  3. Question: How do you negotiate payment as a freelancer?

  5. Question: What do you put in the subject line in an email to an editor?

  6. Justin: Often when you pitch a story, it doesn't turn out how you imagined it

  7. Amanda: I also want a writer who responds well to the feedback I give

  8. Amanda: "Writing is very personal, and I try to remember that"

  9. Question: What happens to a story after someone pitches it and it doesn't come out how you wanted?

  10. Amanda: "Voice is the hardest thing to teach or edit"

  11. Justin: Some publications have a "house voice" that you just have to fit your tone to

  12. Question: How do you adjust your tone to fit all the magazines you're pitching to?

  13. Justin: "I'm not going to read to ending if I really don't like the beginning"

  14. Question: How important are ledes?

  15. Amanda: When writers have something they're really interested in, I know I can trust them to take on that topic

  16. Justin: If that's what you really want to write about, you should do it

  17. Question: As a writer, is it better to find your niche early, or should you try to be an everyman?

  18. Amanda: We make the interns do a lot of fact checking; it makes you re-report the story in a lot of ways

  19. Question: How do you help prepare interns for their future careers?
