Tokyo ward mayors ask Masuda to run

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Tokyo ward mayors called on former Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Hiroya Masuda on Monday to run in the July 31 gubernatorial election for the Japanese capital.

Taiichiro Nishikawa, head of the association for mayors of Tokyo’s 23 wards, made the request in a meeting with Masuda. According to Nishikawa, 21 of the 23 mayors want Masuda to bid for the governorship.

Masuda told Nishikawa that what is important in the election is whether a new governor will be able to resolve a series of challenges facing Tokyo.

“I will make a decision after due consideration,” Masuda added.Speech
