Reports from Rio indicate that Kenyan bronze medallist in the 3000m steeplechase, Ezekiel Kemboi, has been disqualified and stripped of his medal after running off the track during his race.
According to an official report in the IAAF website, Kemboi’s has been denied his medal after the French team presented a complaint that he stepped outside the line at the curve after clearing his water jump in the fourth lap of the race. The IAAF found that Kemboi had indeed committed an infringement, but it is not clear if it affected his time of 8:08.47.
Kemboi had finished the race third, with Consenslus Kipruto winning gold and breaking the Olympic Record in 8:03.28. American Evan Jagger won silver.
Before he learned about his disqualification, Kemboi had announced his retirement.
The Bronze medal has now been awarded to France’s Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad, who crossed the line in 8:11.52.
