Nose and Sinus
Drs. Hengy and Mendians are highly trained to treat various conditions of the nose and sinuses.
Nosebleeds (epistaxis) can be caused by many factors including but not limited to allergies, vigorous nose blowing, clotting disorders and (rarely) tumors. It is important to seek medical attention if the nosebleed will not stop or reoccurs. Drs. Hengy and Mendians will complete a full examination of the area to determine the cause of the nosebleeds. Medications may be placed inside the nostril to constrict the blood vessels and reduce the swelling. Blood tests may also be needed to determine effects of any blood thinning medications the patient may be making.
Nasal fractures are typically caused by trauma to the nose. Symptoms may include nose pain, swelling of the nose, bruising around the nose and eyes or nosebleed. It is necessary to get a CT scan of the nose to determine the degree of trauma. Treatment may include, ice applied to the affected area, over the counter pain medication, placing of a splint or nasal packing to straighten the nose or surgery if the fracture is more severe. Closed or Open Nasal Bone Fracture Reduction Surgery.
Loss of smell (Anosmia)
Loss of smell (Anosmia) can be a problem by itself or a symptom of another health problem. It can be caused by colds, sinusitis, allergies, smoking, some medications or head injury. It can be diagnosed by a head, neck and nose exam along with possible blood tests and MRI or CT scan of the head. Treatment depends on what is determined to be the cause.
Sinus Problems (Sinusitis)
Sinus problems (Sinusitis) is an inflammation of the tissue lining of the sinuses and symptoms may include a constantly running nose, trouble sleeping at night, loss of smell, nasal congestion, fullness in ears, and green, yellow or bloody drainage from the nose, trouble tasting food, frequent headaches or facial pain. Drs. Hengy and Mendians will administer a physical examination along with possible blood work, allergy testing, CT scan, mucus culture or nasal endoscopy. You may be treated with medications and possibly sinus surgery. Image Guided Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery or Balloon Sinus Dilation Surgery.
