GUWAHATI: Union minister of state for commerce and industry Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday charged chief minister Tarun Gogoi with spreading misinformation on the suspension of the North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP), 2007, which was initiated during the UPA rule.

Speaking at the Assam Nirman conclave, organized by the state BJP unit, Sitharaman said NEIIPP has several loopholes. She added that it was an open-ended scheme with no limit on the number of proposals to be accepted from the industries. She said limited budget was allocated for NEIIPP.

Only approximately Rs 700 crores were earmarked for NEIIPP in the 11th Five Year Plan, she said. The Union minister added that NEIPP has resulted in uneven sectoral growth with most benefits going to only a few sectors.
