TR Anantharaman was awarded the DSc (1991) from Oxford University. His areas of specialization were physical metallurgy and materials. He was Director, Institute of Technology and Rector, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi; Director, Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala; and CSIR Emeritus Scientist, National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. He was INSA Senior Scientist during (1996-2000).

Academic and Research Achievements: Professor Anantharaman was deeply interested in the subject of structure and Phase Transformations and had authored over 100 research papers on all aspects of the subject, in a variety of metallic systems. He had been engaged in extensive research on rapidly cooled alloys, amorphous alloys and metallic glasses - a fascinating field of growing scientific importance and technological application. As Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow, he organized a co-ordinated programme of research on amorphous alloys and metallic glasses, with the participation of various laboratories in the country. Professor Anantharaman was a very inspiring teacher, and a highly creative and dynamic research leader and organizer; and he had been responsible for establishing at the Banaras Hindu University the Centre for Materials Science – both of which have grown into centers of excellence, with international reputation. He co-authored the book, Rapidly Solidified Metals.

Other Contributions: Anantharaman served on the Editorial Boards of Metallography and International Journal of Rapid Solidification and also edited Metallic Glasses. He served INSA as Council Member (1979-81).

Awards and Honours: Anantharaman was a recipient of Kamani Gold Medal (1960), National Metallurgist's Day Award from Ministry of Steel & Mines (1964), SS Bhatnagar Prize of CSIR (1967), FICCI Award (1972), Homi J Bhabha Award of UGC & Hari Om Trust (1974), Vasvik Award (1973), SS Bhatnagar Medal of INSA (1982), Tata Gold Metal of Indian Institute of Metals (1983), INSA Prize for Materials Science (1987); Andrew Clifton Sorby Award of International Metallographic Society (1989), and Distinguished Scientist Award, Materials Research Society of India (1992). He was conferred on several lectureships such as Professor NP Gandhi Memorial Lecture and Professor D Swarup Memorial Lecture of Indian Institute of Metals; Professor V Ramakrishna Memorial Lecture of IIT, Delhi; Shri Nidhu Bhushan Memorial Lecture and Sir M Visvesvarayya Memorial Lecture of Institution of Engineers, India; and Professor Baradananda Chatterjee Memorial Lecture of Bengal Engineering College. He was a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore; the Indian National Academy of Engineering; the Institute of Material (London) and the American Society of Metals.
