         KYO^CHU^ZAN

1816 - [EHON] Kameda BOSAI, artist. KYOCHUZAN. Vertically striated covers with horizontal figures, green on creme printed paper title label. String-bound Japanese-style, fukuro toji. The collation follows example "A" at Mitchell 383-4, save for the following: 27.9 x 18.3 cm; the pages are all un-numbered; the seals are printed in red, there is a colophon on the inside of the back cover citing 6 publishers in Edo, Osaka & Kyoto and the publication date as the ninth month of Bunka 13 [1816]. Thus, another variant is added to the long list surrounding this wonderful work. Though many articles have been written and differences between variants catalogued, there is surely more that needs to be said on the subject. Besides the bibliographic niceties involved, this copy captures perfectly the artistry and fun of the "MOUNTAINS OF THE HEART", perhaps the most famous of all Nanga school ehon. A very nice printing with lovely colors on the creamy paper of the better editions. The very first image has a bit of mottling, perhaps a bit of a chemical reaction between the paper and the pigment or perhaps even a desired "effect" as I have seen it in several copies.

Sketches of India; or Observations of the Scenery, &c.; in Bengal: written in India in the Years 1811, 12, 13, 14; together with Notes on the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena, written at those Places, in Feb., March, and April, 1815.

London: Black, Parbury, and Allen, 1816 - Octavo. Original boards, rebacked to style and with green morocco label. A little rubbed, light browning, a very good copy. First edition. Determinedly anonymous account of a tour through Bengal, and of the return voyage to England via the Cape and St. Helena. A well-observed, well-written and highly informative memoir covering commerce, religion, administration, and topography, and including interesting digressions such as a description of the freelance General Martine's villa Constantia "a striking monument to folly"; the cultivation of opium; an account of a suttee; a chapter "Of Tiger, Lion, and Hog-hunting, with Shooting in General in India"; and concluding with a nicely detailed survey of the Cape, and a brief description of St. Helena. Referred to by James Mill, in his History of India, as "that interesting little book." The author was certainly not in the services, shows no sign of having been in Company employ (although he is published by the booksellers to the HEIC), and gives no indication as to the purpose of his visit to India. We can only presume that he was a well-informed, and well-connected gentleman of means. Uncommon and appealing.

         Untitled

Paris 1816 - Jacques Barraband’s (1767-1809) engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. This stunning portrait, [Untitled], measures 22.5" x 16.25" and is in excellent condition. This image was done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking Histoire Naturelle des Promerops. This bird is expertly hand-colored in rich shades of gray and black with a dark beak and crimson eye. The positioning of the bird, as if viewed from below, allows for the undersides of the wing and tail-feathers to be appreciated. Precise lines define and detail this bird, giving it definition and dimension. The collaboration of Levaillant and Barraband represented a departure from previous ornithological texts in its emphasis on beauty and luxury, with sumptuously colored and flawlessly rendered birds. Apart from their undoubted beauty, Barraband’s engravings display a scientific accuracy that few ornithological artists have matched since. The meticulous hand-colored engravings in Levaillant's publications were unmatched for the delicate modulations of tone and color, fine lines and perfect draftsmanship, making them exceptional in their richness and tonal variation. Each feather is described by dozens of parallel lines, providing remarkable detail and naturalistically textured color. Some of the prints are embellished with touches of gold leaf on the feathers of the cheeks and shoulders of the birds, emphasizing the preciousness of the plates and reproducing the iridescence of the birds’ feathers. The present selection of images represents an opportunity to acquire spectacular engraving by a foremost 19th-century natural history artist.

Le Guepier Tarva male, No. 8 (Bee Eater)

Paris 1816 - Jacques Barraband’s (1767-1809) engravings of birds are masterpieces of French ornithological illustration. This stunning portrait, Le Guepier Tarva male, No. 8, measures 21.25" x 13.75" and is in very good condition with a few faint stain marks and cropped margins. This image was done for the distinguished ornithologist Francois Levaillant, who commissioned the artist to illustrate his landmark works on exotic birds, including the lavish and striking "Histoire Naturelle des Promerops". This bird, commonly called the Bee-Eater, is expertly hand colored in rich shades of green and blue with a yellow throat and blue collar. The positioning of this bird allows for the winds and tail to be appreciated for their fine detailing and coloring. Also well detailed is the branch that the bird rests on, in a naturalistic and lively manner. The name of this birds comes from their dietary habits of eating insects, especially bees.

Memoirs of My Own Times, Volume II

Abraham Small, Philadelphia 1816 - First edition. Volume Two only. Fair in original paper covered boards with spine nearly perished, spine lable present but chipped/cracked, front and rear endpapers detached but present, both boards detached. This is second book of the vast, defensive, three volume memoir by one of the most senior and controversial officers in Continental Army/United States Army. He has been characterized by the historian Robert Leckie as a general who "had never won a battle or lost a court-martial" and this volume catalogues several of his vindications in the face of charges that he abused his power or was negligent. He both held high offices and was tarnished by his intriques: he was the most senior officer in the US Army after Washington and Hamilton and was first governor of the Louisiana Territory, yet he resigned his first commission due to corruption charges, was later proved to have been in secret negotiations with the Spanish to set up a fief of his own in Kentucky, was suspected of conspiracy with Aaron Burr to set up an independent nation in the West, and was court-martialed by James Madison, which is the concern of the first chapter of the book .       Paris 1816 - This exquisite, hand colored stipple engraving, “Iris a feuilles de gramen” measures 21.5” x 14” and is in very good condition with slightly cropped edges. This dynamic flower, is commonly called the grass-leaved iris or meadow lily. Naturalistically depicted, it is colored with long, green leaves and finely detailed flower petals in shades of blue and purple with yellow centers. This bulbous flower is also known for its pleasant fragrance. Also illustrated on this engraving are records of the anatomical features of this species including the bulb and flowers, so that the flower could be identified with precision and cultivated to perfection. In each illustration, the flowers are classical "portraits" which lack backgrounds or settings. The regal simplicity of the compositions allows the viewer to focus without distraction on the beauty and delicate complexity of the plants themselves. Les Liliacées was Redouté’s largest and most ambitious work and is generally considered his masterpiece, arguably rivaled only by Les Roses. Produced under the patronage of the Empress Josephine, for whom Redouté worked as botanical artist at her estate at Malmaison, these pristine examples represent landmark works in the field of flower illustration. The title Les Liliacées is misleading, as the work was of a much broader scope, including representatives of the lily, amaryllis, iris, orchid, and other families. The plates were executed by means of stipple engraving, a method that the artist himself perfected when he was unsatisfied with the effects garnered by traditional copper-plate engraving. As Redouté shrewdly observed, the delicacy and subtle elegance of his compositions could only be captured using a printing method equally fine. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redouté provided.
