AT THE INN AND BEYOND
While there is much to do on Hatteras Island, we counsel guests that the less of an agenda you start with, the more enjoyable your visit will be. Time moves differently here. "Let's wander and explore" is often the best way to enjoy our island and culture.
The Inn is located in the village of Buxton, on Hatteras Island, in the midst of the natural beauty of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Just a few minutes' drive is the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. Cape Point, where the Labrador Current meets the Gulf Stream is a short stroll from the lighthouse. Stop by the docks in the charming fishing hamlet of Hatteras Village around 4:00 in the afternoon to see charter boats bring in the day's catch. Take a short ferry ride to Ocracoke Island, home of Blackbeard the Pirate. Walk the beaches of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Search for shells along our 70 miles of beautiful shoreline and watch dolphins frolic in the surf. Take a short ride to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Wander the beautiful trails among an amazing diversity of wildlife. Visit the numerous small galleries featuring the works of our local artists and artisans.
Leave plenty of time to do nothing at all. Sit on your private deck and look out on Canadian Hole and Kite Point, where you'll watch windsurfers and kiteboarders sail across the water. Pull up a chair on our dock and watch the mackerel jump. Sit on the front porch of a delightful coffee shop and watch the boats come and go. Plant a beach chair at the edge of the surf and do nothing. Just relaxing is "island time" well spent.
Of course, we have places we frequent when we get time to wander. While we hope you dine with us frequently during your stay, as most of our lodging guests do, we also hope that you'll experience all the flavor and diversity that Hatteras Island offers.
