‘It’: Here’s Who’s Testing For the Role of Pennywise! (Exclusive)

Update: News just broke that “Hemlock Grove’s” Bill Skarsgard is in final negotiations for the role! Details can be found here.

One of the biggest issues with remaking A Nightmare On Elm Street is that nobody can replace Robert Englund in the role of Freddy Krueger. It’s easier for franchises like Friday the 13th or Halloween because, Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, respectively, are silent killers who don a mask.

This is where New Line Cinema’s re-adaptation of Stephen King’s It has a small conundrum; nobody will be able to replace Tim Curry as the malevolent clown, Pennywise.

The biggest difference between Freddy and Pennywise, though, is that the latter isn’t nearly as notable or pop culture penetrating as the Dream Demon.

I don’t think any of us are worried that we’re going to see a new Pennywise. In fact, I’m pretty stoked that New Line is attempting a feature version of this terrifying King story that taps into the vein of Stand By Me.

It’s been longstanding that Will Poulter had been cast as Pennywise when Cary Fukunaga was attached to direct.

Reports surfaced in April that Poulter has since dropped out, due to scheduling conflicts, while our own sources told us that he’s still in contention as Mama director Andy Muschietti will hold his own auditions.

We’ve learned that there’s not only been auditions, but that various actors have been part of make-up tests.

One of the most exciting names in contention is Kirk Acevedo, we can exclusively report.

While many of you may know Acevedo from his roles in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, pictured above, “Band of Brothers,” “Fringe,” and “12 Monkeys,” I became a massive fan watching him on HBO’s prison series, “Oz”.

It should be clear that a handful of actors are being tested. Still, I personally think Acevedo is as inspired of a choice as Poulter, whose exit I’m still mourning.

Stephen King’s It will rise from the sewers on September 8, 2017.

What do you guys think?

  • Carl Griffiths

He was just awful in OZ, so hammy, so I’m not overly excited to hear this news.

    • JRome

Remembering that the character Pennywise is a demon thing come by way of murderous clown. Understatement serves not so terribly much in this regard. But then I thought he was great in Oz so we’re just begging to differ.

  • sliceanddice

anyone else thin it has aged horribly?

  • Marla

    • No one wanted the crap miniseries.

    • Ms. Ripley

Who’s in his earley 20’s? Will Poulter dropped out of it and Kirk Acevedo is 44. And besides, why are you screaming? 🙂

      • I am sure that Mr. Acevedo will at least get an ego boost by someone saying he looks like hes in the early 20s, lol.

    • Braker

Have you seen the television version of IT recently? It could use some polishing.

    • Bryant Burnette

No one should type entirely in caps.

  • Simon Allen

i’m pretty sure this movie is gonna end with a LOAD of really bad CGI .

  • Jerzy Andrzej Haftka

I don’t get why are people so upset? The original “IT” has nothing except the amazing Tim Curry but the whole movie is a fucking joke.

  • Ms. Ripley

Hu, hard to say how Kirk Acevedo would turn out as Pennywise. I have only seen the guy as military/agent/tough guy. Which doesn’t mean that he’d do a bad job.
Do I think it “It” has to be redone? Nope, not at all. But I am sure as hell excited to watch another “It”!

  • Mike

First heard of this guy when he voiced Jackie Estacado in the 2007 “The Darkness” video game. He did good work and of course the wonderful Mike Patton voicing The Darkness itself.

    • Byron Dunbar

Imagine if Patton played Pennywise! Now that would be cool.

      • Rick-Taylor

        I am all for this!

        • Creepshow

I’d prefer if Patton got his ass back in the studio with Faith No More. And work on putting out a better album than their last extremely unsatisfactory mess. (off topic, but I had to get that off my chest) lol

          • Rick-Taylor

I agree, although I’m a casual fan of some of his work, and not a fan of some of his other work.

          • Creepshow

Yeah, he’s all over the map and rarely sticks to one thing. He tends to gravitate towards the odd and unusual. (like the album he sings in Italian and his umpteen side projects)

  • gabriel

I wonder if jon bernthal is auditioning, he would be pretty good too. But this Acevedo guy i know nothing about.

    • Ms. Ripley

Jon Bernthal? Where is this coming from? Just curious!

  • Ben_Jammin

Miguel Alvarez as Pennywise? Heh! Who’da thought?

  • JRome

Well Acevedo certainly has the innate gravitas and then there’s that voice….Lordhavemercy….is certainly killer. So I guess it’s not a big leap to be the eater of children.

  • BrannigansLaw

I feel like Doug Jones would be fun to watch as Pennywise.

    • James

      He would be perfect

  • Rick-Taylor

I have never seen Michael C. Hall in a very animated role, but, if they were going for a more sedated Pennywise; Michael would fit.

  • Rick-Taylor

If the new singer (new to me, at least) from Arch Enemy can play the country’s first female serial killer, Mike Patton should ace Pennywise.

  • imsofancy

I’m not a big horror fan but I’m a HUGE Kirk Acevedo fan, plus he’s edgy as eff.

  • The Drucifer

Tilda Swindon or close up shop.

  • JRome

Everything he does is tinged in evil. Even his good guys are conflicted and dark. I think he’s a character actor at heart it just gets lost in those good looks. Not a problem when covered in clown makeup though. I’m liking the Acevedo of it all.

    • JerryWorld

      Band of Brothers?

      • JRome

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Oz. The Black Donnely’s. 12 monkeys. Didn’t see his hero turn in Band of Brothers.

  • enemy

I think that’s what pennywise needs someone who isn’t a huge recognisable name in Hollywood but has that creepy look about them. If will poulter didn’t have they eyebrows he wouldn’t even be considered to play pennywise.
