Call for Papers: Summer Graduate Research Colloquium

Continuing the IHS legacy of supporting classical liberal academics, the Summer Graduate Research Colloquium will allow graduate students to present their research in a conference-style setting to top scholars in their discipline. The colloquium presents a unique opportunity to receive constructive feedback on your paper and presentation with a view toward publication. The Summer Graduate Research Colloquium is open to graduate students pursuing liberty-advancing research in the humanities and social sciences.

The colloquium will take place on July 7-10, 2016 at Towson University in Towson, MD.

Plenary sessions for the colloquium will feature faculty from a variety of disciplines that will be announced closer to the date of the event.

Participation in the Colloquium will be determined upon the submission of an abstract.

Papers should address a subject of scholarly significance and further our understanding of the principles which contribute to a more just, peaceful, and prosperous world.

The colloquium will feature topics in philosophy, economics, political science, history, and other related fields in the humanities and social sciences. Papers that use interdisciplinary and mixed methodological approaches are welcome, though not required.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What happens at an IHS colloquium?

IHS colloquia are packed with interesting lectures, lively discussion, and opportunities to socialize. You will hear from distinguished faculty and have a chance to further discuss your lingering questions during meals, breaks, and evening discussion sessions. Most importantly, you will be encouraged to think for yourself as we explore questions of freedom and social order.

Who are the colloquium faculty?

IHS assembles top-notch faculty from colleges and universities around the United States, and occasionally from other countries. We choose our faculty for their enthusiasm, excellence in teaching, expertise, and diverse academic backgrounds.

Who attends the Summer Research Colloquium?

Graduate students in beginning and culminating phases of study attend the colloquium. Early-stage graduate students receive ideas, guidance, and inspiration for dissertation topics; late-stage students and post-docs have the opportunity to present papers, build a professional network, and strategize about next steps toward careers in academia.

Why does IHS offer colloquia? Who pays for them?

The Institute for Humane Studies sponsors the attendance of students at its research colloquia to encourage the discussion and understanding of the principles of a free society. IHS is an independent, nonprofit, educational organization. It was founded in 1961 by Dr. F. A. Harper to foster research and education about freedom. The Institute offers financial assistance, education, and career development to students who are interested in the study of liberty so that they can have the opportunity to unleash their unique potential. These programs are funded through contributions to IHS from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
