file

Undergraduate

Undergraduates who are considering a career as a Foreign Service Officer (FSO) are welcome to participate in our Undergraduate Internship Programme.

Interested candidates may apply for a 4-week attachment to one of the Directorates in our Singapore Headquarters (HQ), or with selected Overseas Missions (OMs). FSOs are groomed along two career paths, “Functional and Corporate” and “Political and Economic”.  Depending on your inclinations and strengths, you may wish to select placements based on your preferred career track.

Find out more about the two FSO career paths here and MFA’s organizational structure here.

Undergraduate

Outstanding Singapore citizens who are in the midst of their tertiary education (including Masters), and are considering MFA for employment may apply.  All academic disciplines are welcome.  As places are limited, priority will be given to penultimate year students.

Fresh graduates or those in their final semester of study should apply under the Graduate Internship Programme.

Candidates should have a deep interest in international and domestic affairs, possess strong analytical and conceptual abilities, excellent written and oral communication skills, a capacity for effective working relations, and good planning and organisational abilities.

Interns may expect to be exposed to the following:

  • Attending structured briefings detailing MFA’s functions and Singapore’s Foreign Policy (HQ-only)
  • Attending dialogue sessions with VIPs
  • Attending meetings, conferences and seminars on Foreign Policy issues
  • Writing assignments, research papers
  • Participating in Directorate or Mission-specific projects and events
  • Sharing through our mentorship programme

Throughout the internship, interns will be exposed to the intricacies of Foreign Policy and gain unrivalled insights on the work and life of an FSO.

The interns’ performance will contribute to their application for full-time employment under the Foreign Service scheme.

Undergraduate

Interns will receive a stipend of S$1,000 per month or pro-rated thereof. There will be no CPF contribution.

Interns assigned to an Overseas Mission (OM) should finance and ensure validity of the following for the duration of the internship:

  • Airfare
  • Accommodation (Intern may apply for a reimbursement of up to 50%, based on hostel-equivalent rates, subject to approval)
  • Visa
  • Travel Insurance

If required, MFA will provide the necessary documentation to confirm the appointment.
