Description:
Here's my submission for the 2009 Anniversary Painting Competition, which took me somewhere between 25 to 30 hours of painting to complete.
I used lots of layering on the Unicorn, from Chaos Black up to Skull White, to get the shading.
Photographing it was very difficult in order to get the right balance because of the extemes of colour contrast between the white of the Unicorn to the dark green of the Fey Enchantress' robes and the foliage both on the Unicorn and on the base.
Hence, I took so many photos to, hopefully, do justice to all the shading.
I have to say that this is one of the ugliest looking female miniatures I've ever painted so far...

I'm sorry to hear that you don't like your handiwork on this miniature Sir Guy, I however love the bold colors, details like the blue tint to the sword blade and the green hue to the rock on the base, and your faces never cease to amaze me. This also looks to be one of GW's better damsel models. My only criticism would be the shading on the horse. Though not trying to be rude it looks like you tried layering without much of and undercoat. I feel that this was effective on the horse's head maybe the rest of the body needs a different approach. That's the only flaw I can see otherwise I find it fantastic!
SA,
Thanks for your comments.
I actually base-coated the Unicorn with Chaos Black first, and then layered from that progressively through lighter shade of grey, finishing with Skull White.
So what you might think is the metal casting showing through the white is the natural shading of the hollows sculpted into the Unicorn's legs and body.
Sir Guy
I think that SA mistook your comment about the ugliness. Not your painting - but the model itself. I don't mind the model - as a damsel - not the Fay (hence removed the horn myself). You know it's a good shading job when the final highlights look like a flash went off when one wasn't used. Well done!
