Artist Frequently Asked Questions

Visual Artists

  • What is Artomatic?

Artomatic is a month-long multimedia arts event that draws together visual and performing artists and brings their work to the community. Artomatic is free and open to everyone.

    How often is Artomatic held?

We try to organize a large scale Artomatic every 1-3 years, depending largely on finding an appropriate space for it. Smaller events are held throughout the year that provide opportunities for visual and performing artists. Artomatic 2012 was the eighth large scale event since 1999.

How do I register for Artomatic?

Artomatic registration is online. When registration is open, notification goes out via the Artomatic newsletter, social media, and an announcement will be placed on this website.

Do I have to pay to participate in Artomatic as a visual artist?

Yes, visual artists pay a registration fee and sign up to staff the event for three 5-hour shifts.

Where does my Artomatic registration fee or my donations go?

Artomatic is a nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers. The organization has no offices nor paid staff. Whatever money Artomatic receives is used directly to run its events, Web site and other arts-related activities. Every donation Artomatic receives, whether from individual contributors, registration fees or sponsors, is vital to the organization.

What are the shift requirements for visual artists?

Each visual artist must contribute three 5-hour shifts before, during, or after the show. Extra shifts are encouraged. You do not have to be an artist showing work to volunteer for shifts; the general public may volunteer as well.

Do I get to pick what hours I work? How is the scheduling done?

You select your shifts when you register online for Artomatic. You may pick any available shift that you want. Make a note of the dates and times you select for your shifts. Please be aware that the best shifts fill up quickly.

How many visual artists will there be at the next Artomatic? How much wall/floor space can I have?

Every Artomatic is different and each artist’s exhibit area is based on useable space within a building. During an event each 2-D, 3-D and installation artist will be accommodated as best as possible.

When and how do I pick my space?

Once you register for an event you will be given a date and time to attend an orientation and select space. All artists MUST attend orientation to participate in Artomatic.

Can I show in more than one room?

Artomatic is about participation and cooperation. Each person gets one space, and the spaces vary by the size of the wall or area in the building.

    What can I display?

Since Artomatic is non-juried, you can display any of your work within the parameters of your wall/floor space as well as the installation rules.

Do I have to leave a deposit?

Installation artists need to leave a $150 deposit check at the intake desk on site-selection weekend. The deposit will be returned during de-installation after the artist’s area is broom clean. Artists whose work is 2-D and 3-D do not leave a deposit.

  • Visual artists exhibit a wide variety of art: painting, photography, collage, assemblage, found art, ceramics, glass, fiber, mixed media, video, furniture, jewelry, sculpture, installation, and more!

Artomatic is not juried. That is, participation is based on a first-come basis and no one needs to see your art in advance. It’s open to all artists 18 and older.
