Diff the Dragon – Part Seventeen: A Long Week

A Long Week

Diff the Dragon by Angela Lott, illustrations by Richard Bartrop. An Okal Rel Universe Legacy Novella featuring the young Alivda

Angela Lott is the middle child of Lynda’s three daughters. She did two years of Business schooling at the College of New Caledonia and is now working as a receptionist at her local FYiDoctors. In her spare time she enjoys writing, video blogging, reading and watching very nerdy TV shows.

Part 17

The week without Amel passed slowly for little Diff because she missed him, but for Perry the week went by even slower; she couldn’t handle this child and she knew it. A Vrellish child was not like a normal child. And this Vrellish child was bored.

“Gramma,” Alivda said from the top of the bookshelf. “Let’s do something! Something fun!”

“Oh no!” Perry said, thinking about the last time.

“I’m bored!” Alivda said, now swinging from a light fixture on the ceiling.

“Then be bored,” Perry said, while she thought, only three more days.

Alivda made a sound that Perry could only compare to the cry of a wild animal and jumped back on the bookshelf. There was a loud crack, and the bookshelf collapsed.

Perry just stared at it; no emotion registered on her face, she was too numb with shock for that.

Alivda went crashing to the ground with the books, but her cat-like agility made her land gracefully on top without a scratch on her.

She giggled, finally entertained, while standing on the pile of books and before Perry could even get up, she had started going through them.

In this illustration by Debbie Ha, we see the wonder of discovery through the eyes of Voltan, who has finally found a way to put his hyperactive mind to good use. He explores and manipulates protein structure using interactive goggles and gloves—which he masters immediately. Although Prokhor, his mentor, showed Voltan the door, it’s almost as if the mentor is clutching on, trying not to be left behind.

The curse of Voltan’s genetics turns into an asset as he makes leaps and bounds in the research to end the war. It provides a little bit of calm for him, distracting him from all the tragedy long enough to begin the process of healing. And although he gazes intently at projected proteins, his thoughts and purpose remain to save his siblings and everyone else in the Grianach district.

Part 16

“Where were you last night?” Perry asked casually the next morning. “I didn’t see you when I woke up.”

“With Diff,” Amel said.

“Were you with her all night?” Perry asked.

“Well, yeah,” Amel said. “She was crying.”

Perry sighed. “And Horth Nersal will give a speech before you let a child cry all alone in the dark.”

Amel smiled; she knew him so well.

“Oh, and Perry,” Amel said, “do you think you can take Alivda for a few days? I am due back at home and Ev’rel isn’t away like last time.”

“Last time, huh,” Perry said. “Wasn’t that when you let her cut off all her hair?”

“I didn’t let her do anything!” Amel said. “And I made sure it was even, didn’t I?”

“She looked like a boy for months!” Perry said. “Ayrium was not happy!”

“Yeah well, if she cares so much, she should look after her own daughter for a change,” Amel shot back, though he didn’t really mean it.  “I will be a week at the most.”  He made to leave.

“Wait, I haven’t said yes yet.”

“But you will, right?”

Perry sighed. “Do I have a choice?”

Amel grinned, kissed Perry good-bye, and left.

“Gramma,” Alivda said, coming into the room with sleep in her eyes. “Where did Amel go?”

“Home,” Perry said bluntly.

“Why?” Alivda sniffled.

“He has grown up stuff to deal with, then he will be right back,” Perry said.

“Oh,” Alivda said, sullen.

“But we will have fun without him,” Perry said, hoping that Alivda's ideas of fun no longer included destroying her home.

“Humph,” Alivda said, and went to the kitchen.

That child will eat me out of house and home, Perry thought as she followed.

The genetically-enhanced citizens of Monitum don't get to enjoy the benefits of their special blood. They are hunted and ostracized, and flee to the farmhouse where Nestor's wife Remei takes them in. She's overwhelmed and the house is full of starving, wounded refugees. The foster children, Olivia and Pleo, are neglected and the fragile strands holding the family together threaten to snap.

It's only when the murderous mob surrounds the house that everyone comes together, and it might be too late. In this illustration by Jeff Doten we see Nestor and Remei defending the farmhouse from the hatred and prejudice that has already spiraled out of control. It is a moment when all could be lost, and this scene determines the fate of every character in the book.
