Bagel is the only tape measure you will ever need. With three different measuring modes, Bagel lets you measure just about anything.
It can also save measurements, record voice memos, and send data to its mobile app, where you can easily organize and analyze your measurements. That’s why we call Bagel a smart tape measure.
We all measure size in our daily lives. Whether it’s for a DIY home improvement project or for measuring body size, everyone uses a tape measure.
Despite the various uses for a tape measure, the way we measure size has remained the same for more than a century. It’s about time that we stop trying so hard to read tiny numbers and markings on tape measures.
Bagel is easy to use. Select one mode from three different measuring modes, take a measurement, then click the save button to save your data.
You can also choose to add a voice memo that describes what you measured. As soon as you connect Bagel to its mobile app, this voice recording will be automatically converted into text and tagged to your measurement.
You can use Bagel's string mode to measure length like you would with a traditional tape measure. Its flexible yet strong string allows you to easily measure curved objects and surfaces, various body types, and- needless to say- flat surfaces. Bagel's string mode can measure up to about 10 feet (3 meters).
Wheel mode is great when you don’t have both hands available to measure length or distance. Just switch to Bagel's wheel mode and roll its wheel. Wheel mode is perfect for measuring distance on curved surfaces and can measure up to about 33 feet (10 meters).
When you want to measure the distance to areas that are far away or hard to reach, use Bagel’s remote mode. Simply point the ultrasonic sensor at objects, walls, or ceilings and Bagel will tell you how far away they are. The remote mode automatically activates a laser that points at your target spot to indicate where you are measuring. You can measure up to 16 feet 4 inches (5 meters) in remote mode.
After taking your measurement, save the data with just a click of a button. You can also choose to record a voice memo that describes what you just measured. Never experience the hassle of going back and forth between your notepad and tape measure!
We wouldn’t call Bagel smart if that was all. You can connect Bagel to your smartphone via Bluetooth and transfer all of your measurements to Bagel’s mobile app.
Use Bagel’s app and never lose measurements again. You can browse through your measurements, all of which are tagged with a voice memo. Additionally, take advantage of the app's ability to export your data as CSV to use on your computer.
If you want to track your body size, simply open up a graph that will display how your measurements have changed over time.
Both iOS and Android versions of the mobile app will be available for free.
You don't have to connect Bagel to your smartphone every time you want to take a look at past measurements. Bagel has internal memory that can save up to 100 measurements and voice memos. You can easily bring up all of your logs on its digital display.
There’s no need to worry about replacing the batteries. Bagel is built with a lithium polymer battery that lasts up to 24 hours and averages 8 hours with constant use. Any micro USB cable lying around the house is fit to charge Bagel.
Bagel is for everyone. Whether you use inches or centimeters to measure size, Bagel will adapt to meet your needs. On Bagel's mobile app, you can even choose to display your measurements in feet or meters.
We’ve experimented with various types of sensors, but decided to develop our own. Bagel’s sensor is backed by six patents and we couldn’t be more excited to share its abilities with you.
The error for all three modes should be within 0.5% under room temperature conditions. We are working hard on our firmware to lower the error margin and will provide all updates on any accuracy improvements.
We believe in the power of design. We’ve gone through numerous prototypes to make Bagel sleek and easy to hold. Take a look below to see how Bagel has evolved from its first design to its current and final design.
We’ve come a long way since last June when we first came up with the idea to create a smart tape measure.
Although size measurements are one of the most important ways to describe an object, measuring length or distances have been left to old, traditional tools such as a tape measure.
We believed there was so much room to improve how we measure objects. Through digitizing size, our lives can be easier, better, and more efficient.
With these beliefs in mind, our team spent countless nights designing, prototyping, testing, programming, and traveling across the globe to pitch our idea and receive feedback on Bagel.
We are a small, tight-knit team made strong by our members who are experienced professionals in various fields. Although we have different backgrounds in engineering, design, finance, and marketing, we all share one common goal: to innovate the way people measure size.

Any project could encounter unexpected obstacles, and this possibility is even more likely in the case of a hardware technology project that requires manufacturing. Keeping this in mind, we have already started to tackle some of these obstacles early on in order to minimize any delays.
1. One potential problem is the lead time before various parts of Bagel arrive. Lead time is the time between placement of an order and delivery of the product. In the case of an encoder that is essential to Bagel’s sensors, the lead time can be up to 8 weeks. In order to meet Bagel’s expected delivery date in November, we have already placed an order for 10,000 units. If we need more units to match the demand of our backers, we will place another order for the encoders during the Kickstarter campaign to ensure punctual delivery.
2. A second potential problem is preparing for the injection molding manufacturing process. Injection molding is the fastest and most reliable way to manufacture Bagel. To produce different parts of Bagel, we will have to create 14 molds before production begins. We have already finalized blueprints for each part and secured relationships with two trusted manufacturing companies in South Korea. Additionally, we are in the process of manufacturing 100 Bagels set to arrive in July using a family injection mold. Family injection molds allow us to manufacture a smaller batch of units but with a less detailed finish. These Bagels will be used as samples for various tests- and we will definitely share the results with our backers.
We are fully aware that unexpected bumps in the road may arise, but our team is dedicated to doing whatever it takes to keep our promises. We will update you on our progress and can’t wait to hear feedback from our backers in order to deliver the best Bagel possible.
Learn about accountability on KickstarterThe single goal of our Kickstarter campaign is to get our product out to as many backers as possible. We would hate for the shipping fee to deter potential fans from joining our campaign. Despite what it seems, we have tried and are trying our best to find the lowest shipping rates that guarantee safe delivery of Bagel to our backers. We are not profiting from the shipping fees; the listed prices are the lowest and the exact amount our shipping partners have given us.
Additionally, unlike some campaigns that automatically add shipping costs to the reward levels, we did not do so. We strive to be 100% transparent about our costs.
Last but not the least, a lithium-polymer battery is embedded inside of Bagel. This type of battery requires special shipping services that are different from services that deliver ordinary packages, thus coming at a higher price.
Currently, we are working diligently to find partners who can guarantee low prices and safe delivery. We would love to hear any suggestions from our backers, so feel free to help us out. Needless to say, we will update everyone with our progress regarding lower shipping costs. Thank you!
Bagel is made out of polycarbonate, a material known to be have extremely high impact resistance. Polycarbonate is used to create shatterproof windows, police shields, etc. Thus, we are confident that Bagel will be very durable.
To put Bagel to the test, we will run various trials when we receive samples of our product in July. We will drop Bagel from various heights, perhaps test if it can resist being hit by a hammer, and so much more. We will take videos of all the tests and share them with you. Stay tuned to see for yourself how durable Bagel is!
