News or Interest Intern

Anime News Network's ongoing internship program is open to new interns every semester. Interns will have the opportunity to work with ANN's news team or interest team and earn valuable on-the-job journalism experience with a professional publication. No experience is required.

Each semester ANN hires two news interns: one with intermediate Japanese knowledge and one without. Intermediate level is defined as JLPT N3 or equivalent.

The application process for an interest intern is identical, so just follow the below guidelines and you will also be automatically considered for an interest internship. Feel free to specify if you have a preference for one department or the other, or if you are only interested in one department or the other.

Important Note for Interest Internships: All applicants for our interest interns must possess a Japanese reading ability of intermediate or higher. Intermediate level is defined as JLPT N3 or equivalent.

Applicants for interns should expect to spend 10 to 20 hours a week performing tasks for Anime News Network, including posting press releases, writing news articles under the guidance of Senior News Editor Egan Loo and Managing Editor Crystalyn Hodgkins (or under Interest Editor Lynzee Loveridge for interest interns), and researching information for news articles. Strict adherence to deadlines will be expected. Full details of the position will be provided to serious applicants.

These are unpaid internship positions, but they may be eligible for school credit (talk to your school). This is a work from home internship, please verify with your school to make sure this is acceptable. Preference will be given to candidates who are seeking school credit.

We are also now accepting candidates for 2-term internships (eg: Sept 1 to April 30). Please specify in your cover letter if you want to do a 2-term internship. Preference will be given to candidates applying for 2-term internships.

Important: Applications (cover letter + resume) must be received by

  • April 15, 23:59 ET for summer internships,
  • July 15 for internships starting on September 1 and
  • November 15 for internships starting in January.

Applications (cover letter + resume) must be sent to internship (at animenewsnetwork.com), and the email's subject must read "Intern Position" or it will be discarded. Nothing sent to this e-mail address will be read before the deadlines.Any questions about these positions should be posted in the forum here.

The Interest department currently has two openings for internships starting April 1, 2016. Due to the late nature of this post, we are extending the application deadline to March 22, 2016.

The news department will have two openings starting July 1, 2016. Applications must be received by April 15, 2016.

Freelance Editorial Contributor

What We're Not Looking For

Right now there are no open positions on the reviews team. This opening pertains directly to editorial; newsroom and interest openings will be listed elsewhere on this page.

How To Inquire

Send an email with your cover letter, resume and links to two relevant writing samples to the email address listed below, with the requested information. Preferred writing samples include: previously published anime editorials or reviews, previously published entertainment journalism or media criticism, relevant personal blog posts – the pieces you feel are most representative of what you can bring to the table. Academic work is accepted but in most occasions we will ask for nearly any review or editorial work before looking at dissertations or thesis papers, which historically haven't given us a great idea of the contributor's personality. While previous entertainment journalism or editorial work is obviously greatly preferred, we're open to writers from all walks and vocations - many of our current writers are teachers, engineers, business owners and more.

Your cover letter should include, along with your standard letter, one topic or a short list of topics you have editorial concepts for that you'd like to pitch. Let's say you'd like to write articles about My Hero Academia and Attack on Titan. Your cover letter should mention those topics at the end of your letter, like so:

I would like to pitch editorial features about the following shows/subjects:
My Hero Academia
Attack on Titan
Anime Music Videos
Cosplay

Do not simply list your editorial pitches; we'll email you. The editorial team will endeavor to be in contact with contributors we are seriously interested in within 5 to 7 business days of receiving your email. Unfortunately we cannot respond to every email, nor can we respond to any requests to evaluate a resume or writing samples, nor can we confirm receipt of your email unless we are already in contact with you.

Tokyo Correspondent

Anime News Network is currently seeking a Tokyo-area correspondent to cover various events and screenings in the area. We're looking for an experienced writer who is comfortable writing film reviews and conducting interviews; previous experience in either of these things is required.

Qualifications required:

  • Lives in the Tokyo area
  • Speaks Japanese at a business-fluent level (N2 or better) and can write at a professional level in English
  • Has previous experience working as a professional writer, dealing with editorial direction and deadlines
  • Comfortable writing film reviews and interviewing professionals in the industry
  • Available to cover major events in the area such as Comiket and Tokyo Anime Fair
