Hi Kelly, I have a 10 year old cat and I noticed she seems to have a little stiffness when she first gets up. Was wondering if cats are able to take Cosequin or a similar product? Or is there another product you could recommend. Thanks. -Margaret-
Hey Margaret… The brand “Cosequin” is a great joint supplement product and it is available in a dog formula and a cat formula. The Cosequin for cats contains Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Manganese. It is available in an appealing chicken or tuna flavored capsule that can be mixed into canned food easily. Check out their website for more details: http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/index.php/cat/cat-joint-bone-health/cosequin-for-cats.
Besides the obvious joint health benefits of Glucosamine and Chondroitin (may help control symptoms of arthritis and osteoarthritis and supports cartilage production and protects existing cartilage from breaking down), the Glucosamine is also helpful in that it “coats” the bladder walls which protects the bladder and prevents harmful bacteria and other waste products from sticking to the wall and causing infections in the bladder and urinary tract in general. This is a big bonus, particularly with cats.
There are certainly many other products on the market today, but the Cosequin brand seems to have a long history and many veterinarians who strongly recommend the brand to their clients. Incidentally, I have used the Cosequin for my cat who had to have a cystotomy almost six years ago due to a Urethral blockage. >^..^<
