Posting a photo to Twitter of a Hamas spokesman being interviewed on camera, Nick Casey, The Wall Street Journal‘s Middle East Correspondent, wondered how patients there might feel about Hamas using the hospital as a “de facto headquarters for Hamas leaders, who can be seen in the hallways and offices,” as reported by The Washington Post last week.
On Monday, Casey wrote: “You have to wonder [with] the shelling how patients at Shifa hospital feel as Hamas uses it as a safe place to see media.”
During the 15 days of Israel’s Operation Protective Edge, Hamas has been caught using hospitals, mosques and schools to hide militants and weapons, all of which are contrary to international rules of war created to protect civilians.

“criminal Zionist on stolen lands” Jews never stole land it was given to them by the people running the land at the time! Palestinians NEVER had control over the land they simply migrated there from Egypt, Jordan and wherever else and settled. There was never any form of Palestinians govt there either. You need to educate yourself because your sounding foolish now, read some history before you spread false claims.
Palestinians were given their land so they can declare a state & Jews were given a land so they can declare a state. Let us not forget there were Jews living in Israel at the time as well and have been throughout history. The bible mentions Jerusalem many times and is a holy place for the Jews. Jews deserve a state of their own just as Muslims have theirs. The fact that the Arab world did not accept the Jews having their won land was the problem as they started a war with Israel the day it declared itself a state! They NEVER wanted peace with the Jews, Jews were ethnically cleansed from Arab states, as many of the Jewish grandparents & parents ran away leaving all their wealth behind, with NOTHING on their backs and landed in Israel where they hoped for a better future for them & their kids.

Your post “Stop Hamas” is an excellent example as to why one should not delve beyond the United Nations partition resolutions in justifying the existence of Israel. That should be valid enough. Go back further and all your assertions have equally valid counter assertions that can be made. Israel’s validity depends first and foremost on a United Nations Resolution that came about in an attempt to resolve a long term and ongoing state of violence in territories formerly subject to the Ottoman Empire.
But just to deal with your assertions – the first one simply cannot be taken seriously – that the land was somehow voluntarily given by the people running it at the time. I’m not sure if the people referred to here are the United Nations or the Mandate Authorities – the British – who had given notice of their intention to abandon the mandate and did nothing of the sort suggested by you.
Title over individual plots of land was taken by many means including, prior to the Second World War, purchase from absentee landlords with Arab tenants, Foreign Money then, as now, was used to displace Arabs. In the events of the nineteen forties whole villages were destroyed. Much state owned land reverted to exclusive Jewish use. Arab tenants were expelled.
Moving to another point. The Palestinian relationship to the land was no different to the relationship of the vast majority of people to their “Nations”, often Monarchies, in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. They were not citizens but subjects. In Palestine they were subjects of Ottoman Rule, just as in Eastern Europe, Jews were subjects of the Tsar – there is no digffference in the two relationships. Jews already in Palestine were also Ottoman subjects. The relationship between Palestine’s inhabitants in1914 to the Turkish Authorities makes it absolutely clear that Palestine was not “Terra Nullius” under international law. The claim that is was is rubbish. You might like to look at Australia’s Mabo case on this question relating to Aboriginal relationship with the land prior to white settlement
Neither Palestinians nor “Jews” were given their land to form “States” – in fact the UN barely addressed the question of post Partition administration. Perhaps they should have. Statehood was regarded by Zionism as an inevitable progression from Partition that took the idea of a Jewish administered area and an Arab administered area a stage further.
The Palestinians -as recognised by David Ben Gurion – are almost certainly themselves descendants of people who remained in Judea after many had left in the first to eighth centuries (whether or not there was an actual historical exile). Their genetic claim – if such a claim exists – would have to be considered equal. Indeed many genetic studies point to the Jews from Europe as having a closer relationship to local European populations than to their supposed Middle East origin. In fact if genealogy is rationally, instead of religiously, approached the entire Middle Eastern European and non indigenous American population amongst others worldwide have equal claim to include within them the seed of Abraham as their genetic origin. The five millenia passed patriarchs of the Hebrews have long been “in” everyone’s DNA “past”
History records that the processes of “ethnic cleansing”, and exile, and refugee fleeing, were endemic to both the Arab and the “Jewish” communities. In the present situation I feel it hard to see the Settlement Policy in the West Bank and the continuing Occupation after nearly fifty years as expresing a genuine search for peace on the Jewish side any more than the Hamas Charter convinces me of Palestinian good intent.
Peace will not be found unless both communities get honest with their history, their genealogy and their present intents. No-one will be able to sit down at a negotiating table and achieve ongoing peace until hands have been cleansed through the exercise of a myth purging honesty.
Ultimately where we are is more important than how we got here. I speak as the spouse of a person who is not Jewish but who has numerous identified Jewish ancestors including a Rabbi. – Nothing unusual. After five hundred years any individual has over 100thousand possible direct personal lineages they can follow. Shake the tree and every group in the world will fall out – including “Jews”. In my families’ case add Dutch, French, Belgian, German, Scottish, English, Irish, Danes and no doubt the odd naughty Roman. Rattle it hard enough and you’ll get Charlemagne and Constantine.
I am genuinely sorry that Jewish people have had such a terrible recent history. So have many of us – My parents were subject to German Missile attacks and years of bombing – But the realities of History and Historiography do not change however hard the degree of suffering. Nor does the resposibility to think rationally recede.

Nothing like Adam says is the truth. The truth is the truth, and however unpleasant it is better than lies. Israel is the most ethical Nation in the world. God is the God of Israel and those who oppose him will have to face him. How can Adam condone using people as human shields and strapping bombs on to children?

Oh Adam, don’t be so backwards. The proof is here. The proof is in Hamas’ own words. The proof is in the fact that they don’t care less about any Palestinian by bringing the weapons (from both sides) into the homes, schools, cemeteries and hospitals of their own civilians. Israel will never back down as long as Hamas continues in this way, and honestly the Palestinian people should realise this too and make changes for something positive and pro life instead of become just accepting death. And yes Israelis cry for every single fallen soldier because they are a human being whose lives had so much meaning and I’m also sure for the Palestinian people their lives are mourned, too. Instead of just saying you accept death and your Lord has anything to do with a terrorist-Hamas surrendering people’s homes and families- you should accept life and create positivity… not fall into such a low black hole like siding with Hamas.

Casey refers to the issue in an earlier tweet, without photo, saying: “@RaniaKhalek it isn’t, and we all appreciate the hamas interviews. but it there’s something dangerous about them setting up at shifa.”
That tweet was replied to by GazaWritesBack, asking if Casey had taken the photograph, a question to which he did not respond.
