what you were saying.
Now, I'm not sure why Offspring, even with your disclaimer on there is still on there in the first place, as I don't share your relation to the song with driving to KFC in any way. But I'll take that as a personal preferance.
But Lunar?
The song in that game may not be the best, but the game itself is BASED around music, and singing, and Lunar herself being known for her singing ect. The song also has a direct correlation to the game and Lunar's essence in the Game's lore.
So, I suppose if we were to follow your logic in this article, all Disney songs are crap? That's what this song reminds me of.
Maybe I'm alone in that.
-
Add one
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by BrokenH
You're not alone. I loved Lunar's soundtrack. It reflected friendship, true love, self discovery, and optimism and those are the exact same themes of the whole game. Sure, it's like a Disney musical sometimes but I think Lunar was shooting for that.

Unhealthy Brotherly Bonding

I'll admit to liking the DK Rap; I know it by rote. Back then, whenever I fired up the N64, my little brother would always drop whatever he was doing and we'd pantomime a couple of the routines; I did Donkey's and he did Diddy's ...
Of course, he had an excuse: he was 6. I was 18.

Its funny
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by wiseman4380
Any time FF8 is brought up, theres hundreds of comments on the article. Half are fans rabidly defending it, the other half calling them "butthurt fanbois" (seriously, whats with this "butthurt" trend? We really need to put this term to rest).
I really like FF8. Its one of my favorites, in fact. Does it bother me that other people dont? No. Why? Because i like it and thats all that matters. If you like something because it means something to you, nobody can ever take that away. Just because somebody attacks it and calls it inferior doesnt mean its true, and it doesnt make it any less special. We all experience things differently.
Theres alot of corny/awful music out there i happen to like. When people make fun of it, i laugh and agree, and say "i like it anyway". Something doesnt have to be widely accepted as "good" for you to enjoy it, and you dont have to defend your feelings for it. I think people too often defend something they like because when someone calls it "stupid", they feel like that person is calling them stupid for liking it. If you keep in mind that your feelings for the item and the item itself are two seperate entities, it becomes much easier to just laugh it off.
-
concur!
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by rytekprophecy
I like how you think. Unfortunately the internet is a reflection of humanity given anonymous publishing rights so expect the "butthurt" line for a few more years (then expect something worse)! I, too, enjoyed FF8 and as you say, nobody can take that away from me!
-
I always seem to concur with you wiseman lol
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by kingsharkboi
yes ff8 is one of my favorites and in fact the whole soundtrack is probably one of the best parts of that game. In fact in my long history of playing games and especially RPGs (yes, all the classics...except i haven't played earthbound yet -__-) I'd probably put FF8 at the top! I got something out of that game that a lot of people didn't seem to "get". It was new and refreshing yet still high quality, surprisingly structured differently after the mega-hit that was FF7 could've just been cloned again (credits to Majora's Mask for not being a clone of Ocarina as well). I know it was one of the most controversial FF games, but the fact that there are so many others who loved the game shows that Square did something right at least for some people. Even Verdegrand from youtube, is a fan haha
I like Eyes on Me for what it stands for in the story (Julia's piece written for Laguna), I like the DK Rap because it's so bad it's good, and I genuinely enjoy the theme for Street Fighter 3 because the full song is way more than just the snippet shown in the brief intro video. I'm not going to defend myself to death with these opinions, but I'm happy to find enjoyment in more things than a lot of negative nancies do so I guess that's good for me :P
-
It is unfortunate
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by wiseman4380
that it seems to be a thing of the past when a successful game meant the company would take risks on their next entry. These days, it seems a successful game means they're just going to crank out a virtually identical sequel with just enough upgrades to qualify it as a true sequel rather than an expansion.
While this isnt always bad (Fallout New Vegas was awesome), imagine the possibilities if Obsidian was allowed complete freedom instead of "Fallout 3 in Vegas". I dont know the story behind this game's development, so this may be a poor example, but it was the most recent "more of the same" that came to mind

I don't think "All I Want" from the game Crazy Taxi deserves to make the list of Worst Video Games for 2 reasons: (1) The author dislikes it due to its ridiculous repitition throughtout the game. That's not the fault of Offspring, it's the fault of the designers & programmers for not incorporating enough soundtracks into the game in order to lower repitions, (2) When listening to "All I Want" once in a blue moon, it is actually a good song, and listening to ANY good song over and over is annoying. Perfect example: "Burnout Paradise" plays the same "Paradise City" song over and over. Even though this is a good song, its repitition made this Burnout game feel less fun...

I'm Offended. Truly.

yes, call me a fanboy I don't care. The fact of the matter is this; Music is entirely subjective. That being said, how can an article as ill-inspired as this headline the front page of such a largely read publication like this. This is the kind of garbage that made me leave Kotaku, and now I'm thinking of doing the same with 1up. not that anyone with authority in the 1up office would care about me, just being one person and all. they probably get a rise out of it for getting more hits.. what a shame.
The amount of musical snobbishness it takes to declare these personal opinions as fact, and then present it in such a bold way is beyond my understanding.
I happen to love "eyes on me" from ff8, as well as the game itself, which you belittled with your snarky "two flat teenagers in an unconvincing love story" comment... in fact, the whole paragraph is more-so committed to insulting the game and characters itself, which also greatly offends me, being one of my very favorite games of all time...this is just not proper journalism, at all.
leaving the game aside, which you clearly are trying to force an opinion about as well...
Eyes on Me is one of my favorite love songs. the fact that is may have slight translation issues does not defer or detract from the passion and tone of the piece, which ultimately conveys the message in music to me. I find the melodies hauntingly beautiful, and i also happen to think faye's voice is beautiful and tender The song makes perfect sense to me, and I am able to derive my own memories and feelings when I listen to it, which is ultimately the mark of any good music. It is a very personal song to me, and to hear and see this on the front page is just sad. :/
There are other tracks on here that are also not that bad, certainly not worthy of trashing like this.
I don't want to start getting so into this that I cause an all-out war so I'm trying my very best to remain civil, but I really think if 1up values their integrity they would remove an article like this from their headlines. I don't care if you personally don't agree with me, that's fine. but I don't appreciate you flaunting your opinion, which offends me personally and emotionally, on the front page feed of a site I come to to relax and read up on new stuff.
If I wanted to hear about how everyone has the correct and best opinion about music, I'd hang out on youtube and troll the comments. I don't want this kind of crap ruining my day on a site like this. Just seems like poor form from a journalism point of view. I'd actually like an apology.

"music is subjective"
...so how dare somebody hate on songs that I like! The internet should only have articles that state things that I agree with. I HATE YOU WEBSITES WITH OPINIONS THAT ARE DIFFERENT THAN MINE!
(p.s. that was all sarcasm, by the way. It should be blatantly obvious, but then again, judging by the comments for this article, some people here obviously don't have a sense of humor/basic rationality.)
-
you're not very intelligent are you?
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by chibi_dan
you're missing the point. It's not that I have a problem with his differing opinion. It's that I don't appreciate it being shoved in my face like this. It is poor journalism. This is the point I'm making.
Nice try though... think before you speak.
edit: sarcasm reads poorly over the internet...
-
lol u not mad, just stupid
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by ecchisquirrel
You don't appreciate it "being shoved in your face?" So they shouldn't post new articles on their website on, y'know, the front of their website?
So, people are allowed to post their opinions on the internet as long as its in a place where you won't see it? So should they design their website so that any stories that might possibly offend any overly sensitive, insecure fanboys are tucked away neatly where nobody will ever read it? Perhaps add a filter that edits out anything from the front page that dumbasses might disagree with?
-
your title headers tell me plenty about you.
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by chibi_dan
you're clearly an insecure troll with nothing better to do. You still do not see the point. When I wrote an article, it wasn't featured on the main page. The point is that not only is this particular article subjective, overly opinionated, poorly written, ill-inspired, offensive, and ultimately just plain awful in nearly every regard, but it is a featured article which shows up on the main page feed. hence my frustration with it.
as for your insults, I'll let them slide since I'm a bigger person than you.
-
your hopelessly inane comments tell me plenty about you.
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by ecchisquirrel
Thank you again for demonstrating your complete and utter lack of a sense of humor. Or basic reading comprehension.
What did you expect when you saw the title for this article? A collection of charts and graphs that scientifically and objectively figure out what the worse video game themes are? Features like this, as with any "Best of" or "Worst of" lists, like reviews, are obviously the writer's opinion. They're supposed to be opinionated. They're supposed to be subjective. That's the point. What do you want next? Should sites not give games bad reviews because it might piss off fans of those games? Should they not report news that'll make a game or a company look bad? Should they check with you first before they state any of their opinions in a piece that is obviously supposed to simply be a collection of *their* opinions? Do you want the editors of this site to tuck you in at night, tell you you're always right, and that there's nothing wrong with any videogame ever?
-
"hopelessly inane" huh?
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by chibi_dan
I think I'm a pretty well spoken and concise individual. thank you. Your comments have been nothing but smug and antagonistic, I think you need to re-check your own sense of humor. You've just been rude to me the whole time. My reading comprehension is stellar, thanks.
I expected a bad article, and that's what I found. An article that does away with integrity for the sake of starting fights, like the one you seem to enjoy dragging out here with me.
Journalism should never be like this. There are plenty of countless thousands of "opinion piece" articles written by everyday commenters that don't make the front page feed. The reason this one did is the exact reason you and I are having this conversation at the moment, and i find it to be in very poor taste on the part of 1up.
Reviews are different and are expected to be explained using great detail and drawing on facts from having played the game. Apples and Oranges here, my friend.
I would like for the editors of this site to have some integrity. I'll say it again. And I'd also appreciate if you were to stop personally attacking me, as I've done absolutely nothing to provoke you, and you've been awful to me from your very first comment.
Why is it that my opinion doesnt matter here, but yours is the only one that does? very hipocritical.
At any rate, this is the sort of thing that ruins sites like this, and will very possibly be my reason for deleting my 1up account. This article is clearly geared towards negativity, and that's exactly what it's produced here. I rest my case. Shame on you, 1up.
-
not to drag this hilarity on any further, but...
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by ecchisquirrel
I apologize if my tone was antagonistic. It's just I have very little patience for people who, despite my best efforts, continue to post completely insipid, logicly inept comments. It's like talking to wall. A wall made of Down Syndrome.
Oh, oops, there I go again. Sorry!
Also, you say that this article shouldn't be featured because it's just an opinion piece, just like thousands of others made by commenters like you or I. Except this opinion piece is written by Scott Sharkey, a professional writer for this website, and frequent guest on this site's podcasts, who's specific job requires him to give his opinion.
And just as a reviewer plays through a game before always making a completely opinionated and subjective review about it, it's clear that Mr. Sharkey listened to the songs he talks about in this article, didn't like them, and then wrote an article about it. Because that's what his job is, and that's why this is a featured article on the front page. Moreover, it's not a problem if you like these songs. That's fine if you do. The problem with your comments is you didn't just state your opinion, but you also used your opinion as a basis to call into question the integrity of 1-Up, and the integrity of the writer for stating their opinions, as well as accussing them of bad journalism. If you're allowed to do that, then by the same logic, I should be allowed to question your intelligence and your integrity for basically doing the same in these comments as the writer did in the original article (which, again, is to state an opinion.)
If you find that negativitey to be such a turn off, then perhaps yes, this site (or any site dedicated to doing a critical analysis [keyword there is "critical"] of anything) probably isn't for you. Perhaps there's a site out there for you where every game is considered great, every song is a masterpiece, and everyone gets a gold star for showing up.
-
the hilarity lies in your inability
Posted: Oct 28, 2011 12:00AM PST by chibi_dan
to reason. Moreover, your inability to let me have my own opinion here. I'm not forcing you to read my posts or to care about them, but as you've proven yourself to be nothing more than a contrarian, that's the nature of most of your work around here, I'd assume. Again, you've been consistantly rude and out of place to me, and you continue to do so. It only makes you look bad, so that's your problem. you also show no respect for my personal opinion on the matter. you contradict your own argument against me having my opinion about these things, by not allowing my original comment to be just that. You incessantly rant in order to prove your way of thinking is correct.
Again, it isn't about whether or not his job might require him to write articles here or not, it is the manner in which one does so, it's subject matter, and the ultimate intent of the finished work.
In this case, I sincerely believe that this article was, from the beginning, poorly conceived, lazily researched, uninspiringly written, and ultimately, the finsished work; inspired by misplaced and highly subjective negativity. And as such, it continues to reciprocate more negativity by inspiring and instigating such conversations as this one.
I don't give a damn what Mr. Sharkeys credentials are on this site. In fact, his being an employee should make my argument all the more valid. Employees should be scrutinized and held accountable for mistakes. I'm sure hes a smart guy with much better stuff to offer than this piece. In this case, He wrote a half-assed article very likely knowing that he was going to offend people, which I believe was, in fact, the only ultimate intent this piece has to offer; and that's extremely poor journalism to me.
You're right, I am in fact using my opinion, based upon this article, which from a brief skim-through anyone can tell has done nothing but cause arguments and negativity and hurt feelings, to call into question the integrity of 1up. I believe my opinion here is justified by the fruits of the article, which are rotten.
To say that this article is "insightful analysis" is complete nonsense. It hardly even qualifies to be an article. This is more of a blog piece containing some very jaded opinions on subjective material; nothing more.
I have no problem with honest journalism or fair, insightful and articulate game reviews (whether or not I agree with them). This is neither a game review, nor is it news, nor is it fair, articulate, or insightful.
I think that about wraps it up for me. I really have nothing left to say. As for you ecchi, I can see it's not in you to be an adult and apologize to me, but that's fine. I forgive you. If you really take a good long read through this conversation, you'll see you were out of line to me on several accounts, and the basis for my complaint is actually quite sound.
I have every right to be offended, just as you have every right to disagree with me. But I've made my case, and made my peace with it. I just hope at least a few heads around 1up take some note of what I'm trying to say here. As a professional establishment, you guys can do much better than this. And if you can't... maybe you need to think about sourcing some new talent.

Between this rant, your subsequent responses to echisquirrell, and all the other shit you've posted to this article, I've come to the conlusion that your problem stems from an inability to accept other people's opinions. So hey, leave 1up if you have to. You'll be doing all of us a favor, I think.

I understand what you were saying in your initial post (pardon for just browsing responses). It's a gripe that I've had with 1up for a while now. I get these same responses from people who just don't seem to understand the glaring issue here.
1up used to be written like a professional publication, not like the rest of the dumbassery of the internet. There is a lack of good journalism. Writers are failing to be objective, not backing up what they are saying with any kind of facts, and generally are pushing their opinions as fact rather just offering up their take on things.
I've been on this site for, what, almost 6 years now? I've seen what it was and what it's become and it has degraded horribly. And I'm bothered by it. The fact that other people aren't is troublesome too. Quality sources are getting harder and harder to find on the internet and seeing this place go downhill leaves us all with just another site.
Sadly, every time you try to express this the general response is a bunch of people calling you an idiot or saying you don't know what you're talking about or telling you to get off the site. It's gotten to the point where I don't even want to read comments or leave any myself anymore. It's just not worth the headache of what's to come after you do...

Took another look at some of the comments here, and... wow. Some of you guys should be ashamed of yourselves.
I mean, you have to expect a certain degree of anger when you make your list of Gaming's Worst X, because half the readers will point out that you mistakenly put the wrong title on Gaming's Best X. But there's voicing your disagreements -- disapproval, even -- and then there's:
"worst article on 1Up"
"half-assed article on music you really don't know anything about"
"get another job, your feature sucks"
Are you nine years old? Do you trolls think, for even a second or two, before you hit that Post Comment button? I probably disagree with Sharkey on a number of things, but I like hearing what the guy has to say, partly because he has a difference of opinion that I find amusing.
I don't ask that you find him amusing. I don't ask that you like hearing what he has to say, or even pretend to. But comments like these are just personal disrespect, so you can make yourself feel good about burning someone on the internet.
But, I guess that's how trolling works. Welcome to the internet, I guess?

why i can be such a big FF fan, like FF8 and most all the FF's, and also not be enraged by this article?
if Eyes On Me was a random song in a run of the mill, quirky, subtitled foreign drama would anybody regard it as the infallible soundtrack to their life and actually listen to it on the way to work?
these kinds of songs might be endearing and endeared to their source material, but it gets to a point where you might as well be listening to "Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing.

Additional FF8 rant...
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by Grim_Jackal
Final Fantasy 8 shouldn't be in there. If anyone compiling this list had actually played the game, you'd know that 'Eyes on Me' is about Laguna and Julia - it is actually Julia singing about her unfulfilled longing for the man that keeps visiting her bar.
The beauty of the song is that it is Laguna's son (with Raine) and Julia's daughter (with General Caraway) that end up falling in love. Those people are of course Squall and Rinoa.
It's a charming story element that you've dismissed completely. The track is INTENDED to be a bar song, nothing more. Very disappointing 1-Up. I can't help but wonder if it was just to score some attention for this article.-
The song is still crap
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by TheHamsterplan
Even though they got the back story wrong, that doesn't mean the song isn't bland amelodic nonsense. And "bar songs" aren't by definition bad either. I know a few people, myself included, who have written pretty awesome "bar songs" in fact.
And really, there's no getting around the fact that Squall is a terrible character.
Sorry, I try not to be this antagonistic and incendiary. Final Fantasy VIII just really makes me angry.

It's one of my favorite songs. Your opinion on the song, the game, or it's characters, whom I find to be great; are just that: your opinions. And that's fine. But some of us have a very personal fondness and oppsite feelings towards them, so try to be more respectful when you post, is all I'd ask.

What, too good for FF8 and Lunar, eh?
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by Fyrebrand
I like those songs, man. Even if their lyrics are, admittedly, poorly written to the point where they are nonsensical. But FF8 isn't about making sense, it's about gunblades and time compression and Rinoa possibly secretly being the villain, and other ridiculous and wonderful things. But, I realize I am the only person who likes FF8 anymore, so I'll just go back to my hole and sulk.

I honestly don't remember where in FF8 (one of my favourite games) Eyes on Me is played.

It plays during the scene on disc 3 where Squall and Rinoa pilot the Ragnarok back into the atmosphere, and Squall battles Rinoa's sexual advances with seatbelt concerns. It's actually kind of a terrible scene, and I love FFVIII.

The song...
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by Fyrebrand
As Totalninja said, the song proper plays once while Squall and Rinoa are floating around in space (man, you do everything in that game). That version is the regular pop-ballad version.
The song also plays during the ending cutscenes, with a more grandiose, symphonic orchestral instrumentation.
There's also a part earlier on, when you play as Laguna, where it's played on piano without the vocals.

Well, first off I respect your opinion on these songs...as they are all painful and this particular version of FVIII's eyes on me sucks, and can cause one's ears to bleed, period.
However, regardless of what you say, the theme originally composed by Nobuo Uematsu (Musical God/Genious) also knows other popular instrumental, orchestrated versions such as "Love Grows" which is nothing short from being EPIC. Aside from that, with all due respect, this article is adressing bad music and not weather you like the game or not, if you hate the game or hold some personal grudge against it, is your personal problem...so next time, try sticking to the topic other than criticizing a story and characters loved by millions. Overall nice topic...cheers!

Dear Sharkey,
While I was glad to see you included Eyes on Me here as it's probably the worst song in the worst JRPG (for reasons of being a genuinely bad game, I know there's plenty of unplayably broken/buggy JRPGs) ever made, I have to object to it not being at the top of the list. It's true the Night Trap song is the same or worse musically, it's hard for me to weight So Bad It's Horrible things, but at least the Night Trap had hilariously terrible acting. Eyes on Me just makes me burn with rage and wish I could kill Tetsuya Nomura with my mind for those terrible character designs he keeps shitting out.

Regarding FFVIII "Eyes on Me" theme
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by Darkle25
Pianist speaking here
I don't know where to start really, not only you are suggesting that Nobuo Uematsu (composer of this song) a man regarded as the most influential video game composer of all times and a TITAN in the industry itself made one of the worst themes in video games history your also saying that the song itself has an orchestral arragement so complex that blurs a "simplistic melody" and it cant be called music anymore??? *sigh*
Lets take a look at your critics shall we?
"Cloying sentimentality, terrible meter, forced rhymes, and instrumentals that would embarrass Celine Dion's backup band"
Yes this song was meant to evoke emotions too bad you don't NONE.....
What does terrible meter even means???.....
Force rhymes, i can see that HOWEVER, it would be very informative for your audience to say that Faye Wong only sings the song. Kako Someya made the lyrics and Nobuo Uematsu made the chord progression and melody CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE .....
Your last critic is plain stupid you clearly have very little knowledge about music please don't say the orchestra was horrible when u cant even understand it,Pop tunes from harmony to melodys are simple PERIOD, this is one of the most loved AND successful themes in FF history you cant simply spit on it because u don't like this kind of pop music.....
To finish this comment i just want to say that i understand that a critic is just a persons opinion and nothing more AND to me you only look like a professional troll whit a space on this webpage....yeah PLEASE keep writing about how much you hate the plain teenagers of FFVIII *sigh*
Next time PLEASE be more informative about your statements to support your critics it would make this site better instead of evoking a flame war whit trolls and fanboys on the comments section THAT IS ALL-

Look at that. You made me emoticon. Do you have any idea how embarrassing that is?
Anyway, nice rant, but I live with a pianist and she also thinks that song is paint-by-numbers tripe. Which not coincidentally seems to be the opinion of anyone who actually listens to anything that isn't videogame music. Try not to give yourself an aneurism over it.

Eyes on Me is awful. It is not loved. And FFVIII is mediocre at best and represents the beginning of a serious drop-off in story quaiity in the series. The song definitely evokes an emotion - embarassment, anger. Just because Uematsu is the man doesn't mean he can't come up with crap occasionally (hell, check out the Black Mages). Sharkey has this one right. Sorry, bud.

Because as we all know

Final Fantasy VII is the pinnacle of the FF series and anything and everything after that is complete shit. I mean literally shit, they smell like what happens after I eat Chipotle, while FFVII smells like a Unicorn pooping Rainbows.

I agree whit you man this is not a good song definitely not the worst tho, again thats my opinion.......what bothers me and the whole reason i wrote a wall text is why not explain anything??? likeeee "hey guys btw this is from 1999 its so cheesy u might puke a rainbow" just be more informative instead of bashing the game, we are talking about music......right? (btw im actually a FFVII fanboy ;)
P.S.
Im sorry for my bad english as u can SEE im not american......btw chuck nobody speaking in here how about.....go back to school?

After seeing the FFVIII song I wondered if that song from Lunar would be on here... it's hard for me to admit that game has ANY flaws... but the song was pretty weak and felt very dated the first time you heard it.

Of course any article claiming the best or worst of anything will have missed a few things in some peoples eyes. Regardless, the criticism was really funny, and a lot of these songs are pretty bad.
Personally I would have thrown in Rob Zombie's Dragula, for being in every PS1 game (or at least in Tony Hawk, Twisted Metal, and Jet Grind Radio)

I didn't really like Eyes On Me that much, either, and this is coming from a pretty big FF fan. It kind of caught me off guard in that "What the hell?" sort of way. But who is to stay I have good taste in FF music, being my favorites tend to come from FFXI, and I know how much Sharkey (or everyone) hates that game.

So much hate in the comments, some people just can't seem to take a joke lol Great feature and I gotta say I love the DK Rap, I know it by heart and sing or hum it sometimes, I'm serious. That said my favorite version is the N64 one and yeah there are 2 versions, the 2nd one was in Melee and it's been redone but they took out the word Hell from the original and replaced it with the word Heck. Don't believe me? Youtube the Melee version since the original is in the article. DK Rap ftw!

Really?? Eyes On Me?
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by Tequila_Shot22
There's a list of things wrong with Final Fantasy VIII but the music would have too be at the bottom of the list. From IV too X, Nobuo Uematsu made masterpeices and Eyes On Me was a solid, romantic, syrupy love song. You may not like the genre of music but it does a good job sounding like a Celion Dion or Mariah Cary song and that was what it was going for. What makes it worse than Suteki Da Ne or Melodies of Life? Everything else I agree but you ABSOULTUELTY SHOULD HAD A SONIC SONG IN THIS!
-
nothing wrong with 8 at all

Nothing personally dude
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by Tequila_Shot22
I didn't like the characters at all. Squall was 2x more annoying than CLoud, Rinoa was boring, Seiffer was a cartoon-cut-out rival, etc. and the leveling up junction system was utterly broken. I could just absorb all the magic I want and make my characters where God. FF V, IX and XII are my favorite ones but hey that's the thing about having opinions. You love FFVIII? More power too you! Everyone hated XII and XIII but I stilled enjoyed them so crazy me.

Re: Knuckles
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by solidsharkey
No way! Knuckles is the best and has the best song and anyone who says different should kill theyselfs cus they LISTEN TO MUSIC WRONG
Check this shit:
Here I come, rougher than the rest of them
the best of them, tougher than leather.
You can call me Knuckles, unlike Sonic I don't chuckle
I'd rather flex my muscles
I'm hard as nails, it ain't hard to tell
I break'em down whether they solid or frail.
Unlike the rest I'm independent
Since my first breath, first test
feel the right then the worse left
Born on an island in the heavens
The blood of my ancestors flows inside me
My duty is to save the flowers from evil deterioration!
I will be the one to set your heart free, true!
cleanse yourself of that evil spirit that got in you
Streaking lights, loud sounds, and instinct
Are the elements that keep me going
I am fighting my own mission
Nothing's gonna stand in my way
I will be the one to set your heart free, true!
cleanse yourself of that evil spirit that got in you!
Won't be frightened I'll stand up to all the pain and turmoil
Just believe in myself won't rely on others
Get this power to wipe out the havoc and anarchy
This is my planet gonna fight for my destiny
Here I come, rougher than the rest of them
the best of them, tougher than leather.
You can call me Knuckles, unlike Sonic I don't chuckle
I'd rather flex my muscles
I'm hard as nails, it ain't hard to tell
I break'em down whether they' solid or frail.
Unlike the rest I'm independent
Since my first breath, first test
feel the right then the worse left
I have no such things as weak spots
Don't approve of him but gotta trust him
This alliance has a purpose
This partnership is only temporary
I will be the one to set your heart free, true!
cleanse yourself of that evil spirit that got in you!
Won't be frightened I'll stand up to all the pain and turmoil
Just believe in myself won't rely on others
Freedom will be waiting when serenity is restored
This is my planet I shall not surrender
(Sax solo, HELLS YES)
Won't be frightened I'll stand up to all the pain and turmoil
Just believe in myself won't rely on others
Get this power to wipe out the havoc and anarchy
This is my planet gonna fight
I won't be frightened I'll stand up to all the pain and turmoil
Just believe in myself won't rely on others
Freedom will be waiting when serenity is restored
This is my planet I shall not surrender
(Yeah,
Shall not surrender, no
Yeah)
The new porcupine on the block with the puff chest
Outta the wilderness with the ruggedness
Knock, knock, it's Knuckles, the blow thrower
Independent flower, magical emerald holder
Give you the coldest shoulder
My spike goes through boulders
That's why I stay a loner
I was born by myself
I don't need a posse, I get in on by myself
Adversaries get shelvedFUCK. YES.

every song with vocals from sonic adventure 1 and 2. they could make me lose a hard on while boning a columbian supermodel.
and in actuality, the DK rap was just dumb enough to be entertaining, kinda like 'work your body' from 1080 snowboarding. i've been caught reciting this with friends while cracking up at eachother, at least a few times.

I like it, but you got Luna wrong..
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by jinkoku
Luna Sings on a Boat (Wings) - Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Both the tune and its lyrics come off an awful lot like something a nine year old would make up after watching way too many Disney movies
.The sad thing is that the American version of this this is the lyrical translation from Japanese to English.
Unlike Dragon Ball Z, whose American theme just said f#$k it.. I will sing something else!
Luna obviously likes to stay true to the content that was written.
Up SIDE - No loss in translation of the meaning and message of the song.
DOWN SIDE - The poetic Japanese prose is something that will NEVER sound right in American ears. Why? Because we like rhyming, and things that make sense! No offense to the writers but after a good 20+ years of watching Anime, and Japanese movies and series, their music is in a class by itself.

Hey, Sharkey...
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by thedubbleb
What are the forced rhymes in Eyes on Me?
Without getting into more subtle assonance or anything like that, the only rhymes in the song are that the first line of each verse is repeated as the third line...hardly forced. Nothing else rhymes period.
(EDIT: Ok...now thinking about it, there's two rhymes in there... "I never sang these words / Wishing they would be heard" and "I saw you staring at me / Was it real or just my fantasy?" ... To call these forced rhymes is overstating it a bit. Have you ever heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers? THERE'S some forced rhyming.)
Also, "terrible meter"? What? It's in 4/4. Like 98% of other music. What's wrong with that?
I get it, man...You're trying to tell jokes here and troll a few people. Final Fantasy VIII, for better or worse, is a nice, big easy target. But, c'mon. You're just making shit up, now. You can do better than that.
-
re: Meter
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by solidsharkey
I meant poetic meter. The song blurs over and adds syllables to make shit fit and leaves emphasis in some really awkward places, which stands out even more with the forced rhymes. Which are all things I'm used to tolerating in fluffy pop songs, but for a tune that's about as aurally complex as Mary Had a Little Lamb, I don't feel quite as forgiving.
Really, if anyone thinks this song is defensible they probably need to get out a bit more.
-
Sure.
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by thedubbleb
I buy that use of the word meter and its corresponding criticism.

Love the Lunar Song
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by Necroserpent
You have to remember that the Sega CD version did not have her even on the boat, so when this came out it was entirely new and exciting. The Lunar games have some of the best music in gaming history, and I happen to like all of them. This should never have been on the list.
As for Final Fantasy I played through the entire game and don't even remember that theme, but the one from Balamb Garden still loops endlessly in my head.
-
How can you not like the DK Rap?
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by Amedeus
That is the best damn song. I think you're listening to it under the pretense that they tried really hard to make it a legitimate, well-done rap song or that it was another bad '90s marketing thing. But they were just shooting for a funny, kind of purposefully not-top-of-the-line kind of deal.
It was like irony, only before irony became popular. Which makes it double-hipster, and since hipster is a negative conotation, two layers of hipster makes it not hipster and it becomes good again.

I second that

First and third pages were spot on, but the second page was a little iffy.
You're really calling out one of The Offspring's best songs because it happened to be overplayed on the radio, and not including ANY themes from any Sonic game? That's kind of weak.
Also, while the SF3 soundtrack in general is amazing, that rap is simply terrible and easily the worst part of the entire game.

I'm assuming you're trolling for responses with your selection of Eye's on Me...while not my favorite it doesn't come clsoe to being on the worst vidogame themes list.....the instrumentals alone are worth the listen.

I think they're right about eyes on me. Never finished VIII but for what I played the song doesn't match the overall vibe of the game world (besides the crappy love story). Take the theme song for FF10, its fits perfectly with the pacific asia inspired world and the scene it's played on. Eyes on Me isn't a bad song necesarily on it's own merits (I love Angela Aki's version) but it is as a video game theme. But hey that's just my opinion.

Not bad at all

I Am the Wind and the Lunar song. I have to agree on SF3 being on here, i just never thought hiphop worked with Street Fighter. When i think of Street Fighter i think of the character themes from SF2 and that were remixed in the Alpha games. I have to ask where is Marvel vs Capcom 2? That game had some abysmal music.

How could you not like that? Its the song everyone associates with that game, not to mention that its used in a SF x Tekken ad! How sweet is that?!

Sonic Heroes Main Theme

How did the Sonic Heroes song not get on this list? Now that is terrible.

Umm

It's so bad it's good XD
I love playing the game - believe me, it's a complete guilty pleasure to enjoy the soundtrack with it.
To make it more contextual, I love my camp and that theme song is certainly a topster on my list of camp music. I sing it to usually annoy my friends if they get on my nerves long enough. Suddenly they stop what ever it is they were teasing me about.
How aboot that eh?

I hated that the new theme for the live version was some different song! I was able to change the character select screen song, but unfortunately i am still stuck listening to that new tune...

Localization
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by WolvenOne
I feel inclined to point out, that while Eyes on Me and Luna's Boat Song were never GREAT songs, they were severely hurt by poor localization. I mean, forced rhymes, amaturish vocals, those are telltale signs of a quick and dirty translation.

Eyes on Me--

Was always in English, even in the Japanese version of the game.

Regarding "I Am the Wind"...
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by SargeSmash
...I'm pretty darn sure that the song was in the Japanese release as well. It's not just something that was added for us gaijin. And honestly, I kind of like its presence there. It's different, and interesting, even if you're not a big fan of that style of music.

The theme of Final Fantasy VIII
Posted: Oct 27, 2011 12:00AM PST by smmac41
and the story and the characters (especially Squall Leonhart, my favorite character ever) are amazing. Not only does it bring back great memories of one of the greatest games ever, it is still just as good to this day.

Nostalgia

You're mistaking nostalgia for a well crafted game. Final Fantasy VIII is behind only Final Fantasy II for worst of the franchise (let's wait and see what happens with XIV). In actuality the game is bad, the song is bad, and the characters are bad. Seriously, you know you have a bad character when he makes Cloud look good in comparison.

Nah...

From what I hear, 14 is easily the worst by a long shot. But after that 3 takes the cake. It's much worse than 2 or 8.

Nostalgia

is for wimps. I base my favorite games on whether they are still great to play today. Final Fantasy VIII is one of the great games of all time. Anybody who says different doesn't like JRPGs. Everything about FFVIII is amazing. It's still not as good as FFVII though.

Maybe it's nostalgia for you, but to other people it may be more than that. And you can't obviously claim what his feelings for the game really is, since clearly you're not him. FF8 may have it's haters, and I for one got bored of it in some parts, but it's still great to me. Be it the story, or the graphics(for it's time) and cool design, it's a great RPG to replay once in a while.
Squall it's my favorite character of all FF series :D I fell in love with him the second I saw him.
I still don't get why this article says that Rinoa is boring when in fact she was spontaneos, cheerful, with a strong will. Or maybe the writer of this article has a really bad memory.

Different Strokes/Different Folks

Not everybody likes the same thing. I think it's important to remember that before dismissing someone's opinion as nothing but flawed and nostalgiac memory.
Personally I really like VIII and think it's the best of the PS1 bunch. I've never been able to understand all the hate that one gets. It seems so bizarre to me since I like it so much.
VII was good, but I don't care to replay it and think it's a bit overated by gamers in general.
With IX I can't for the life of me figure out why people like that one at all. That one bores me to tears. I've tried to force myself to finish it three times and haven't succeeded yet. I always end in the same place too. Once I see extra "Zidanes," I'm done. It hasn't failed yet. I don't even know how close I am to the end. It could be only another 15 minutes for all I know, but I just can't take it anymore.
As far as the song from VIII? Meh, I could probably go without all the vocal theme songs from all the recent FF titles. They should all go in the same spot above.

Gonna have to agree...

That FF VIII is one of the best in the franchise and has some of the best music, characters, and story as well. Let the haters hate and reminisce about playing Madden or something.
