ASST #115 Heroin – Down in a Hole with Donovan Pee Mahoney (picture by @BenDianna)

Donovan Pee Mahoney met me in my hotel room in Vancouver to talk about Heroin. Donovan was a heavy heroin user and lived on the streets of one of the most drug addicted blocks in North America. He was involved with the drug for decades and has only recently gotten away from it. It’s a fascinating look at the life and exactly the kind of thing I like for this podcast.

The Music

ZZ Top – Brown Sugar (I really like the graininess of the vinyl copy. It makes it feel more like Rush)

K’s Choice – Not an Addict (One of my favorite songs in college. Never really understood the lyrics until recently)

Alice in Chains – Down in a Hole (I just saw them play (with the new lead singer) in Columbus the night I recorded this intro and I couldn’t think of a more apt song to play)

Howlin’ Wolf – Spoonful (There’s a psychedelic version you should check out as well. Howlin’ Wolf did some experimenting towards the end of his life with really interesting results. Miles Davis did something similar with infusing jazz and hip-hop together.

  2. Robert says:

I’m halfway though, and this guys not talking about heroin at all! It sounds like he was more of a tweaker, but yeah he just keeps talking about other stuff. We’ll see how the second half of the podcast

  3. Jerome says:

GOD DAMN THAT’S SOME GOOD SHIT RIGHT THERE. KIND OF WISH HE WAS STILL ADDICTED TO HEROIN THOUGH JUST SO WE COULD GET IN THE MIND OF A CURRENT HEROIN JUNKIE. NIGGA THATS A GOOD PODCAST THO.

I lived in Vancouver from 1992-1995 and everything Donovan said was 100% true. Vancouver is a great place to visit but I would never want to live there again. When he talked about Hastings and Main he wasn’t joking, Cop shop on corner, Jail on the other, Court house on the other, Meth clinic on the other it was messed up. The way that Donovan talked is so bang on to the story of the Downtown East side! good job you dirty Jew good job!

This is investigative journalism at its best! Nothing but the (slightly junk addled) truth. You should do more like this Ari. Cheers mate!
