The Falk Dynasty continues with another SSRR Commodore's Trophy win.

CYC’s Small Sailboat Racing Regatta (SSRR) was held on Saturday, August 22, at the Mullett Lake Township Park under partly sunny skies with wind building out of the SSW at 8-10 mph. There were 19 CYC members and guests who participated in this year's sailboat races.  Awards were presented to the top three places in each fleet.  Kudos to Kate Lawson for winning the Ladies class and knocking off B.D. Gillig, the reigning ladies champ and coming in 2nd in the Commodore Trophy Race.  Bernie McInnes continues to improve and hone his sailing skills.  Matt and Chris Falk had a fun rivalry with their dad, Robert Falk who showed his sons that age, technique and experience was far more important than youth and high energy.  Congratulations to the winners and all who participated.  This year's winners are as follows:

Matt Falk

Stink Boaters
1st Place

Kate Lawson

Ladies
1st Place

Robert Falk

Seniors (65 & Up)
1st Place

Chris Falk (1) & Robert Falk (2)

Experienced Sailors
1st Place

Robert Falk

Commodore Trophy Race
1st Place

The Falks (Robert and sons Chris & Matt) cleaned up in 2015

An enthusiastic group of about 50+ CYC members and guests enjoyed a day of sailing, sunbathing, cheering, relaxing and boating followed by a yummy cookout that included brats, baked beans, salads and cookies for dessert and a keg of Cheboygan Brewery’s “Blood Orange Honey.”  Randy Lee kept the wet sailors warm with a hot fire burning most of the day.  Those members who were not in attendance missed one of CYC's best events of 2015.

Special thanks goes to SSRR Committee Co-Chair Mark and Bonnie Lorenz, their committee and many volunteers for another outstanding event.  This event requires a lot of hard work preparing the site and transporting, securing and rigging the sailboats as well as the cleanup required after the party is over.  Thanks to Bill Elliott, Don Schorfhaar and Bob Nissley for transporting and rigging the sailboats.  Also thanks to Rick Gillig and Tom and Mary O’Hare for running the sailboat races.  Tom O’Hare provided the committee boat and Jim Nihls and John DeCarli provided and operated the safety boats. There was a sailboat collison requiring the captain to be rescued by the safety boats.  Six CYC members donated their sailboats for use.  B.D. Gillig instructed the beginner sailors and Robert Falk, using common sense gestures and techniques, instructed the sailors on Racing Rules and Starting procedures.  Thanks to Tom Crook for cooking the brats and keeping the attendees happy.  Everyone shared the work and enjoyed the fun and provided the cheering block for the sailors.

CYC's Wanigan Crew makes it a "3-Peat" winning the 2015 Wanigan Raft Race

CYC was "In it to Win It" and we did again in 2015, a “3-Peat” beating arch rival Beaver Trap by 1 minute and (18) seconds.   We blew away last year’s time by 3+ minutes!!  Must have been Bill Calver’s flow analysis and the additional flotation.

Thank you Paddlers:  Steve Konicki (Captain), Tom Morrish (Helmsman), Bill Calver, Todd Hayden, Kevin Chatman and Karl Trost!!

CYC won the 1st Place trophy (a wooden paddle with “Lega Sea” First Place affixed), the $300 cash prize and return of the $50 entry fee.  Congratulations Team for a job well done!!  The weather was sunny and cool with a following wind, perfect conditions for the paddlers to win again.   The food was yummy (hamburgers with all the sides) and the Cheboygan Brewery’s “Lighthouse Amber” flowed freely.  I guess too freely:  we ran out and had to switch to canned Yuengling.  Thank you Party hosts and volunteers for a job well done, again!

Thank you Rick & B.D. Gillig, Wanigan Co-Chair.  Bill & Jan Elliott, Bob Nissley,  Al & Anna Herrmann, Bing & Mary Stroh (Pre-Race Party Hosts), Ed & Shirley Spangler (Post-Race Party Hosts), Randy Lee (Safety Boat), Dave & Cathy Calver and Tom Crook (Parade coordinator).  Thanks to all the committee members who worked hard to get CYC in a position to defend its title as “Wanigan Raft Race World Champions.”   Thanks to the design, construction and transportation crew of Bill Elliott, Bob Nissley and Randy Lee and our Captain Steve Konicki who recruited and prepared the paddlers to win again.

Special thanks to Tom Crook, Wanigan Parade Coordinator, who was instrumental in winning the “Most Spirited Award” last year. Tom came up with a great theme of “River Pirates” for this year and unfortunately, the parade was cancelled at the last minute. Tom had made a huge cannon and had rallied the potential parade participants to purchase/make pirate costumes for the event.  (It would have been fantastic!)  Also many Thanks and Kudos to hosts of the Pre-Race party, Bing and Mary Stroh, and Post-Race party, Ed and Shirley Spangler, for hosting CYC members and guests as they cheered the paddlers onto victory again.

The awards ceremony was held this year behind the horseshoe pits and immediately after the conclusion of the race.  It was very gratifying to see all the CYC red shirts supporting the Wanigan committee and paddler team.  Thanks CYC members and guests for supporting another outstanding Wanigan series of activities.
