The Yomiuri Shimbun RIO DE JANEIRO — Japan finished fifth in the 4x100-meter medley relay on Saturday at the Rio Games, missing the podium for the first time in four Olympic Games.

Ryosuke Irie, Yasuhiro Koseki, Takuro Fujii and Katsumi Nakamura clocked a combined 3 minutes 31.97 seconds in the final.

The United States won the event with an Olympic record of 3:27.95. Michael Phelps swam the third butterfly leg and won his 23rd career gold in the final swimming event in Rio.

Britain finished second, followed by Australia.

Japan had medaled in this event at the previous three Olympics. It won a bronze at the 2004 Athens Games and the 2008 Beijing Games, followed by a silver four years later in London.
