The Naked Feminist

Documentary, 2004, Dir. Louisa Achille

This documentary about women in the adult entertainment industry hit the ground running, taking an audience choice award in Emerging Visions Documentary category at SXSW in 2004. The film has had screenings continuously since; graduating from the festival circuit to museums and universities. Almost ten years later the film still has screening dates around the world, and has become an important educational material for womens' studies in a range of tertiary institutions.

I was delighted to take on the challenge of editing this film, which we undertook from hundreds of hours of footage in only four weeks. We allowed a day and a half for GFX, which I also undertook, as well as sound design, online and the supervision of post production. The few of us who worked on the film got no joy from writing our own names all over the credits, and made up 'porn names' for ourselves - which may or may not have been the smartest thing ever - but it gave us some stress relief after an intense period of creative work with a technically challenging film.

The project is one I am very attached to and proud of. The film does deal with a topic that is not everyone's cup of tea. Please bear in mind that if you wish to view the excerpt below, it is rated R in Australia, and contains adult themes, nudity, and high level sexual references.

This 58 minute award winning documentary challenges the myths surrounding women in the porn industry while exploring preconceived notions of control, pleasure and exploitation. Through candid behind the scenes interviews with pornstars, academics and feminists this informative and straight-talking documentary strips away the ideological straitjacket surrounding the decades-old porn versus feminist debate by demonstrating that strong, inspirational women are found in all walks of life - including pornography.

Featuring Betty Dodson, Jane Hamilton, Nina Hartley, Christi Lake, Marilyn Chambers, Ginger Lynn-Allen, Sharon Mitchell, Candida Royalle, Annie Sprinkle and Veronica Vera.

Whether you sit on one side or the other of the fence regarding feminism and pornography, this film is amazing and I would encourage any adult to give consideration to the open debate that evolves within The Naked Feminist
