KANSAS CITY, Kan. - William Byron captured his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series win in a wild overtime finish to the Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway.

The Kyle Busch Motorsports driver earned win No. 1 in only his fifth career start and became the youngest winner at Kansas Speedway at 18 years old.

Byron was able to survive the wild last lap of overtime that looked as if Johnny Sauter and Ben Rhodes were going to decide the winner until they made contact in turn four.

That left the door open for Byron to charge by and score the victory.

“It was crazy the last couple of restarts,” Byron said. “I had the lead there on the green-flag run. I was really just praying for no cautions, but you have to earn it. My crew chief, Rudy Fugle, really told me that on all the restarts, ‘This is how you earn it.'”

Byron looked like he’d score a comfortable win when he was out front with four laps to go, but Tyler Reddick’s spin brought out the caution and bunched up the field for the wild restart.

“This is a dream come true,” Byron said. “I was 6 years old watching Truck races and didn’t start racing until I was 14. To be in a Toyota Tundra like this is amazing.”

Sauter was not pleased with Rhodes after their incident.

"I got run over by a bozo,” he said. “I don't know if the kid's brain-dead or can't see. It’s just unfortunate that sometimes you can’t race the way you want to.”

Byron saw things with a different perspective.

“Johnny came down as I was trying to hold my line,” he said. “It’s unfortunate because this team works so hard and I thought we had a truck capable of winning tonight. Disappointing for sure.”

Matt Crafton, Daniel Hemric, Christopher Bell and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top five.

“It’s a shame,” said Crafton, who led 57 laps and made contact with Peters earlier in the race. “We had the truck to beat but that’s just racing.”

Ryan Truex, Cole Custer, Timothy Peters, Ben Kennedy and Spencer Gallagher completed the first 10 finishers.

The win earns Byron a spot in the Camping World Truck Series Chase. Peters lead the point standings.

The race was slowed by 11 caution periods.

The series now heads to Dover International Speedway next Friday.
