Description

Batista is a small lake in the Dahlgren River drainage of the Lac La Croix basin, 22½ miles ESE of Crane Lake, and 23¼ miles NNW of Ely. Just over ½ mile long, Batista is situated on Batista Creek, a bit less than ½ upstream, and to the east, of its confluence with the Dahlgren River. Batista Creek originates in the soggy uplands, nearly a mile to the northeast of the lake, making its way through half a dozen small ponds before taking a fairly abrupt, 35' drop into the northeast end of Batista.

The forest along the north shore ofBatista last saw a major fire in the same year Atlanta did (1864). The narrow band of forest on the southern shore is older, having not seen a major, stand replacing burn since the mid-18th Century. This area was not hit in the big, Independence Day windstorms of 1999, which wreaked such havoc farther to the east.

Campsites

Batista supports one established campsite, along its northern shore.

Planning Considerations

Batista is on a deadend spur off the Stuart/Dahlgren route, which runs northward down the Stuart and Dahlgren Rivers, from the Echo Trail to the Boulder River just upstream from Boulder Bay of Lac La Croix, passing through Stuart Lake on the way. While no portages are shown on Batista Creek, one should be prepared for liftovers in the boggy way upstream from the Dahlgren.

Wildlife

The soggy banks of the Dahlgren and lower Batista Creek should be good for moose. (and sqvirrel?)
