Here we’ll guide you through all the necessary steps to get Mac OS X Snow Leopard installed on your Dell Mini 10v netbook, including updating it safely to 10.6.2.

Requirements:

  • Dell Mini 10v with at least 8GB of hard disk space
  • Mac OS X Snow Leopard retail disc
  • Intel-based Mac with DVD-ROM drive and USB port
  • 8GB or larger external USB drive (hard disk or flash drive)
  • NetbookBootMaker
  • NetbookInstaller

On your Mac with DVD-ROM drive and USB port:

  1. Insert the Mac OS X Snow Leopard retail disc into the Mac’s DVD drive, and connect the external USB drive to the Mac too.
  2. If your Mac is running Mac OS X 10.6 or later then launch the ‘Disk Utility’ application located in your ‘Utilities’ folder, and skip to step 7. Else, proceed to the next step.
  3. Double-click on ‘Mac OS X Install DVD’ and then double click the ‘Install Mac OS X’ icon.
    2009-09-24_1819
  4. Click the ‘Utilities’ button.
    2009-09-24_1820
  5. Click the ‘Restart’ button. The Mac will now boot from the Mac OS X Snow Leopard retail disc.
    2009-09-24_1840
  6. Once you’ve selected your language, click on the ‘Utilities’ menu and select ‘Disk Utilitiy…’.
  7. Select the external USB drive in the left-hand column, ensure that you click on the parent icon which states the drive capacity, e.g. “931.5 GB”.
    2009-09-24_1847
  8. Select the ‘Partition’ tab and then under “Volume Scheme:” click on ‘Current’ and change it to ’1 Partition’.
    2009-09-24_1850
  9. Change ‘Name:’ to “OSXDVD” and ensure that ‘Format:’ is set to “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”.
    2009-09-24_1855
  10. Click ‘Options…’, select “Master Boot Record” and then click ‘OK’.
    2009-09-24_1856
  11. Click ‘Apply’ and then ‘Partition’ and give the Mac a moment to format your USB drive and create the new partition.
    2009-09-24_1857
  12. Next we need to copy Snow Leopard to the USB drive: select the ‘Restore’ tab.
    2009-09-24_1902
  13. From the left-hand pane, click and drag the ‘Mac OS X Install DVD’ icon to the ‘Source:’ field and release.
    2009-09-24_1904
  14. From the left-hand pane, click and drag the ‘OSXDVD’ icon to the ‘Destination:’ field and release.
    2009-09-24_1905
  15. Tick the ‘Erase destination’ box, then click the ‘Restore’ button and then click ‘Erase’. Allow between half an hour to 2 hours for the copy to complete.
    2009-09-24_1906
  16. Once complete, if you skipped to step 7 at step 2 in this guide, you can now skip to step 19. Else, proceed to the next step.
  17. Quit ‘Disk Utility’ and from the ‘Utilities’ menu, select ‘Startup Disk…’.
  18. Select the Mac’s normal startup disk, click ‘Restart…’ and then click the ‘Restart’ button. The Mac will now reboot from its hard disk.
    2009-09-24_1910
  19. Launch the ‘NetbookBootMaker’ application and from the select menu labelled ‘Select USB Partition:’ select the USB drive which is now titled ‘Mac OS X Install DVD’ and then click ‘Prepare Boot Drive’ (you’ll be prompted for the Mac Administrator’s username and password).
    2009-09-24_2034
  20. Once complete, you can eject the USB drive and disconnect it from the Mac.

On your Dell Mini 10v:

  1. Before we start installing we should set up the BIOS for the Dell Mini 10v: turn on the Dell Mini 10v and at the point where the Dell logo appears, press ‘F2′ for setup.
  2. You are now in the Dell Mini 10v’s BIOS. Press the right arrow key once to move to the ‘Advanced’ tab.
  3. Ensure that the options ‘USB BIOS Legacy Support’ and ‘Bluetooth’ are set to ‘Enabled’ – if not, select it using the arrow keys, hit ‘enter’, select ‘Enabled’ and hit ‘enter’ again.
  4. Ensure that the option ‘USB Wake Support’ is set to ‘Disabled’ – if not, select it using the arrow keys, hit ‘enter’, select ‘Disabled’ and hit ‘enter’ again.
  5. At this point, connect the USB drive to the Dell Mini 10v and power on the USB drive.
  6. Press the right arrow key twice to move to the ‘Boot’ tab.
  7. Press the down arrow key to select ‘USB Storage’. Then press ‘F6′ to move it above ‘Hard Drive’ so that the Dell Mini 10v will boot from the USB drive.
  8. Press ‘F10′ and then select ‘Yes’ and hit ‘enter’ to save & confirm these changes to the BIOS: the Dell Mini 10v will now boot into Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the USB drive!
  9. Once you’ve selected your language, click on the ‘Utilities’ menu and select ‘Disk Utilitiy…’.
  10. Select the Dell Mini 10v’s internal drive in the left-hand column, ensure that you click on the parent icon which states the drive capacity, e.g. “64.11 GB”.
    2009-09-24_2200
  11. Select the ‘Partition’ tab and then under “Volume Scheme:” click on ‘Current’ and change it to ’1 Partition’.
    2009-09-24_2210
  12. Ensure that ‘Format:’ is set to “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”.
    2009-09-24_2215
  13. Click ‘Options…’, select “GUID Partition Table” and then click ‘OK’.
    2009-09-24_2220
  14. Click ‘Apply’ and then ‘Partition’ and give the Dell Mini 10v a moment to format your hard disk and create the new partition.
    2009-09-24_2230
  15. Once complete, quit ‘Disk Utiltiy’.
  16. Configure your installation as you would on your normal Mac and let the installation run, and then that’s it!

Update to 10.6.2:

  1. Run the ‘NetbookInstaller’ application and click ‘Install’.
  2. Run ‘Software Update’ and update to 10.6.2.
  3. Restart your Dell Mini 10v.
  4. Run the ‘NetbookInstaller’ application again and click ‘Install’ (this fixes sound after updating to 10.6.2).

Out of the 6 or so articles on this, yours is the best and the entire process only took about 1 1/2 hours. The only thing that isn’t working is the bluetooth – can I download a driver off the apple web site for it?

10th March, 2010 @ 7:16 pm by Ed

Hi Patricia, glad you found the guide useful – apologies if this comes across patronising but are you sure your Dell Mini 10v came with Bluetooth? It’s not fitted as standard and is a separately configured option!

Just a quick thankyou – I followed the guide here step by step. Really easy to follow, and it worked perfectly! Am now typing this comment on my beautiful new Dell Mini Mac :-)

Does this work on a upgrade DVD of OS X

15th March, 2010 @ 12:11 pm by Ed

@Andy brilliant! glad it worked well for you!
@Paul I’m pretty sure it’ll need to be an actual retail version of Snow Leopard – did you but the actual retail boxed version or is it a loose disc that came with an Apple Mac?

Hello there! Good job!
Only one question: I heard that there are some troubles with wifi when running OS X on netbooks. Is there any troubles?
I have iMac at home, but sometimes I need a netbook but i have no free money to spend them for macbook >_<. And of course wifi is main thing I need from it. That's why I asking about it. (sorry for my english if it is not so good ^^)

Hi Patricia, glad you found the guide useful – apologies if this comes across patronising but are you sure your Dell Mini 10v came with Bluetooth? It’s not fitted as standard and is a separately configured option!

Hi Ed, Mine is the Mini 9 and I purchased this new with lots of upgrades, including BT, which worked with Win XP.

The other thing that I’ve discovered isn’t working is the internal mike, which I only use for Skype but I have to use a USB headset now. Both the BT and the internal mike – the system tells me the hardware doesn’t exist. Any suggestions on how to fix either one? I have a USB BT from an old laptop so that is working but the internal mike is more critical for me to have use of.

Thanks for your help.

18th March, 2010 @ 6:10 pm by Ed

Hi Patricia

Strange, I don’t have my Dell Mini 9 anymore but I definitely had Bluetooth working and I think the mic was working too although I rarely have a need for it so can’t confirm if it definitely was working – by the looks of it on this forum post on MyDellMini it seems to work for some and not for others – you may want to try one of the suggested methods on there for getting it to work.

I couldn’t find anything about Bluetooth not working on Snow Leopard hacked Mini 9′s – I can’t recall if there’s an option in the BIOS to enable Bluetooth, but I’d suggest checking there if you haven’t already. If not, what I may suggest if it’s not too much of a pain is to start from scratch and try a fresh install on a formatted hard disk.

hi! i just installed it as you have written, but my wifi still doesn’t work.
the profiler says something about a third party card, but the airport is mention as “en” driver… so that is the wrong allocation from the os, isn’t it?
my bios version is 6.
i just tasted to get into the bios, deactivate the wlan setting, bott again, restart, get into bios again and switch the wlan chip on, restart..but the wifi is still deactivated…

do u have any ideas?

thx for answering!

Hey there! Have u updated to 10.6.2? Wifi should work even without the update, but am just trying to eliminate the variables.

hi there, too! thanks for answering! i have installed 10.6.2. yesterday, too. very smooth…but in the profiler the airport finds a chip from a third party driver, but cannot activate it… -_-

Hi…love the site. I’m running a Mini 10V….getting ready to bump up the RAM and install the bluetooth. Anyway…the guys at GIZMODO have a guide which doesn’t require the DVD drive…all is done via USB. That’s how I set mine up and it worked like a charm. I though you might add that to your guide. Thanks,
Rob

25th March, 2010 @ 2:14 pm by Ed

@suit Bets to search in our forum and if you can’t find anything about it there then I’m sure if you ask someone may I have the answer

@Rob thanks for the heads up on that! I’ll update our guides section with this as I’m sure there are many people out there without access to an existing Intel-based Mac that will find that useful.

Hi Ed,
Nice guide. Could you specify the configuration of your Dell Mini 10v. there are some different configuration options available at Dell. For example will the N wifi work. It would be nice to have for comparison before I embark on the challenge to get a Dell and install Mac OSX on it.

25th March, 2010 @ 6:04 pm by Ed

@shah2 I’ve just had a snoop around the ‘net for you as I’m not sure off the top of my head, it would seem that you have a number of options: http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/dell-mini-10-hardware-upgrades/14668-dell-mini-10v-wireless-n-upgrade-card-options-how.html

My son installed MacOSX in my wife’s Mini 10v. I am trying to install Boot Camp so that she can run some Windows programs as well, but I am having difficulties. Can you help?

26th March, 2010 @ 1:48 am by Jesse

Ah, I was too late. I think the mini 10v is no longer offered by Dell. Now all they have is the mini 10 with the Atom N450 processor which I guess is incompatible. Argh.

I actually found this link from the Dell store that should work. It lists the Mini 10V for $250.

Hey Ed, I’ve had 10.6 on my 10v for a couple weeks with no problems and am going to update to 10.6.2. I’ve read a couple other places that after running software update I need to run NetbookInstaller afterward but before rebooting whereas you seem to say it’s safe to reboot then run NetbookInstaller? Thanks very much!

26th March, 2010 @ 8:17 am by mechno

I was wondering, is there was anything special you had to do if you upgraded the memory to 2Gb?
Thanks!

26th March, 2010 @ 10:01 am by HollandJim

@Kok Kee Koo – you can also do windows work on a virtualized system; runs nearly as fast and is just a click away.

Check out Sun’s VirtualBox – I installed it with XP, ran their additions and it runs perfectly!

26th March, 2010 @ 10:02 am by HollandJim

@Kok Kee Koo – whoops; forgot the most important part: it’s free!

26th March, 2010 @ 10:49 am by shah2

Thanks for the link. It doesn’t mention the Dell option Dell provides nowadays.Anyone have a quess?
1.802.11g (1397) MiniCard [Included]
2.802.11g/n (1510) Mini Card [$25.00]
Which configured wifi do you people have? and works with MacOSX
Does the version of the BIOS have any impact?
Last but not least. How is the overall performance? I know not to expect high performance for example using photoshop. but casual browsing and iworks, remote sessions, do they work ok? And is a upgrade to 2GB RAM an option? Did see some info about it being able to upgrade to max 2gb.
Thanks in advance.

Hi.
Thanks for this guide. I’ve got my little Dell working perfectly, already to be handed over as a birthday present in a couple of days.
Only problem…. the hard drive isn’t showing on the desktop, only in the side window in the finder.

any idea how to fix this?

26th March, 2010 @ 2:42 pm by Chris

Sorry to mention this here but I am unable to create a new topic on the Dell part of the forum – The Dell Mini 10 (not 10v) actually works with Snow Leopard!!!

The graphics driver issue was solved a few months ago. I have a working Dell Mini 10 running Snow Leopard (no sleep but working Wifi, sound etc) using the Netbook installer and Netbook Boot Maker project from:
http://code.google.com/p/netbook-installer/

Someone needs to update the compatibility chart…

Cheers.

28th March, 2010 @ 4:59 pm by goestoeleven

I’ve got my Mini10V with 80211n and bluetooh working just great with 10.6.2….

with the exception of the fact that I can never get it to come out of sleep. If I close the lid or choose sleep from the menu, I’m forced to hard power off and restart.

Any suggestions?

28th March, 2010 @ 11:02 pm by Gordon Werner

The following step should be added between Steps 1 and 2 on the Dell Mini 10v section above.

“Resetting the BIOS to defaults will apparently unset the hidden bit that the Dell utility flips when you disable wireless.”

Doing this will make WiFi work if you cannot use wifi after following all of these instructions.

NOTE: You can do this anytime … even after installing OSX … just hist F2 when the 10v reboots.

28th March, 2010 @ 11:56 pm by thomas bondurant

Thank you for your advice. Your site seems to be the best for novices. Other sites’ directions are like magic trick instructions (something is missing to the untrained eye!).

I thought this would be a cheap way to switch to Mac; something I have been apprehensive about but would like to do.

I don’t have a Mac or know anyone with a Mac. I recently bought a Dell 10v; I thought I could copy a retail OSX onto a hard drive and then usb it over to the Dell. Is this possible to do without a Mac? Should I buy the retail Snow Leopard? If not, how can I do this and what files should I find/download?

Many thanks, T

@goestoeleven: In your bios, disable legacy USB support. That should fix the sleep issue.

@thomas bondurant: Buy the OS X Snow Leopard retail disk. You can find methods to do the installation without a Mac by using either a Linux or Windows computer.

30th March, 2010 @ 12:49 pm by Ed

@TOK I believe the guide will work with 10.5.

@Barf It is safe to reboot and then run NetbookInstaller.

@Ian Probably just need to enable hard drives appearing on the desktop which is a Preferences thing in Finder off the top of my head! I think by default it’s set to ‘off’ in Snow Leopard.

@Chris Thanks for the info, I’ll look into this and update the chart accordingly, cheers! That’s good news!

@Gordon Thanks a lot for this info, I’ll update the guide accordingly!

@thomas Please do buy Snow Leopard retail disc and support Apple. I’ll look into creating a guide for those of you without access to an existing Mac.

Anyone try this with os x 10.6.3 ? any issues anything that should be done differently ?

30th March, 2010 @ 9:09 pm by Crude

@ Mariner: Download the new Netbookinstaller 0.8.4pre (http://netbook-installer.googlecode.com/files/NetbookInstaller%200.8.4pre.app.zip) and install it on your 10.6.0-10.6.2. Reboot your Mini 10v. Install the upgrade to 10.6.3. After the reboot Netbookinstaller will run automatically and then EVERYTHING JUST WORKS! Fantastic work my merklort and the gang!

30th March, 2010 @ 10:11 pm by mariner

Thanks Crude, just a quick clarification, I have not yet installed anything on the mini 10v. I just ordered it from dell, what should I do differently from the install instructions above? nothing other than substitute the latest netbook installer? my copy of os x retail is 10.5.6, thanks for the help!

Jean-Francois- What version of netbook maker and netbook installer did you use? Also what version of the mac os x retail did you use? My Dell should be showing up any day now and I’m not sure how to proceed?

Today I bought the retail version of Snow Leopard. Still don’t know how to install it on my 10v. I don’t have a Mac. I have an external hard drive, if that helps.

If anyone knows how to install SnowLeop w/o a mac, Please Help!

On another note, I read today that Apple Comp. (aapl) is 3rd on market capitalization behind Exxon, Microsoft…so they are not necessarily hurting. In fact I bet their profit margins are larger than most companies because they are creating a insular business model. I had the chance to buy aapl at $35 some years ago, but didn’t because I didn’t understand IPODS (why do people have to be f-ing! entertained whenever/wherever they are? Seriously, I love music but when I’m trying to move my bowels I don’t need a soundtrack. Furthermore, interacting with people in public is a wonderful and meaningful part of life)

Well, I guess I was wrong because AAPL is at $240 today.

Hi, I went to the NetBootMaker link and DL’d this version: NetbookBootMaker 0.8.4 RC1.app.zip. Whn I unzip and double click the app, it immediately crashes. Should one use another, older file?

Thanks!

Well I answered my own Q: yes, I DL’d NetbookBootMaker 0.8.4 RC1.app.zip, unzipped and it worked perfectly. Now am running NetbookInstaller ( NetbookInstaller 0.8.4 RC1.app.zip ) and going to attempt upgrade to 10.6.3. Stay tuned…

I just got a mini 10v with OS X 10.6.3 on it. I did not install myself but I know it was done with Netbookinstaller 0.8.3. Everything works great – except for the Bluetooth headset that I use for Skype. Sometimes it works, most of the times it does not work. It shows always as “Paired” but most of the times as not connected. Even when it is connected it almost always does not get recognized by Skype. I downloaded Netbookinstaller 0.84 RC1 and did a “Fix Bluetooth” run – still does not work.
Is this a 10.6.3 thing that might be getting fixed with a newer version of Netbookinstaller? Or could it be that Bluetooth will never work correctly on this machine? Should I run Netbookinstaller 0.84 RC1 again and let the mini 10v extension be installed again?
Would be great if I could get some enlightening comments here. Thanks.

3rd April, 2010 @ 1:15 am by desertman

… what I forgot to say is that my mini 10v has an internal Bluetooth card and it works just fine on the Windows 7 part. Both the Bluetooth card and the headset are listed correctly in the System Profiler.

Hello. I am very happy to finally find a guide to convert a netbook into a mac netbook.

I am thinking of getting an iPad, but looks like a mac netbook is a better choice for now.

Can I install OS 10.6.3 on the new dell inspiron mini 10, with atom N450. Would I also be able to run Windows on the netbook? Either installed through BootCamp or VMWare.

Thank you in advance.

Hey guys, i have a quick question before i install OS X, in the bios you disable the‘USB Wake Support’ before installation, but i read in another article that you should enable it. What should i do? Does it affect the sleep function? Thanks

6th April, 2010 @ 1:31 pm by Dirkus

@Gordon Werner: Thanks! You’re right, that should be added to the directions. I loaded BIOS defaults and got my wireless back. Works like a charm!

Thanks to InsanelyMac for the site and the walkthrough, and big props to Meklort for the Netbook Installer and Netbook BootMaker tools!

Hi,

Nice guide, but alike others, I have no access to a mac to prepare the flash drive…

Are thier any tools for windows?

Thanks

Jack

12th April, 2010 @ 1:05 pm by Ed

@Jack I will update the guide to cater for users without access to an existing Mac, it is possible!

@Sim What are the other drives that are appearing – 4 is a lot, make sure any other USB devices are disconnected so it’s just your netbook and the USB hard disk attached!

12th April, 2010 @ 1:06 pm by Ed

@Rita THe guide was written based on version 0.8.3 but the latest version which is 0.8.4a should also work too!

@Ryan I believe it should be set to ‘Disabled’ as it will affect sleep

So what’s the performance like? Thinking about installing the mac os on gf’s netbook, but i don’t want to do it if it is super slow. Let me know what you guys are getting.

19th April, 2010 @ 10:35 pm by sjwheat

I’m very satisfied with the performance. I use it for web browsing, mail, itunes and regular work.

I wouldn’t suggest video editing are huge PhotoShop work, but for everything else it’s more than I ever expected on speed.

I have MacBook Pro, MacBook and MacPro to compare against. It’s not an iPad experience nor should it be. It’s a small MacBook with very good speed.

I just got my dell mini 10v. I followed these instructions to install 10.6 from the Install CD, I made my usb stick with ‘NetbookInstaller’ 0.8.4 RC1 . Then after I booted I re ran ‘NetbookInstaller’ 0.8.4 RC1, I then downloaded the 10.6.3 combo update, and ran that to update my system to 10.6.3 ( NOTE I did not upgrade to 10.6.2). Then when I rebooted my machine, ‘NetbookInstaller’ ran on boot, I left it alone and the machine rebooted. I was now at 10.6.3. I then rans software updates to update java, safari, itunes and a few others, that went fine. I am at Bios A06

I have a 2 GB stick ordered, and it sucks they way it has to be installed, but It runs.. AWESOME….. Repeat AWESOME with 1 GB.

observations:

I could not wake form sleep, so I went into the bios and turned off usb legacy support. The machine will wake from sleep now if the the machine was put to sleep with the lid open, hitting the power button. I was not sure if hitting the power button would wake it before I disabled USB legacy support in bios. There is also a USB wake option that is disabled in bios. I wonder if changing this would allow machine to wake by hitting any button or mouse. Also, if I close the lid the machine goes to sleep (at least I assume it is sleep) the power light pulses) and when I open the lid, it wakes up. I check the console logs and it says sleeping and waking. but I am curios, because it WAKES fast. the screen come on almost immediatly, and I log in, then it re aquires network, so I assuem it was really asleep. I left it asleep all day and woke it up and battery was down by 6%, so I guess it is sleeping. I have a 6 cell battery,

also
When I boot I got the hiberate meaasge.. I re ran ‘NetbookInstaller’, and JUST selected “toggle hibernation” which was set to enable. I did not get the message on boot anymore and it boots faster.

To get the icon of my hard drive on the desktop, I just went to finder preference’s and chose that option. I also could not change the icon of my hard drive (the Netbook installer icon makes a great one). I noticed even though I was an admin account I did not have write/ privileges outside my home directory. So I enabled root, logged in as root user and I could change the Hard drive Icon. I have not run disk permissions yet, and that might fix the issue.

I Assume I can run ‘NetbookInstaller’ and just select certain options, or do I have to have all my options selected everytime I run it????

what are the keyboard mappings? I searched and was told the windows key is the cmd key, but it s not on the dell mini 10 the alt key is the mac cmd key. What does the windows key map to.

NetBookBootMaker 0.8.4 RC is quitting unexpectedly. I tried this on a MacBook with 10.5.8 OS.Anybody have a fix? I can’t go on with my install if I can’t get past this step.

25th April, 2010 @ 7:55 am by newbie

I too want to change icons on my 10V but and unable to do so using copy/paste via the “get info” screen. Bob, how did you “enable root” and log in asa root user?

25th April, 2010 @ 11:48 pm by Bob

Here’s how to enable root in Snow Leopard:

1. Open Directory Utility in its new home, which is /System/Library/CoreServices.
2. Unlock the application by clicking the padlock icon and entering your Administrator login.
3. Select Edit » Enable Root User.
4. Choose Edit » Change Root Password, and choose a password for the root user.

*** found these instructions at
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090909081659323

Then log out and then get to login screen and typre “root” as the user and your root password.

I was able to get NetBookBootMaker 0.8.4 RC1 to run on a friend’s. Now when I try to boot up on the USB drive, I get a screen with 4 hard drives on it. 1 has the name of my USB thumb drive on it and another one has the name of the HD in the mini 10V. 2 have no names. I hit enter to select the thumb drive. I get an Apple screen and a clock spinning but it doesn’t go past that. My retail SL disk is 10.6.3. I have BIOS A06. Any thoughts on what is going on?

28th April, 2010 @ 3:51 am by mariner

just discovered that my sound does not work. any tips for a fix?

30th April, 2010 @ 4:53 pm by dboruta

Was able to get NetbookBootmaker 0.8.4RC1 to install SL 10.6.3 retail disk with ease. Copy OSX Install Disk to 8GB USB using Disk Utility (do not start up SL Install Disk), then after imaging is complete run NetbookBootmaker 0.8/4RC1 on a Mac that already has SL installed on it. After successful finish of the bootmaker, eject USB, set up BIOS on Mini10v, then boot from USB. Go through installation process, then at end of installation process go back into OSX Installer on the USB and (re-)install NetbookInstaller 0.8.4RC1 from the Utilities menu. Quit out of the installer and select “Restart”. On restart, select the hard disk (I just had mine named “Untitled 1″) and you’re good to go! Just remember the next time you boot up the computer you go into the BIOS menu and turn off Legacy USB Support, otherwise you might run into problems with hibernation.

I installed using the 10.6.3 retail disc too, and everything turned out perfect. But, after installing iLife ’09 and restarting, sound input/output devices turned up missing. I ran the NetbookInstaller after the fact hoping to fix this, but no dice. Not sure if the problem is related to iLife or or just mysterious Mini 10v gremlins.

Is there a way to fix this, or should I just install using a 10.6 base installer, then update from there?

3rd May, 2010 @ 6:48 pm by George

Great guide, easy install.
One problem — having trouble upgrading to 10.3 from my 10.0 install.

Loaded Netbook Installer (0.8.4 RC1) onto my Mini, ran it, and couldn’t reboot.

Reinstalled OS and tried Software Update without running Netbook Installer and couldn’t reboot.

In both cases I get as far as the home screen, spinning beach ball in the upper left corner, but no menu bar.

Any ideas on how to get the update to work?

Thx.

I am thoroughly pleased with my mini 10v running OSX 10.6.3. I recently installed 2GB of RAM, and all works generally as it should. Thank you for the very helpful guide.

I have experienced two minor issues (at least one of which is discussed in the posts above), and solved them in reasonably short order. The first is the hibernation issue, the second is a webcam issue (but only with iChat).

1) I was experiencing the typically reported hibernation issue — where I open the lid after a sleep and the drive makes noise, but the screen does not light up. I went with the terminal route typing the following:

$ sudo pmset lidwake 0

This means that I now have to hit the power button once to wake the mini from hibernation, but it seems to solve the hibernation issues in all but one case. If the mini has been put to sleep and then I unplug a usb device (usb mouse, for example), the typical black screen issue continues. If I unplug the usb device before putting the mini to sleep, no problems seem to occur.

2) I had one issue with the webcam being recognized by Photo Booth and Skype, but not by iChat. Again, I went the terminal route and all seems well in the world of iChat.

$ defaults write com.apple.iChat newbwdup 300000

If these solutions work for you, great. I guarantee nothing.

Thanks again for the great guide, and the posts.

Warning To Noobs RE: 10.6.3.
Do not download the 10.6.3 combo update.
Your OS won’t load because 10.6.3 doesn’t support the mini 10v chipset.
10.6.2 is the latest version that works with the 10v.

7th May, 2010 @ 11:04 pm by dboruta

Harpy – How did you install iLife? Through a disk image onto USB, or through a download from Apple? Installing from disk image onto USB might be the better route, since it worked for installing Office 2004 for me.

George – you’re going to need to bite the bullet and buy a 10.6.3 Retail Install DVD and image it and install it the way I described earlier if you want to run 10.6.3. Unless you have 10.6.2 install disk or update, in which case I’d say just use that until someone finds a way to get around it with NBI Chameleon.

10th May, 2010 @ 2:19 am by Bob

John,

Sounds like you need to talk to your work mac support to get admin access, if you have mac heads , they may be cool with what you are doing. Other than that you can boot off of a install cd and reset passwords, but I assume your work IT will not be happy with that, you need to find a mac with an admin account you can access.

HI People! Followed this install guide using 10.6.3 Retail Mc573z/a on a dell mini 1012. I managed to complete the install and all seems well however it will only boot with the thumbdrive inserted. I have run NetbookInstaller 0-1.8.4 RC1.app yet this has no effect. I get the message unable to patch 64 bit kernel. please use arch=i386 or use a 10.6.2 or newer kernel then the system restarts. Any advice appreciated :)

@james 6/23/10

Tonight I successfully installed retail 10.6.3 on the Mini 10v. When you get hte install going, the progress bar will tell you that it only take 30-35 minutes, its more like 3X. So, if it tells you only 10 more minutes, its really 30 minutes.

I have the same specs on my netbook. Did you use netbookmaker 0.8.4RC1 to prep the USB key? Also, when using Disk Utility to create the USB, did you select Master Boot Record?

Hey everyone,
I followed the guide above with a 10v and 10.6.3, netbook maker 8.4 rc1. When I got to the point of using disk utility on the new netbook, I couldn’t see the netbook’s hard drive. Any advice? Thanks,

Hi,

Hoping someone can help me.

I’m running OS X (10.6) on the Mini 10v. My battery died (brand new) and now will not charge at all. I receive a message when booting up that says “Warning: The battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery. Strike the F1 key to continue.”

Any assistance with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

before I do this process, i just wanted to know… will I be able to update to the latest 10.6.4 software?

22nd August, 2010 @ 4:59 am by Lance Taylor

I had the same battery issue.

““Warning: The battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery. Strike the F1 key to continue.” ”

I called and they sent me a replacement as my 10V was still on warranty.

I am very keen to do this, and have done lots of research, however the model I am about to buy is a Dell Mini 1011v, which sounds subtly different to Dell Mini 10v (1011).

Can anybody tell me if I’m likely to run into any problems?

Many thanks

Hello mate!
Perfect and thanks for making the easy to follow guide (Gixmodo is good, but this is easier to follow).
I snagged three off ebay – greedy I know – first one done, no problems at all.
I used an Externa USB HD.
An observation – it had a strange start up, which I fixed by going back into BIOS and moved Hard Drive to the top of the boot list, probably obvious for you (ex?)PC’ers – but for a Macoholic – Bios is a strange concept!
(oh yes I have a house full of Macs)
As to why Apple don’t make something like this is beyond me – they are losing a lot of potential business!

10th September, 2010 @ 9:50 am by Graham

I had a question also,

I purchased a new copy of 10.6 for this – I already had 10.6.3 – so I got an old copy off ebay (10.6.0).
Snow Leopard is now at 10.6.4, should I or should I not update?
I don’t believe you can pick an update, however as I mentioned I do also have a full version of 10.6.3 on DVD.
What to do?
Many thanks if you have time to throw an answer my way!

I’ve been trying to install SL on my Dell inspiron mini 1012 with N450 atom processor.
I’ve managed to install SL using NMB 0.8.4 RC1 but whole booting up, it gives “unable to patch 64-bit kernel….” , then the spinning wheel appears for less than a minute then “panic screen”..
Please advice me if there’s a solution to this problem.
I also tried replacing the mach_kernel with the one from this site:

with no success…

2)And can I attach a larger monitor to the Dell Mini 10v?

I have a problem with my Dell Mini 10V (Inspiron 1011, GMA950 graphics, SL MacOS X 10.6.3) and the external vga-connection. It is not possible to connect a external monitor or beamer.

Thanks so much for the walk through! Works like a charm. Sleep, camera, speakers, mic, track pad all function fully straight away. I used the new 10.6.3 disc with my 1011 and had no issues at all.

I would like to dual boot the 1011, windows 7 and OS X. I noticed that something called ‘Chameleon boot loader’ is installed by netbook installer. does anyone know how to use it?

2nd November, 2010 @ 12:42 pm by Adrian

Just tried installing osx on my mini 1011. I followed the instructions above but used an SD card instead of a USB drive. First of all, will that make a difference?
I get to the chameleon boot screen where you have to select a drive to install osx. I select a drive and it then comes up with the message “bootmgr is missing, press ctrl alt del to restart”

Do I need to partition my drive prior to installing osx? It doesn’t mention that above.

Any ideas?

Just bought a 10v and was running 10.6.2 easily. Only issue was sleep/hibernate which I mention in my blog post on my site. Fantastic machine even with the stock 1gb of RAM. Using the side of the trackpad for scrolling worked much better for me than 2 finger scrolling. I’ve also covered most of the power light with tape as it’s soooo bright it’s annoying!

I’m a bit unsure as to whether I can now just run Software Update and go to 10.6.4 though.

Thanks again for this brilliant guide, best I found on the web :)

9th November, 2010 @ 3:53 pm by Tim

To follow my comment above, I’ve just upgraded a second 10v for a friend and had some issues because it came with a BIOS password! Eventually we cracked it (it was just Q believe it or not) and after that is was plain sailing again. 10.6.2 failed twice then installed properly but I had that on mine; since then it’s fine and he’s really pleased with it.

The retail version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard is 10.6.3…if your saying to buy the retail disc which is 10.6.3, how are we installing 10.6.2 if the retail disc is 10.6.2?

20th November, 2010 @ 8:13 pm by Pobs

I am trying to do this right now, but the problem I have is that I have windows 7 installed, and I don’t want to delete it, but want to have both W7 and OSX. When I get to the bit where I load OSX from the USB key, I cannot change the partition I had created in windows to a GUID Partition or whatever, the instructions are for those who are happy to delete entire hard drive. Any way I can change the partition I have created on the dell for osx to be compatible with this procedure?

25th November, 2010 @ 5:12 pm by Tim

@ Steven Berger, the early SL disks were 10.6.0 so there are a lot of them around. People like me who had one installed that, then 10.6.2 updater. I assume you can use the 10.6.3 disk with newer versions of the installer apps? Not 100% sure.

Everything works perfectly running 10.6.5, except the webcam is way to bright/washed out. does anyone know a way to adjust the gama of the webcam. it is hardly usable the way it is. thanks!

29th November, 2010 @ 4:40 pm by Tim

At the weekend I stripped the Dell down and fitted 2gb which took about half an hour. Also installed 10.6.4 and Safari 5.0.3 without any issues at all. Running perfectly.

29th November, 2010 @ 9:12 pm by jc

We have a mini 10v running OS X 10.6.4, but since installing 10.6.0 the speakers are not working (the headphone jack however is working fine). I also have seen photos (like above) where the entire desktop fits on the monitor, but mine extends below the visible part of the screen making the menu bar across the bottom useless.
I cannot find fixes for either of these anywhere, does anyone else have experience fixing these?
I wanted to hack my HP mini as well, but these experiences are making me gun shy…
Thanks!

2nd December, 2010 @ 10:20 pm by Josh

@jc – you have to run this version of netbook installer:
http://www.meklort.com/?p=262

@Tim – I upgraded my ram to 2gb as well, and I actually laughed at one point because my entire room was covered in parts. You have to take every damn piece apart to upgrade the ram…lol. you’d think it would be easier to change then the stupid wifi card which has a single screw access slot, but nope, it is insane. fortunately everything went back together smoothly! :-)

I wanted to update and warn others. I had been using the NetbookInstaller 0.8.5pre when I ended up with MacOS network errors, no WiFi, no ethernet. Using only 0.8.4 worked. Again, this was on a Dell Mini 10v.

7th December, 2010 @ 12:42 am by jc

Hey Josh, thanks, but I did run that one already and it didn’t fix my issues. I may just try to reinstall from scratch. I would like to make it dual boot to XP anyway.

Having a problem getting this to work. After preparing the drive and following the steps above, I’m booting the Mini 10v (Insp 1011, Bios A06, Atom N270)from the newly prepared hard drive. I get the small cursor in the top corner of the screen that “spins” and after some time (15 seconds or so) it just stops and will go no further. My Snow Leopard says just version 10.6 so I assume 10.6.0 (it was an early one). Was wondering if I need 10.6.3 to work with the newer A06 Bios?

25th December, 2010 @ 2:56 pm by Ben

Can you do this with an A07 Bios? I can’t seem to downgrade it so I was wondering if it worked with straight-up hackintoshing with this guide.

Hi. I bought a mini 10v off craigslist already hackintoshed about a week ago. Everything worked perfectly, but today I decided to update iTunes, like a fool apparently. When it restarted it got stuck on the white screen with the apple, and a swirly loading circle. Does anybody know what I can do here? Is there a way to fix this without starting over? Thanks.

3rd February, 2011 @ 5:07 am by world28

I upgraded from 10.6.3 to 10.6.5 no problem, and next to 10.6.6 no problem again. I did install netbootinstall (last version necessary, no parameters changed), clean the system about file rights, update the system for the apple menu, restart, install netboot again (no change) . That’s folks !!! Perfect. Including App Store.

As good as the machine is, I will be selling mine as there are too many niggling issues that are driving me nuts.

Trackpad is truly terrible – oversensitive and too small to use easily.

Lack of height on screen is a pain.

Battery life is terrible.

Viewing angle of screen is poor.

I’ve really tried but this baby will go and I’ll get an iPad instead.

Is it possible to just buy an external cd-rom drive and install it that way? Wouldn’t that eliminate the steps that require the use of running bootmaker?

25th March, 2011 @ 2:25 pm by BC Musik

It works wonderfully and very fast, about 1 hour and 15 minutes hora y 15 minutos

1st April, 2011 @ 11:40 pm by JM

@Ragz I don’t think so because the installation image on the thumb drive is already patched and therefore different from the contents of the vanilla installation DVD.

@Tim I agree that the trackpad is dreadful but I’ve sort have got use to it and you can always use a regular mouse or even a genuine Apple Mighty Mouse (which I also find dreadfully bad – it must be the way i hold it but I always seem to right click when trying to left click). The lack of screen height can be a problem too, but I’ve found it much better if I hide the Dock and let windows use the full height of the screen. I disagree that the viewing angle is poor, though. Regarding battery life, I got a high capacity battery with my 10v. At first I was annoyed because it’s bulky and sticks out from the bottom of the computer but on a full charge I get 6 to 7 hours of use, which is much better than the 2 hours I get from my genuine MacBook Pro (17-inch, pre LED backlight).

1st April, 2011 @ 11:44 pm by JM

@Joaquin Menchaca Use DiskUtility after booting from the thumb drive to repartition the drive to a single partition.

2nd April, 2011 @ 7:23 am by JP

Hi

I just brought a dell mini 10 1018, it installs fine but when i reboot it wont boot up. If I have the thumb drive in and boot then select the drive to boot from it works fine. it says something like

Unable to patch 64bit kernel. Please use arch=i386 to use a 10.6.2 or newer kernel.

So if I have my thumb drive plugged in and boot off that then select the drive it boots fine into OSx.

Also the sound and wifi don’t work.

15th August, 2011 @ 1:44 pm by Mark

Got a strange issue. Using 0.8.5pre to load 10.6. From the USB stick on boot (before install), I have wifi access, ethernet, all good. However, after the install is done, and Mac OS boots, no network interfaces of any kind are detectable. Only Bluetooth shows up as any kind of communication. BIOS is A06, and all settings match requirements for installation. Can’t figure out where I’m getting off track.

Update-Switched to 0.8.4RC1 NetBookInstaller, and network issue solved.

15th August, 2011 @ 6:06 pm by Mark

Everytime 0.8.5 comes into play, all networking gets turned off and is no longer configurable. Mini 10v 1011. Bouncing around between 0.8.4 and 0.8.5. Ought to tear up the install.

Anyone else had the networking issue? Other than that, it is awesome.

Aargh! My 10v was working great for almost a year – sound, wi-fi, networking, onboard camera, trackpad – all of it… running 10.6.5. Until I updated to 10.6.8 using autoupdate (accidentally) along with iTunes. Now the boot process cycles to the apple then black screen and cycles the boot process all over again… and again, and again. So now my mini is broken… :(

Thank you all for this wonderful resource. I have now put 10.6.3 onto 4 mini 9s and 2 10v -1011s. The guide is superb. It has been really rewarding and worthwhile. The only thing I cant get to work is the vga out. But I use a usb to vga converter box for that. The Dell 9s and 10v-1011s are great machines. Upgrading the Ram on the 10v 1011 is a pain. I just cut a whole on the bottom of mine to access the ram slot. (dont do this at home) And covered it up after with the base from an old external hdd box*. The take apart of the 10v to get to the ram is very fiddly. Anyway, thanks again for an excellent guide. Now, onto an Alienware…. (*I’m in Australia, so cutting holes in stuff is second nature down here. The whole place is a hole in the ground.)

@Zachary sounds like you’re not using a retail disc but a SL disc that came with another Mac? That won’t work unfortunately, either on a netbook or even another Mac. You need the retail SL disc – cop it from Amazon, it’s only 43 bucks now!

mini 10v- bios A00, installed from disc os 10.6.3. Everything working except bluetooth.

22nd December, 2011 @ 12:31 am by showmansh

started with a dell 10v with windows xp. I did hacintosh with install disc 10.6.3, using NBI 0.8.5pre & NMB 0.8.4RC1. It worked fine but there was no startup disc visible in the prefs/pane. I installed again and upgraded to 10.6.7 and a startup disc appeared. I borked it trying to get mirroring to work so had to re install. WHY did the system reboot on the 10v from the usb with all files intact and at 6.7??? why was it all not erased and back to 6.3??? should there be a startup chime like a real apple? On my MBPro 10.5.8 NBM wouldn’t run, why??? I had to use a MBook on 10.6.7. The mirror windows app doesn’t work for me and I think It maybe due to not being able to completely erase the 10v HD for a fresh install from the usb. any suggestions? thanks

I bought a mini 10v a couple of years ago for this purpose, but the directions were a little daunting. I just replaced the hard drive a figured I should just go for it. These directions are so easy to follow that it made the process a pleasure. I love my mini-mac! Everything works perfectly, nearly better than my 2006 macbook. Thanks so much for the help.

Hi, Maybe my ram is just not compatible, yet i couldn’t find any help on the net.
Is the kta-mb667k2/4g kit of 2 compatible with the mini 1011?
I have installed it and it only detects 1GB 533 Mhz. I’m hoping I did something wrong with the install. :)
Thank for your help!

I have been browsing online more than 2 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours.

It is pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all site owners
and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be a lot
more useful than ever before.

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 and have followed your directions exactly, and every part of the preparation went off exactly as you described until I got to the actual OSX install onto the hard drive of the Dell machine, I get a Apple Error warning saying “MAC OS X can’t be installed on this computer” I’ve gone over everything and the only thing that I see that could be an issue is the BIOS, my computer has A07, is this the issue?

Does this method allow you to install and run 10.6.8 with everything working? Looking to buy and install SL on a Dell 10v to use for live sound playing my guitar through it. Has anyone ever done a test on the latency using a Hackintosh? GREAT guide by the way!! I’ve done 3 Hackintoshes so far (Dell XPS M1530 10.8.2, eeepc 900a 10.5.8 eeepc 900hd 10.5.7) and this is by far the best guide!! Thanks!

I followed these instructions and they worked to a tee. Then several months later, my battery died. I have a new battery now but upon power up I first see the Dell splash screen, then the Mac apple, fine – but then it cycles between the two. I did not (at least consciously) update the Mac OS in the interim (and how could I if it was not even powered?). Help?

An outstanding share! I’ve just forwarded this onto a friend who

due to the fact that I found it for him… lol.
So allow me to reword this…. Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanx for spending some time to discuss this issue here

Unquestionably believe that which you said. Your favorite justification seemed to be on the net the easiest thing to be aware of.
I say to you, I certainly get annoyed while people think about worries that they just
do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing
without having side effect , people can take a signal.

Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
