CBS News and NBC News, which both cites sources that confirmed the gunman's identity, reported that Mateen was born in 1986 and last lived in St. Port Lucie, which is a city in St. Lucie County, about 107 miles (173 kilometers) southeast of Orlando.

Mateen was born in the state of New York but his parents were born in Afghanistan, the reports said. He is not believed to have been on any terrorism watch lists.

Police have not yet confirmed the identity, but authorities are due to hold a new press conference at 9:30 a.m. ET. Investigators are still working to confirm a motive for the killings, which left at least 20 people dead.
