About the Course:

This course is designed to introduce you to key basketball concepts and knowledge. We will look at games, plays, and strategies through an analytical angle to fully understand the inner workings of the beautiful game of basketball. Students will become cultured with many analytical concepts of basketball in our attempt to expand the way one thinks about the game. Through class discussion and assignments, we hope to bring to the table your own ideas and views of basketball. We will also look into the influence of basketball on a more global level with special emphasis on culture. Students will remain up to date on all things basketball, including basketball articles and blogs. By the end of the course, we hope that students will better understand tactics and strategies and be able to critical analyze the game from a different perspective.

A large portion of this course is simply showing up. Attendance will be taken seriously and unexcused absences will hurt your participation/grade. Three or more unexcused absences will result in failing the class. Those tardy to class on a regular basis will be noted. Class will be once a week.

As the previous section mentions, attendance is a large portion of your grade. You will also be expected to participate in discussions in some way. There will be opportunities to participate aside from speaking aloud to the class. There will be times when we will discuss in pairs or in small groups. You should also always carry scrap paper or something you can write on in the event that we ask you to write down a quick response to some question or idea. Readings and articles will be provided online before the week of class. Readings are key to understanding key aspects of the class.

The grade distribution is as follows:

            60% - Attendance and Participation

            20% - Midterm Project

            20% - Final Project

How to Enroll:

Enrollment will be on a first come, first served basis. CCN's will be handed out first day of class on Feb 3.
