Summary

Darab Jehangir Jussawalla obtained his FRCS degree from Edinburgh, UK. His area of specialization was oncology (surgical and medical). He was the Director, Tata Memorial Centre (Tata Memorial Hospital & Cancer Research Institute), Mumbai; Chief Surgeon, Tata Memorial Hospital; Professor of Oncology, University of Bombay; Director, Lady Ratan Tata Medical Research Centre; and Head, Department of Oncology, Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai.

Academic and Research Achievements: Jussawalla conducted research on various aspects of cancer rehabilitation at the first Cancer Rehabilitation Centre he established – the first centre in India at Mumbai and the largest in Asia. He conducted research in epidemiology of cancer at the first Population-based Cancer Registry he established in India at Mumbai. He has authored Handbook of Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer (1980);

Other Contributions: Jusswalla established the first cytology laboratory in India at Tata Memorial Hospital and also the first chemotherapy services there. He was an adviser to many Cancer Hospitals in India. He was a Member of WHO Expert Committee on Cancer and several national and international bodies. Jussawalla was the corresponding Fellow of Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and Member of Association of Surgeons of India and Indian Cancer Society (Hony Founder Secretary & Managing Trustee). He also served as Editor-in-Chief of Indian J Cancer.

Awards and Honours: Jussawalla was the recipient of Dr Munsiff Oration Award of KEM Hospital, Bombay (1968); Raja Ravi Shersingh of Kalsia Memorial Award of ICMR (1971); Dr Ernest Borges Oration Award of Tata Memorial Hospital (1974); Dr Bhansali Oration Award of Bombay Medical Union (1975); Dr BC Roy Memorial Oration Award of Chittaranjan National Cancer Research Centre (1976); Dr NC Joshi Memorial Oration Award of Delhi Medical Association (1977); Mrs Vimla Shah Oration Award of BHU (1979); Sandoz Oration Award of National Academy of Medical Sciences, India (1983); Dhanwantari Foundation Award (1980-81) and Padma Bhushan by Government of India. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (London), the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India), the American College of Surgeons, and the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
