Dallas County Medical Examiner rules “dog mauling” cause of Kaufman woman's death

Dallas County Medical Examiner rules “dog mauling” cause of Kaufman woman's death A Kaufman County Sheriff's Office photo of one of the pit bulls seized from the property of an apparent dog mauling in Kaufman, Texas.
KAUFMAN, Texas – The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the cause of death for Dorothy Hamilton as a “dog mauling,” according to a report released earlier today.
85-year-old Hamilton was found dead in the living room of her home in the 1400 block of East First North Street in Kaufman, Texas, on March 31, 2014, by her son at approximately 4:46 p.m. Investigators initially believed two pit bulls found in the home were responsible for her death.

The Medical Examiner's report states the manner of death was accidental and caused by “dog mauling with lacerations and puncture wounds.” The two dogs involved in the mauling were euthanized.

According to Kaufman Police Department Captain Ed Black, the case will be turned over to the Kaufman County District Attorney's Office for referral to a grand jury to determine any criminal charges.

An additional six pit bulls were seized at the home which were being kept outside. The remaining six dogs are in the custody of Kaufman County animal control pending the court proceedings.

The dogs belong to Hamilton's son who was keeping the dogs at Hamilton's residence for several months. The two dogs involved in the attack were being kept in a bedroom inside the home but had “broken through the door to get to the victim,” according to police.
