Snooker: Head injury forces Davis to concede

Steve Davis, the six-times world champion, was taken to a private clinic for precautionary X-rays after hitting his head on a steel door frame at the Haidian Stadium here yesterday.

Davis, 3-0 down at the time, was forced to concede his last 16 China Open contest against Ricky Walden when he retired eight minutes into frame four, because he felt unwell.

Davis, who had earlier struck his head while attempting to escape Chinese autograph hunters, was given a pain-killing tablet backstage before being taken by car to a nearby clinic.

Later Davis returned to his hotel having been given a clean bill of a health.

"I didn't want to reach my first quarter-final like that," said Walden, 22, who lives in North Wales and is ranked No 78.

Walden will now face Stephen Hendry for a place in the semi-finals, the seven times world champion having beaten Ryan Day 5-1 earlier.

John Higgins, No 5 on the world rankings, also bowed out, losing 5-3 to fellow Scot, Alan McManus.

China's Ding Junhui was involved in an amazing finale as he went through 5-4 against Stuart Bingham.

Ding led 4-2 but was forced to play the decider in which he went 43 points behind. He fought back before winning with a yellow to pink clearance and a fluke across the bottom cushion on the brown.
